Chapter 20: The Person Who Signed My Name
My mother looked at the document in my hands.
Her face changed.
I had seen that expression before.
When she saw the letter from my father.
When she heard Marcus's name.
When she realized the truth was catching up.
But this time was different.
This wasn't fear of exposure.
This was shock.
"Darnell...""
I stepped back.
"Did you know about this?""
She shook her head immediately.
"No.""
"Then why did you recognize it?""
"Because your father showed it to me.""
The answer surprised me.
"When?""
"The week before he died.""
The room became quiet.
Richard watched carefully.
Like he was waiting for something.
"What did he say?""
My mother swallowed.
"He said someone was using your name.""
I looked at the document.
"Who?""
"He didn't know yet.""
I looked at Richard.
"Then why are you acting like you do?""
Richard smiled.
"Because I saw the evidence.""
"What evidence?""
He walked toward the desk.
"Your father had records showing the transfers.""
"Show me.""
Richard hesitated.
Only slightly.
But enough.
I noticed.
People who have the truth don't hesitate.
People who have a story do.
"You don't have everything.""
His expression changed.
"I have enough.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You have enough to make people afraid.""
I turned to Marcus.
"That's what he did.""
Marcus nodded.
"He controlled people with pieces of information.""
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"You think you understand me?""
"No.""
I looked at him.
"But I understand fear.""
The room went silent.
Because that was the one thing everyone in my family had been controlled by.
Fear.
My mother.
Marcus.
Even my father.
Richard had used fear as a weapon.
And it worked because everyone was afraid of losing something.
Their reputation.
Their home.
Their family.
But my daughter had taught me something.
A family built on fear wasn't a family.
It was a prison.
I picked up the document again.
"Where is the original?""
Richard's face changed.
"What?""
"The original record.""
He didn't answer.
I smiled slightly.
"Exactly.""
Marcus looked at him.
"You don't have it.""
Richard became colder.
"You have no idea what you're dealing with.""
"No.""
I looked around the hidden room.
"I think I finally do.""
My mother stepped closer.
"Darnell.""
I turned.
"I need to tell you something.""
I waited.
"When your father died...""
She stopped.
"Tell me.""
She took a breath.
"I found him before the ambulance arrived.""
The room went completely silent.
My heart stopped.
"What?""
Richard looked at her sharply.
"You never told him that.""
"No.""
My mother's eyes filled.
"Because I was afraid.""
My anger disappeared for a second.
Not because I forgave her.
Because I realized how much she had carried.
"What happened?""
She looked down.
"He was conscious.""
My throat tightened.
"My father was alive?""
"Yes.""
The word broke something inside me.
"How long?""
"Only a few minutes.""
I couldn't breathe.
"Did he say anything?""
My mother closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
"What?""
She whispered:
"He told me to find Marcus.""
I looked at Marcus.
He froze.
"He said Marcus needed to know the truth.""
Marcus looked away.
A lifetime of pain hitting him all at once.
"And then?""
My mother wiped her face.
"He gave me something.""
"What?""
"A flash drive.""
I stared.
"Where is it?""
She looked toward the shelves.
"I hid it.""
Richard suddenly moved.
Too quickly.
Too desperately.
"Where?""
Everyone noticed.
His reaction.
My mother noticed.
I noticed.
Marcus noticed.
The man who had spent twenty years acting untouchable had just revealed fear.
"What was on it?""
Richard said nothing.
My mother answered.
"Everything.""
My eyes moved toward Richard.
"The company.""
She nodded.
"The fraud.""
A pause.
"The night your father died.""
Richard stepped forward.
"You don't know what you're doing.""
I looked at him.
"Actually, I do.""
I reached for my phone.
"Because I'm done letting everyone else decide what truth I can handle.""
Richard's expression changed.
For the first time, he looked worried.
Then his phone rang.
He looked down.
His face changed.
He answered.
"Yes?""
A few seconds passed.
Then his eyes moved toward me.
"No.""
The word came quietly.
Almost like a mistake.
I watched him.
"What happened?""
He ended the call.
And for the first time, Richard looked afraid.
"The flash drive.""
My mother looked confused.
"What about it?""
May you like
Richard stared at her.
"Someone found it.""
