Chapter 5: The Billionaire’s Fake Boyfriend Enters the War

Daniel Hayes signed the contract at 9:43 p.m.

The moment the pen touched the paper, his life split into two completely different versions.

The old Daniel was a father.

An electrician.

A man who woke up early, packed lunches, repaired broken things, and measured success by whether he could give his daughter a safe home.

The new Daniel was something else.

A man standing in the middle of a corporate war he did not understand.

A man pretending to love one of the most powerful women in America.

A man whose name was already being used by people who wanted Renee Sterling destroyed.

He stared at his signature.

For a moment, he wondered if he had just made the biggest mistake of his life.

Then he looked at Renee.

She was reading the contract carefully.

Not celebrating.

Not smiling.

Almost looking guilty.

“You can still change your mind,” she said.

Daniel looked up.

“You’re the one who offered me twelve million dollars.””

“Yes.””

“You’re the one who dragged me into this.””

“Yes.””

“And now you’re telling me I can leave?””

Renee nodded.

“If I thought leaving would keep you safe.””

Daniel studied her.

“You really believe that?””

“I know what these people are capable of.””

“Then why are you still here?””

The question caught her off guard.

“What?””

“You know someone is trying to destroy you. Maybe worse.””

Daniel pointed toward the city outside the window.

“You could walk away. Sell your company. Move somewhere nobody knows you.””

Renee looked toward the skyline.

“My father built Sterling Global from nothing.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She was quiet.

Finally, she said:

“Because if I leave, they win.””

Daniel expected a business answer.

He expected something about stock prices or reputation.

But her voice carried something deeper.

“They don’t just want my position.””

She looked at him.

“They want everything my father built to become something he would have hated.””

Daniel understood.

This was not about money.

It was about legacy.

And that was something he respected.

“My first rule still stands,” Daniel said.

“No secrets.””

Renee nodded.

“No secrets.””

The next morning, Daniel entered Sterling Global as Renee Sterling’s partner.

The announcement had not been public yet.

But the company knew.

Everyone knew.

That was how places like this worked.

Information moved faster than electricity.

Daniel understood electricity.

This was different.

The moment he stepped onto the executive floor beside Renee, conversations stopped.

Employees looked up from their desks.

Some tried to hide their curiosity.

Others did not bother.

A few people stared openly.

Daniel wore a simple dark jacket.

No designer clothes.

No expensive watch.

No polished executive appearance.

He looked exactly like what he was.

A working-class man who had accidentally walked into a billionaire’s world.

Renee noticed the attention.

“You okay?””

Daniel glanced around.

“I’ve repaired power systems in buildings with less tension than this.””

A small smile appeared on her face.

“That’s actually comforting.””

“Why?””

“Because you’re not intimidated.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I’m terrified.””

That made her laugh.

A real laugh.

The first one he had heard from her.

“You hide it well.””

“I’m an electrician.””

“And?””

“We learn not to panic when something sparks.””

Renee smiled.

For a second, they looked like a normal couple.

And that was exactly what everyone watching needed to see.

Because that was the purpose.

A performance.

A carefully designed illusion.

But Daniel noticed something.

Renee’s hand was shaking slightly.

Only a little.

Most people would never see it.

Daniel did.

“You’re nervous.””

She immediately pulled her hand back.

“No.””

“You are.””

“I’m fine.””

“Renee.””

She stopped.

He lowered his voice.

“You don’t have to pretend with me.””

For a moment, the powerful CEO disappeared.

“I hate this.””

Daniel looked at her.

“The company?””

“No.””

She glanced around.

“Being watched.””

He understood.

“Everyone thinks they know you.””

“Yes.””

“But they don’t.””

Renee looked at him.

“No.””

They reached her office.

Before entering, she whispered:

“Today is the first board meeting since the article was published.””

Daniel nodded.

“And they’re going to attack.””

“Yes.””

“What do I do?””

“Stay beside me.””

“That’s it?””

“For now.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I’m supposed to convince billionaires that I belong here.””

Renee opened the door.

“No.””

She smiled slightly.

“You’re supposed to remind them I’m not alone.””

The boardroom was exactly what Daniel expected.

Cold.

Elegant.

Controlled.

Ten people sat around the table.

Men and women who had spent decades making decisions involving billions of dollars.

At the center sat Thomas Whitmore.

The chairman.

The man Renee suspected.

He looked like the kind of person who had mastered the art of appearing friendly while calculating every advantage.

He stood when Renee entered.

“Renee.””

His smile was perfect.

“Good to see you looking stronger.””

Daniel immediately disliked him.

Not because of anything obvious.

Because of what he noticed.

The smile reached his mouth.

Not his eyes.

“Thomas,” Renee said.

She took her seat.

Daniel sat beside her.

The room became quiet.

Whitmore looked at Daniel.

“And you are?””

Renee answered calmly.

“Daniel Hayes.””

Whitmore nodded.

“Your friend?””

Renee placed her hand lightly on Daniel’s.

“My partner.””

A few people exchanged looks.

Exactly what Renee wanted.

A message.

She was not alone.

Whitmore smiled.

“I see.””

But his expression changed for only a second.

