Chapter 19: The Truth Richard Was Desperate to Hide
For a moment, nobody moved.
Richard stood at the top of the stairs like he owned the house.
Like he had always belonged there.
That was the thing about people who controlled others.
They rarely looked like villains.
They looked confident.
Calm.
Certain.
They walked into rooms expecting everyone else to adjust around them.
But this time was different.
Because Richard wasn't walking into a room full of people who believed him.
He was standing in front of three people who finally knew enough to question everything.
I held my father's journal tightly.
"You keep saying my father was hiding something.""
Richard smiled.
"He was.""
"Then tell me what.""
He looked at Marcus.
Then at my mother.
Then back at me.
"You really think you want the answer?""
My mother stepped forward.
"Richard.""
His eyes moved toward her.
A cold smile appeared.
"Still protecting him?""
My mother's face changed.
Not fear.
Anger.
"You destroyed everything.""
Richard laughed quietly.
"That's what you tell yourself?""
I watched them carefully.
Because something was happening between them.
A conversation that had started long before I entered the room.
"You both knew.""
My voice cut through the silence.
They looked at me.
"You both knew things about my father.""
I pointed toward Richard.
"You knew about Marcus.""
Then toward my mother.
"You knew about the documents.""
I looked between them.
"And somehow, I was the only person who didn't know anything.""
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
Richard slowly walked down the stairs.
Every step made the room feel smaller.
"Darnell, your father was a complicated man.""
I shook my head.
"Don't do that.""
"Do what?""
"Don't rewrite him.""
Richard stopped.
I continued.
"You spent years letting people believe he was dishonest.""
His expression hardened.
"Because he was.""
"No.""
I held up the journal.
"Because you wanted people to believe that.""
For the first time, Richard looked irritated.
A tiny crack.
But I saw it.
"You don't know what happened.""
"Then explain.""
He stared at me.
"Your father was obsessed with fixing his mistakes.""
I looked at Marcus.
"Yes.""
Richard continued.
"He wanted to bring Marcus into the family. He wanted to expose the company problems. He wanted to reveal everything.""
"That sounds like honesty.""
Richard's jaw tightened.
"It sounds like chaos.""
There it was.
The difference between us.
My father believed truth could repair things.
Richard believed truth destroyed them.
"You were afraid.""
Richard laughed.
"Afraid?""
"Yes.""
I stepped closer.
"You knew if my father exposed you, everything would collapse.""
His eyes narrowed.
"You think I did this because of money?""
I didn't answer.
Because I wasn't sure.
Richard looked around the hidden room.
"This family was already falling apart before I touched anything.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"You stole from my father.""
Richard looked at him.
"You weren't there.""
"No.""
Marcus's voice remained calm.
"But I know enough.""
Richard smiled.
"You know nothing about your father.""
Marcus froze.
And I saw it.
A wound.
A person who had spent years being told he didn't belong.
Richard noticed.
And used it.
"Your father chose Darnell.""
The words hit hard.
Marcus's expression changed.
"Don't.""
"He had a family.""
Richard looked at me.
"He had a son.""
Then back to Marcus.
"And you were always the secret.""
I stepped between them.
"Stop.""
Richard looked amused.
"Protecting your brother already?""
"Yes.""
The answer came without hesitation.
And something changed in Marcus's face.
Because maybe that was the first time someone had chosen him openly.
Richard looked away.
"Your father would have been proud.""
I frowned.
"What?""
Richard sighed.
"That was always the problem with Thomas.""
He looked at the old documents.
"He believed everyone deserved another chance.""
"Because he was better than you.""
Richard's expression darkened.
Then he reached into his coat.
My body tensed.
Marcus moved immediately.
But Richard didn't pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a folder.
He threw it onto the table.
"Read it.""
I didn't move.
"What is it?""
"The truth.""
I opened it.
Inside were copies of financial records.
Old reports.
Signatures.
Transactions.
Then I saw something.
My father's name.
My mother's name.
Richard's name.
All connected.
But one document caught my attention.
A transfer authorization.
The date was two days before my father's death.
The signature at the bottom was not my father's.
It was mine.
I froze.
"What is this?""
Richard smiled.
"That's what your father was going to reveal.""
I looked closer.
The signature looked similar.
But wrong.
"Someone forged my name.""
Richard said nothing.
My mother whispered:
"Oh no.""
I looked at her.
"You know what this is?""
She nodded slowly.
"I've seen it before.""
My anger rose.
"And you didn't tell me?""
"I thought I could handle it.""
The same words.
The same mistake.
Always trying to handle everything alone.
Richard watched us.
"Your father discovered that someone had used Darnell's identity to move money.""
I stared.
"My identity?""
Richard nodded.
"He was going to expose the person responsible.""
"Who?""
Richard looked at my mother.
Then at me.
And said:
"The person who had access to everything.""
The room went silent.
I looked at my mother.
"No.""
She looked horrified.
Not guilty.
Horrified.
Richard smiled.
"Ask her.""
I didn't know what scared me more.
May you like
That Richard accused her.
Or that he sounded like he wanted me to believe him.
