Chapter 6: The Enemy Inside My Empire

The next morning, I called an emergency executive meeting.

No warning.

No preparation.

No time for anyone to create excuses.

Every major leader connected to The Grand Regent attended.

Victor Hale sat at the end of the table.

He looked different.

The confidence was gone.

But he wasn’t defeated.

Not yet.

People like Victor rarely admitted weakness.

They searched for another way to survive.

I placed the documents on the table.

Nobody spoke.

“This room,” I said, “has existed for over a year.””

The executives exchanged nervous looks.

“Inside this room were complaints hidden from corporate leadership.””

Silence.

“Employees were punished for speaking up.””

More silence.

“Guests were ignored because someone believed ratings mattered more than people.””

Victor leaned forward.

“Mr. Vance, I can explain.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He stopped.

“Today, I listen.””

I turned to Hannah.

“Tell them what you found.””

She looked nervous.

But she spoke.

She explained everything.

The hidden office.

The deleted reports.

The employee records.

The retaliation.

When she finished, the room remained quiet.

Then one executive spoke.

“This is serious.””

I looked at him.

“Serious?””

He immediately lowered his eyes.

“Yes, sir.””

“This is not a public relations issue.””

I pointed at the files.

“These are people.””

Nobody argued.

Because they knew.

Victor finally spoke.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Everyone looked at him.

He continued.

“You think removing me fixes everything?””

Interesting.

He wasn’t denying it anymore.

He was changing tactics.

“You’re right,” I said.

Victor smiled slightly.

“Exactly.””

“But I never said removing you was the solution.””

His smile disappeared.

“The problem is bigger.””

I looked around the room.

“Leadership allowed this.””

Several people looked uncomfortable.

Good.

They should.

A company doesn’t become broken overnight.

It breaks through hundreds of small choices.

A manager ignoring a complaint.

An executive accepting a fake report.

An employee staying silent because speaking feels dangerous.

All those moments add up.

I turned to Daniel.

“Effective immediately, we are launching a full independent investigation.””

He nodded.

“Yes, sir.””

“Every complaint from the past three years will be reviewed.””

“Yes.””

“Every employee evaluation connected to complaints will be examined.””

“Yes.””

Victor stood.

“You can’t do this.””

I looked at him.

“I own the company.””

He froze.

“You seem to forget that.””

For the first time, everyone in the room saw Victor without his mask.

Not a powerful executive.

Just a man who had built influence on fear.

Security arrived moments later.

Victor left without another word.

But I knew this wasn’t over.

That evening, I returned to my suite.

Lily was sitting on the floor drawing.

When she saw me, she smiled.

“Daddy!””

I picked her up.

“What are you drawing?””

She showed me the picture.

It was our family.

Me.

Her.

And Claire.

I smiled sadly.

“You remembered Mommy.””

She nodded.

“She said we should be kind.””

My chest tightened.

Claire had always believed kindness was strength.

Maybe that was why losing her changed me so much.

I had spent years building an empire.

But somewhere along the way, I forgot the reason I built it.

People.

That night, while Lily slept, I received one final message.

Unknown number.

Only one sentence.

*You found Victor. But you haven’t found the person who controls him.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*Be careful, Ethan. The biggest enemy in your company isn’t outside your hotel.*

I looked around the quiet room.

At the walls.

At the city.

At everything I had built.

Because suddenly I understood.

Victor Hale was never the mastermind.

May you like

He was just someone’s shield.

And whoever stood behind him knew exactly how to hide.
