Chapter 4: The Enemy Who Knew His Name
Daniel Hayes had spent most of his life avoiding trouble.
Not because he was afraid.
Because he understood something many people never learned.
Trouble rarely arrived looking dangerous.
It arrived quietly.
A missed payment.
A strange noise in a machine.
A customer who suddenly stopped answering calls.
A person who smiled too much while hiding their real intentions.
The biggest problems in life usually started as something small.
A tiny crack.
A single loose wire.
One mistake nobody noticed until everything collapsed.
And now, somehow, Daniel Hayes had become that tiny crack in the middle of a billion-dollar war.
His name was on a document he had never seen.
His reputation was being used by people he had never met.
And the woman who brought him into this world had not told him everything.
Daniel stared at Renee.
The silence between them felt heavier than any accusation.
“Say something,” he finally said.
Renee looked at him.
“I’m trying.””
“That’s the problem.””
His voice was calm, but his disappointment was obvious.
“You always have an answer. You always have a plan. You always know what happens next.””
He pointed at the tablet.
“But suddenly my name appears in a fake statement, and you have nothing to say.””
Renee looked away.
Because she knew he was right.
For the first time since Daniel had met her, she looked powerless.
Not like a CEO.
Not like an heiress.
Just like someone who had run out of places to hide.
“I should have told you,” she whispered.
Daniel waited.
“Told me what?””
Renee took a deep breath.
“The night you came to the hospital…”
She stopped.
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Keep going.””
“I wasn’t only calling Marcus because I was afraid.””
“Then why?””
Renee walked back toward her desk.
She opened a drawer and removed a small black device.
A phone.
Not her regular phone.
An old one.
Damaged.
Cracked.
Daniel frowned.
“What is that?””
“My father’s emergency phone.””
She placed it on the desk.
“He gave it to me six months before he died.””
Daniel looked at the device.
“And?””
“And he told me something strange.””
Renee’s voice lowered.
“He said if anything happened to him, I should never trust anyone inside Sterling Global.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“Not even the board?””
“Especially the board.””
She unlocked the phone.
Inside were only a few files.
Photos.
Encrypted messages.
Documents.
Daniel looked at her.
“You had this the entire time?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Renee hesitated.
“Because I didn’t know if you were part of it.””
The answer hit harder than Daniel expected.
He stepped back.
“So you hired me, brought me into your company, put me in danger…”
His eyes narrowed.
“Because you suspected I might be connected to the people trying to destroy you?””
“No.””
Renee immediately shook her head.
“That’s not what I meant.””
“Then explain.””
She looked exhausted.
“When I called Marcus that night, I wasn’t only asking him to come because I was scared.””
Daniel waited.
“I was calling him because I needed to know if he still had my father’s phone.””
The room became quiet.
“What?””
“Marcus knew about it.””
“Why would Marcus have your father’s phone?””
“Because before he left me, he was helping me investigate.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You said he abandoned you.””
“He did.””
“Then why was he investigating with you?””
Renee looked at the floor.
“Because Marcus believed someone inside Sterling Global was responsible for my father’s death.””
Daniel froze.
“Your father died naturally.””
“That’s what everyone believes.””
“You don’t?””
Renee shook her head.
“My father was sixty-one. He exercised every day. He had no major health problems.””
She looked at the phone.
“Three days before he died, he told me he had discovered something.””
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
Daniel stared.
“You don’t know?””
“He never told me.””
“Then how do you know something happened?””
“Because the next morning, he changed his entire security system.””
Renee continued.
“He canceled meetings. He stopped answering calls. He told his assistant that there were people close to him he could no longer trust.””
Daniel absorbed everything.
This was no longer just a corporate battle.
This was something much bigger.
“What happened to the phone?””
Renee looked at him.
“Marcus had it.””
“And?””
“He disappeared.””
Daniel looked at the cracked device.
“So the night you called him…”
“Yes.””
“You wanted him to bring it.””
“Yes.””
“But he didn’t.””
“No.””
Daniel walked toward the window.
Outside, Boston moved normally.
Cars.
People.
Buildings.
