Chapter 10: The Secret My Wife Took To Her Grave

The moment Daniel said Claire’s name, the world seemed to stop.

For two years, I had tried to rebuild my life around one painful truth.

My wife was gone.

Claire was the person who knew me before the money, before the company, before the responsibility.

She knew Ethan the man.

Not Ethan Vance, the businessman whose name appeared in magazines.

Not Ethan Vance, the owner of a growing hotel empire.

Just me.

The man who burned pancakes when he tried to cook breakfast.

The man who forgot anniversaries until Claire reminded him.

The man who believed love was something simple.

And now someone was telling me her name was connected to the darkest secret my company had ever hidden.

“No,” I whispered.

Daniel remained silent.

He knew better than to interrupt.

“Explain.””

“We traced a private account connected to the hidden financial network.””

“And Claire’s name appeared.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“I don’t know yet.””

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I imagined Claire sitting across from me.

Her gentle smile.

Her calm voice.

She would have told me not to jump to conclusions.

She always believed there was another side to every story.

But she wasn’t here.

And I had to find the truth alone.

“Send me everything.””

“I already did.””

I looked at the documents on my screen.

There it was.

A transaction.

A company account.

A name.

Claire Vance.

But something felt wrong.

Claire never involved herself in my business.

She hated corporate politics.

Whenever I brought work home, she would smile and say:

“Your hotel guests can wait. Your daughter cannot.””

She was the reason I learned balance.

The reason I stopped measuring my life only by success.

So why would she appear in secret records?

I spent the next several hours investigating every detail.

The account wasn’t opened after Claire’s death.

It existed before.

Two years before.

That changed everything.

If Claire had been secretly involved, it wasn’t because of something that happened after she was gone.

It happened while we were still married.

While she was alive.

My mind raced through memories.

Late nights.

Phone calls she took in another room.

The moments when she seemed worried but refused to explain why.

At the time, I thought it was stress.

Maybe motherhood.

Maybe fear after my father’s death.

Now I wondered.

Had she been hiding something from me?

That evening, I went home earlier than usual.

Lily was sitting at the kitchen table drawing.

She looked up immediately.

“Daddy!””

I forced a smile.

“Hey, princess.””

She ran toward me.

I lifted her into my arms.

Children always knew when something was wrong.

Even when adults tried to hide it.

“You look sad.””

I froze.

“I’m okay.””

She touched my face.

“You miss Mommy?””

The question almost broke me.

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“Me too.””

I sat with her.

For a while, we said nothing.

Then she looked at her stuffed rabbit.

“Mommy said secrets are heavy.””

I looked at her.

“What did you say?””

She hugged Mr. Buttons.

“She said if you keep a secret too long, it gets heavier and heavier until you can’t carry it anymore.””

My heart tightened.

“Lily…”

“Mommy had a secret?””

Her innocent question felt like a knife.

I didn’t know how to answer.

“I don’t know.””

And that was the truth.

For the first time since Claire died, I realized something terrifying.

I knew how much I loved my wife.

But I didn’t know everything about her.

The next morning, I contacted Claire’s closest friend.

Emma Carter.

She had been Claire’s best friend since college.

If anyone knew something, it would be her.

She arrived at my office looking concerned.

“Ethan, what happened?””

I placed the document in front of her.

The moment she saw Claire’s name, her face changed.

“You found it.””

Those three words shocked me.

“You knew?””

Emma looked down.

“I knew something.””

My voice became colder.

“Something?””

She sighed.

“Claire made me promise not to tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because she thought you would try to fix everything.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Emma looked at the document.

“Claire discovered something about your company.””

“What?””

“Money was disappearing.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Before Victor?””

“Yes.””

“How long did she know?””

“Almost a year before she died.””

The room became silent.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Emma’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of me?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Of what would happen if you confronted the wrong person.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Emma hesitated.

Then said:

“Your uncle.””

I stood immediately.

“No.””

Emma looked at me.

“I know you don’t want to believe it.””

“Richard loved Claire.””

“Yes.””

“Richard helped us after she died.””

“Yes.””

“Richard was family.””

Emma’s expression softened.

“Sometimes family hurts the deepest.””

I turned away.

The same words everyone kept saying.

But my heart refused to accept them.

“Did Claire have proof?””

Emma nodded.

“She did.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“She said she had hidden it somewhere safe.””

I looked at her.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Emma whispered:

“Because she was trying to protect you.””

The same answer again.

Everyone had protected me.

My father.

Claire.

Emma.

Everyone except the people who had destroyed everything.

That night, I returned to the family estate.

I searched through Claire’s belongings.

Not because I wanted to invade her privacy.

Because I needed answers.

I looked through old boxes.

Photos.

Letters.

Memories.

Then I found something.

A small notebook.

Hidden beneath a stack of old books.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Claire’s handwriting.

The first page contained only one sentence.

*If Ethan finds this, it means I was right.*

I stopped breathing.

The next pages were notes.

Dates.

Names.

Financial records.

Claire had been investigating.

Not casually.

Carefully.

She had tracked money transfers.

She had connected names.

She had found the same pattern I had discovered.

Victor.

Margaret.

Richard.

But then I reached the final page.

A sentence written much darker than the others.

*The person who betrayed Ethan is not the person everyone suspects.*

Below it was a name.

A name I never expected.

A name that made my entire body go cold.

Because it wasn’t Richard.

It wasn’t Margaret.

It wasn’t Victor.

It was someone who had stood beside me through every tragedy.

Someone who had comforted me after Claire’s death.

Someone who had helped raise Lily.

The name was:

Daniel Parker.