A tiny reaction.

Surprise.

Then it disappeared.

Daniel noticed.

“You weren’t expecting me,” Daniel said.

The room went still.

Whitmore looked at him.

“Excuse me?””

“You knew Renee was bringing someone.””

Daniel leaned back.

“But you didn’t know it would be me.””

Renee glanced at him.

That was not part of the plan.

Whitmore smiled.

“You’re observant.””

“I fix problems.””

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

Whitmore looked amused.

“What kind?””

“Mostly electrical.””

A few people smiled.

Whitmore laughed softly.

“And what brings an electrician into a board meeting?””

Daniel looked at Renee.

Then back at him.

“The same thing that brings everyone else here.””

“What’s that?””

“Making sure she’s not standing alone.””

The room became silent.

For the first time, Whitmore’s smile disappeared.

Only briefly.

But Daniel saw it.

The meeting lasted two hours.

And Daniel learned something.

Corporate battles were not fought with weapons.

They were fought with words.

Every sentence had a hidden meaning.

Every question was a trap.

Every compliment carried a knife.

The board members discussed Renee’s health.

Her treatment.

Her ability to continue leading.

They never directly said she was incapable.

They carefully avoided that.

Instead, they used softer words.

Concern.

Responsibility.

Stability.

Transition.

Daniel recognized the strategy.

They were wrapping an attack in kindness.

Finally, Whitmore placed a document on the table.

“Renee, nobody wants to remove you.””

She looked at him.

“Really?””

“Of course not.””

“Then what is this?””

“A temporary leadership agreement.””

Daniel read the first page.

Temporary transfer of executive authority.

He looked at Renee.

They were trying to take control.

Whitmore continued.

“This is only until your health improves.””

Renee smiled.

“You mean until I’m gone.””

“Renee—”

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“I know exactly what this is.””

The room changed.

Daniel watched her.

This was the woman her father raised.

The woman who built an empire.

The illness had weakened her body.

Not her mind.

“You’re afraid I’ll recover,” she said.

Nobody answered.

That silence was louder than anything.

Then Whitmore spoke.

“You’re emotional.””

Daniel immediately noticed.

The tactic.

Attack her credibility.

Make her seem unstable.

Renee started to respond.

Daniel touched her hand.

A small reminder.

Stay calm.

She looked at him.

Then smiled.

“I’m emotional because people I trusted are trying to steal my company while I’m sick.””

Nobody moved.

Whitmore’s face tightened.

Then his eyes shifted toward Daniel.

“And you.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Me?””

“You seem very invested.””

“I am.””

“Why?””

Daniel answered honestly.

“Because someone threatened my daughter.””

The room changed instantly.

Renee looked at him.

The board members looked confused.

Whitmore looked interested.

“Threatened?””

Daniel realized his mistake.

But it was too late.

Whitmore leaned forward.

“Perhaps you should explain.””

Renee immediately interrupted.

“That’s irrelevant.””

“No.””

Whitmore smiled.

“I think it’s very relevant.””

Daniel watched him carefully.

The man was enjoying this.

Because he had learned something.

A weakness.

And he was about to use it.

“Mr. Hayes,” Whitmore said.

“Yes?””

“How long have you known Renee?””

Daniel answered.

“Less than a week.””

Several board members reacted.

Whitmore nodded slowly.

“Less than a week.””

He looked around the table.

“A man who barely knows our CEO suddenly appears beside her.””

Daniel stayed silent.

“He claims his daughter was threatened.””

Whitmore leaned back.

“And we are expected to believe this is coincidence?””

Renee stood.

“Enough.””

But Daniel stopped her.

“No.””

She looked at him.

He understood.

Running away would make them right.

He looked at Whitmore.

“You want to know why I’m here?””

Whitmore smiled.

“Yes.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Because when Renee called me, she wasn’t a billionaire.””

The room became quiet.

“She was a person.””

Nobody spoke.

“She was scared.””

Daniel continued.

“And I came because someone should have.””

Whitmore watched him.

For the first time, Daniel saw something.

Not anger.

Concern.

Because Whitmore realized something.

Daniel was not acting.

He genuinely cared.

And that made him dangerous.

After the meeting ended, Renee followed Daniel into the hallway.

“You surprised me.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Was that good or bad?””

“Both.””

He smiled slightly.

“I’ll take that.””

She stopped walking.

“Daniel.””

He turned.

“Thank you.””

He shrugged.

“I told you. I don’t like seeing people alone.””

Renee looked at him.

Then her expression changed.

“Wait.””

“What?””

She looked toward the elevator.

A man was standing there.

Watching them.

Daniel recognized him immediately.

The same man from the car.

The same man who warned him.

The elevator doors opened.

Before leaving, the man looked directly at Daniel.

Then he said one sentence.

Quiet enough that only Daniel could hear.

“You still don’t know what she did.””

The doors closed.

Daniel stared at the empty elevator.

Renee walked beside him.

“Who was that?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because the question had changed.

Before, he wondered what secret Renee was hiding.

Now he wondered something worse.

May you like

What had Renee done?

And how much of his life had she already changed before he ever answered her call?
