Chapter 11: The Friend Who Was Never A Friend

I stared at the notebook for nearly an hour.

The name refused to make sense.

Daniel.

My general manager.

My most trusted executive.

The person who answered my calls before anyone else.

The person who looked shocked when I revealed myself at the hotel.

The person who helped me uncover everything.

Could he really be involved?

My first instinct was denial.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

A false accusation.

But Claire had written it.

And Claire was not careless.

She was the most observant person I had ever known.

She noticed things people ignored.

A fake smile.

A nervous gesture.

A lie hidden inside a sentence.

If she suspected Daniel, there had to be a reason.

I returned to the hotel before sunrise.

Daniel was already there.

That bothered me.

Because he always seemed to be there.

Always available.

Always ready.

“Mr. Vance.””

His expression was normal.

Too normal.

“We need to talk.””

He looked at me.

“About what?””

I placed Claire’s notebook on the desk.

His face changed instantly.

Not dramatically.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

Recognition.

Fear.

“Where did you get that?””

The question was not:

“What is that?””

It was:

“Where did you get that?””

I felt something inside me sink.

“You know this notebook?””

Daniel looked away.

“I…”

“No.””

My voice became firm.

“Don’t lie.””

He sat down.

For the first time, Daniel Parker looked tired.

Not like a guilty man.

Like someone carrying a burden.

“Claire found out.””

“Found out what?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

He closed his eyes.

“Your father’s company had problems before you inherited it.””

“I know.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You don’t.””

He looked at me.

“Your father knew someone was stealing from him.””

I said nothing.

“Claire found evidence.””

“Against you?””

His face tightened.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

Daniel looked down.

“I tried to stop it.””

The answer confused me.

“You tried?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Claire suspect you?””

His silence was painful.

Finally, he said:

“Because I let her believe I was guilty.””

I stared.

“What?””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Someone threatened her.””

The room became still.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because it’s the truth.””

I studied him.

“Tell me everything.””

Daniel finally confessed.

Years earlier, he discovered financial irregularities.

At first, he believed it was simple corruption.

One employee.

One mistake.

But every time he investigated, information disappeared.

People warned him to stop.

Then Claire started asking questions.

“She was smarter than everyone,” Daniel said quietly.

“She noticed things I missed.””

“What happened?””

“She found the hidden accounts.””

“And?””

“She confronted me.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because she thought I was involved.””

That made sense.

From Claire’s perspective, Daniel had access.

Authority.

Opportunity.

But Daniel claimed he was innocent.

“I didn’t tell her the truth because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“That whoever was behind it would hurt her.””

My expression hardened.

“You should have trusted me.””

“I know.””

The words were quiet.

Honest.

“I failed you.””

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“You’re asking the wrong questions.””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

“You think Daniel is your enemy.””

My eyes moved toward him.

The voice continued:

“He isn’t.””

“Then who is?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who made you trust him.””

The call ended.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked equally confused.

Someone else was watching.

Someone else was controlling the game.

Later that day, Daniel showed me something.

A hidden file.

Something he had kept for years.

“I should have shown you earlier.””

Inside were recordings.

Audio files.

Messages.

Evidence.

The first recording was my father’s voice.

I froze.

My father had been dead for twelve years.

But there he was.

Speaking.

“If anything happens to me, Ethan must never know the full truth until he is ready.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What is this?””

He shook his head.

“I found it after your father died.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was instructed not to.””

“By who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father.””

The recording continued.

The person closest to me has already betrayed me once.

A pause.

But I believe there is still someone loyal enough to protect Ethan.

My heart raced.

Another voice appeared.

A woman’s voice.

Claire.

She was speaking to my father.

The date was months before she died.

“You’re right,” Claire said.

“We need to protect him.””

My hands trembled.

My wife and my father had both known.

They had both been hiding something.

But why?

The recording ended.

Daniel looked at me.

“Ethan.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Claire wasn’t investigating your company when she died.””

My blood ran cold.

“What are you saying?””

“She was investigating a person.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the recording.

May you like

Then at me.

“She believed someone wanted her silenced.””
