Chapter 7: The Man Who Returned From the Dead
Daniel Hayes had always believed there were only two kinds of people in the world.
People who broke things.
And people who fixed them.
It was a simple way of looking at life.
A machine failed because someone ignored maintenance.
A house lost power because someone made a mistake.
A relationship ended because someone stopped trying.
There was always a reason.
Always a cause.
But Renee Sterling had introduced him to something much harder to understand.
A person could be both the victim and the person responsible.
A person could love someone and still hurt them.
A person could believe they were doing the right thing while creating their own disaster.
And now, after everything, Daniel was forced to consider the impossible.
Maybe Renee was not just being hunted.
Maybe she was part of the reason the hunt began.
He looked at her standing in his apartment.
The woman who had called him at 2:07 in the morning.
The woman who had offered him twelve million dollars.
The woman who had looked terrified when Marcus said she was not innocent.
“Start from the beginning,” Daniel said.
Renee looked confused.
“What?””
“If Marcus believes you did something, I want to know what.””
Her expression changed.
Pain.
Fear.
Shame.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Daniel—”
“No more.””
His voice was quiet, but firm.
“No more protecting me by keeping me in the dark.””
Renee looked away.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“I know.””
He softened slightly.
“But it isn’t working.””
The room became silent.
Finally, Renee sat down.
“I made mistakes.””
Daniel remained standing.
“What kind of mistakes?””
She stared at the floor.
“The kind that changed everything.””
Three hours later, Daniel and Renee were sitting in a private conference room inside Sterling Global.
No assistants.
No executives.
No security.
Only the two of them.
Renee had requested the room because she wanted privacy.
Daniel suspected she also wanted distance from the world she built.
“Before my father died,” Renee began, “Sterling Global was going through a difficult period.””
Daniel listened.
“The company was expanding too quickly. We were buying smaller technology firms, entering new markets, taking risks.””
“That sounds normal for a company that size.””
“It was.””
She paused.
“Until I found something.””
“What?””
“Financial irregularities.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Someone was stealing?””
“Not exactly.””
“What then?””
“Money was being moved through complicated transactions. Legal on paper. But suspicious.””
Daniel nodded.
“Your father knew?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“He told me to investigate quietly.””
“Why quietly?””
“Because he suspected someone inside the company.””
Daniel remembered the names.
The board.
The executives.
The people closest to Arthur Sterling.
“What did you find?””
Renee looked uncomfortable.
“I found a group of employees who were manipulating contracts.””
“Were they stealing from the company?””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
“Hundreds of millions.””
Daniel went silent.
“Hundreds of millions?””
“Yes.””
“And what did you do?””
Renee looked at him.
“I confronted them.””
Daniel immediately understood.
“You went alone.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought I could handle it.””
She gave a small, bitter smile.
“My father always told me I was too much like him.””
“What did he mean?””
“That I believed intelligence could solve everything.””
Daniel said nothing.
Because he understood that mistake.
Smart people often believed they could outthink danger.
Until danger stopped playing by the rules.
“What happened after you confronted them?””
Renee looked at the window.
“Three days later, my father died.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“And you think it’s connected.””
“I did.””
“Past tense?””
She hesitated.
“I don’t know anymore.””
That evening, they met Marcus.
The location was an old waterfront warehouse outside Boston.
Daniel hated the place immediately.
Too isolated.
Too many exits.
Too many places someone could hide.
Renee noticed.
“You don’t like this.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because nobody chooses a place like this for a friendly conversation.””
She almost smiled.
“Your electrician instincts?””
“My survival instincts.””
A black car appeared near the building.
Renee froze.
Daniel immediately stepped in front of her.
The car stopped.
The door opened.
A man stepped out.
Marcus Vale.
Daniel understood immediately why Renee had loved him.
He was the opposite of Daniel.
Tall.
Elegant.
Confident.
The kind of man who belonged at expensive restaurants and business meetings.
But there was something different now.
He looked exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like someone who had spent months running from something.
Renee stared at him.
“Marcus.””
His eyes moved to her.
For a second, neither spoke.
Then he whispered:
“You look different.””
Renee’s face hardened.
“You disappeared.””
“I know.””
“You left me.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe you abandoned me.””
Marcus looked away.
“I had to.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You must be Daniel.””
Daniel’s expression remained cold.
“You know who I am.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Marcus gave a sad smile.
“Because everyone knows who you are now.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked at Renee.
“You didn’t tell him.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Tell me what?””
Renee said nothing.
Marcus laughed quietly.
“Of course.””
He looked back at Daniel.
“She never tells anyone the whole truth.””
Daniel felt anger rising.
