Chapter 9: The Family Secret That Changed Everything

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was remembering.

Every family dinner.

Every conversation.

Every moment my uncle Richard had stood beside me.

After my father’s death, Richard became my guide.

When I struggled with leadership, he gave advice.

When I doubted myself, he encouraged me.

He told me:

“Your father would be proud.””

Now those words felt different.

Almost cruel.

Because I didn’t know if they were true.

The next morning, I asked Daniel to arrange a meeting.

Not with executives.

With someone from the past.

A former company lawyer.

Thomas Reed.

He had worked with my father for thirty years.

If anyone knew the truth, it was him.

When Thomas arrived, he looked older than I remembered.

But his eyes were sharp.

“Ethan.””

We shook hands.

“I didn’t expect to hear from you.””

“I need answers.””

He studied my face.

“About what?””

I placed the old partnership document on the table.

His expression changed immediately.

Where did you find this?””

“My father’s files.””

Thomas sat down slowly.

“I hoped you would never see that.””

The sentence confirmed my fears.

“You knew?””

He looked away.

“Yes.””

“About Richard?””

Thomas sighed.

“Your father knew too.””

My chest tightened.

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

“Because he wanted to protect you.””

“Protect me from my own family?””

Thomas nodded.

“Your father believed Richard regretted what he did.””

“What exactly did he do?””

Thomas was silent.

Then he began.

“Years ago, before The Grand Regent became successful, your father and Alexander created a company together.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“You know the public version.””

He opened his briefcase.

Inside were old records.

“Your father discovered Alexander was secretly moving company funds.””

“And Richard?””

“He helped cover it.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Because Richard believed your father took everything from him.””

“That makes no sense.””

“Jealousy rarely does.””

Thomas explained.

Richard was older.

More experienced.

But my father was the one who created the vision.

The one investors believed in.

The one who built the future.

Richard spent years believing he deserved equal recognition.

Eventually, resentment became obsession.

“But why wait until now?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Because your father left everything to you.””

The answer was simple.

And painful.

Richard didn’t hate the company.

He hated losing control of it.

Later that afternoon, I met Richard.

I chose a quiet location.

A private room away from cameras.

He arrived exactly on time.

As always.

Perfect.

Controlled.

Calm.

“Ethan.””

He smiled.

“You look tired.””

“I found the documents.””

His smile disappeared.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“I see.””

“Were you working with Alexander?””

Richard poured himself water.

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

“What is the right question?””

“Why did your father choose you?””

I stared at him.

“What?””

He looked directly at me.

“Your father built an empire. He had many people around him.””

His voice became colder.

“But when it came time to decide who would inherit everything, he chose his inexperienced son.””

“You were his brother.””

“Yes.””

“And you think that gave you the right?””

Richard smiled sadly.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I stood.

“I don’t.””

“Because you were given everything.””

The words revealed more than he intended.

“I worked beside your father for decades.””

“So did many people.””

“But I was there when nobody else was.””

His voice became emotional.

“I sacrificed everything.””

“And you think that justifies betrayal?””

He looked away.

For a moment, I saw something.

Pain.

Real pain.

But pain didn’t excuse destruction.

“Richard.””

He looked at me.

“How many people were hurt because of this?””

He didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I left.

But before I reached the door, he spoke.

“Ethan.””

I stopped.

“You should ask yourself one question.””

“What?””

“Why did your father leave you a company full of enemies?””

I turned.

“What are you saying?””

Richard looked at me.

“Maybe he knew you would need to discover them.””

A chill went through me.

Because suddenly I remembered my father’s letter.

*Trust actions, not words.*

Maybe he wasn’t warning me about my enemies.

Maybe he was preparing me for them.

That evening, Daniel called.

His voice was urgent.

“Mr. Vance.””

“What happened?””

“We found another hidden account.””

“Connected to Richard?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Connected to Claire.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Your late wife’s name appears in the records.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Claire.

The woman I lost.

The woman who had nothing to do with the company.

Why would her name appear in secret financial files?

I looked at the photo of her on my desk.

And for the first time in years…

I wondered if there was something about Claire’s past that even I didn’t know.

May you like

Because the secrets inside my empire were no longer just about money.

They were about the people I loved most.