“Start talking.””
Marcus reached into his coat.
Renee immediately tensed.
Daniel prepared himself.
But Marcus only pulled out a small device.
A flash drive.
“This is what everyone has been searching for.””
Renee stared.
“My father’s files.””
Marcus nodded.
“You know what’s on this?””
“No.””
“Then you don’t understand what happened.””
Daniel watched Marcus carefully.
“Explain.””
Marcus looked at Renee.
“Your father discovered that the people stealing from Sterling Global weren’t just employees.””
He paused.
“They were connected to the board.””
Renee nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You don’t.””
He stepped closer.
“They weren’t stealing money.””
Renee frowned.
“Then what?””
“They were building a second company.””
Silence.
Daniel looked confused.
“A second company?””
Marcus nodded.
“A company that would compete directly with Sterling Global.””
“How?””
“Using Sterling technology.””
Renee’s face changed.
“They stole our research.””
“Yes.””
“And my father found out.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t he expose them?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Because he discovered something worse.””
“What?””
Marcus’s eyes became serious.
“They weren’t acting alone.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“Who else?””
Marcus looked at Renee.
“You.””
The accusation hung in the air.
Renee stepped back.
“No.””
Marcus looked heartbroken.
“I wish I was wrong.””
Daniel watched her reaction.
Not anger.
Not guilt.
Shock.
Real shock.
“Explain,” Daniel said.
Marcus looked at him.
“Renee was involved in the investigation.””
“I know.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“She was involved with the people being investigated.””
The world seemed to stop.
Daniel looked at Renee.
“What is he talking about?””
Renee’s face went pale.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus pulled out another document.
“Three years ago, before Arthur Sterling died, Renee approved a technology transfer agreement.””
Daniel looked at the paper.
The signature.
Renee Sterling.
She stared at it.
“That’s impossible.””
“You signed it.””
“I never approved that.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Then someone forged your signature.””
Daniel looked between them.
“Which means?””
Marcus answered:
“Someone wanted it to look like Renee was part of the theft.””
Renee slowly understood.
“Someone framed me.””
“Yes.””
Daniel exhaled.
“So you’re saying she didn’t betray her father.””
Marcus looked at him.
“I’m saying that’s what I believed.””
“Believed?””
Marcus looked down.
“Because then I found something else.””
He handed Daniel another document.
Daniel read it.
His expression changed.
“What is this?””
Renee took it.
Her hands began shaking.
A transfer record.
A payment.
From Sterling Global.
To Marcus Vale.
Date:
The day after Renee’s diagnosis.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“You were paid.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“By who?””
Marcus looked at Renee.
“I don’t know.””
Renee stared at him.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“Yes.””
“After you left?””
“Yes.””
“After you took money?””
Marcus’s eyes filled with regret.
“I didn’t take it willingly.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked at the flash drive.
“It means I was forced.””
“By who?””
Marcus looked toward the dark warehouse windows.
Then his voice dropped.
“The same person who has been watching Renee.””
A sound echoed.
A car door closing outside.
Everyone froze.
Daniel turned.
“How many people know we’re here?””
Marcus answered immediately.
“Only us.””
Renee’s face changed.
“Then someone followed us.””
Marcus grabbed the flash drive.
“We need to leave.””
But before they could move, the warehouse lights shut off.
Complete darkness.
Daniel heard movement.
Fast.
Multiple footsteps.
Someone whispered:
“Don’t let them leave.””
Renee grabbed Daniel’s arm.
“Daniel.””
He could hear fear in her voice.
Not the controlled fear of a CEO.
The real kind.
The kind from the hospital room.
The kind that had started everything.
Daniel pulled out his phone.
No signal.
The footsteps came closer.
Marcus whispered:
“There’s a door in the back.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You knew this place had another exit?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Yes.””
Daniel noticed.
But there was no time.
A flashlight appeared.
A man stepped into the darkness.
And Daniel recognized him.
Victor Cross.
Renee’s father’s former head of security.
The man who warned him.
The man who knew everything.
Victor looked at Renee.
Then at Daniel.
Then smiled.
“You really should have listened.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Why?””
Victor’s expression remained calm.
“Because the truth you’re looking for…”
He looked at Renee.
“…is the truth she buried.””
Renee stared at him.
“What did I bury?””
Victor said nothing.
Instead, he looked at Marcus.
“Tell him.””
Marcus went pale.
Daniel turned.
“Tell me what?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“The night Arthur Sterling died…”
A pause.
“Renee was there.””
Daniel looked at Renee.
She looked terrified.
Because she knew what came next.
May you like
Marcus continued:
“And she wasn’t alone.””