Nobody knew that inside one of the most powerful companies in the country, something hidden was threatening to destroy everything.
“Why didn’t you tell the police?””
Renee gave a tired laugh.
“Which police?””
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
“My father’s security team reported his concerns before his death.””
“And?””
“They were dismissed.””
“By who?””
Renee didn’t answer.
Daniel already knew.
Someone powerful.
Someone connected.
Someone who could make problems disappear.
He turned back.
“And now someone is using my name.””
“Yes.””
“Because they know I’m close to you.””
“Yes.””
“Which means they know about your plan.””
Renee went silent.
Daniel noticed.
“What?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“There’s something else.””
His jaw tightened.
“What now?””
Renee walked toward him.
“The relationship idea wasn’t my first plan.””
Daniel waited.
“What was?””
“I wanted you to leave.””
That surprised him.
“Excuse me?””
“When I realized you were dragged into this, I wanted to pay you and send you away.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
“Because someone attacked your reputation before I could.””
Daniel stared.
“So what?””
“So now you’re already involved.””
Renee’s voice became quiet.
“They know your name. They know you met me. They know you matter.””
Daniel felt anger rising.
“You don’t get to decide that for me.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
His voice became sharper.
“You live in a world where people are pieces on a chessboard.””
Renee looked hurt.
“I don’t see you that way.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me the truth?””
She had no answer.
And that was the worst part.
Two hours later, Daniel walked out of Sterling Global.
He ignored the driver waiting outside.
He needed air.
He needed distance.
He needed to remember who he was before all of this.
Because suddenly, he felt like he was disappearing.
Not physically.
Something worse.
He was becoming someone else’s story.
A billionaire’s fake boyfriend.
A witness.
A target.
A tool.
His phone rang.
He expected Renee.
Instead, it was Lily’s school.
His stomach tightened.
“Hello?””
“Mr. Hayes? This is the front office.””
Daniel immediately became alert.
“Is Lily okay?””
“Yes, she’s fine.””
He relaxed slightly.
“Then what happened?””
“There was a man here asking questions.””
The air seemed to disappear.
“What man?””
“He said he was a family friend.””
Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.
“What did he ask?””
“About you.””
His heart started beating faster.
“What exactly?””
The receptionist paused.
“He asked whether you had recently met someone named Renee Sterling.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
The warning was no longer a warning.
It was a threat.
“Did Lily talk to him?””
“No. She was in class.””
Daniel breathed again.
“Thank you for calling me.””
He hung up.
Then immediately called Renee.
She answered after one ring.
“Daniel?””
“Someone went to Lily’s school.””
Silence.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
Renee’s voice changed instantly.
The calm CEO disappeared.
“Is Lily safe?””
“Yes.””
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“No.””
His anger returned.
“You listen.””
A pause.
“I told you my daughter had nothing to do with this.””
“I know.””
“Then why does someone know where she goes to school?””
Renee sounded shaken.
“I don’t know.””
Again.
Those words.
The words he hated.
“I’m done with secrets.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
He looked across the street at the city.
“I want everything.””
“What?””
“Every document. Every name. Every piece of information you have.””
Renee was silent.
“Why?””
“Because whether I like it or not, I’m already involved.””
His voice lowered.
“And now they know my daughter exists.””
Another silence.
Then Renee spoke.
“Come back.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“Come back to Sterling.””
“No.””
“Please.””
The word surprised him.
Renee Sterling did not sound like a CEO.
She sounded like the woman from Room 608.
The woman who was afraid.
“Why?””
“Because if they are willing to approach your daughter’s school, then this has changed.””
Daniel waited.
Renee whispered:
“They are not trying to scare me anymore.””
A cold feeling moved through him.
“What are they trying to do?””
Renee answered quietly.
“Make sure I have no one left to protect me.””
Daniel looked at the contract still sitting in his car.
The twelve-million-dollar agreement.
The fake relationship.
The impossible arrangement.
But suddenly, the money meant nothing.
Because this was no longer about Renee Sterling.
It was about Lily.
And Daniel Hayes knew one thing with absolute certainty.
Nobody threatened his daughter and walked away.
When Daniel returned to Sterling Global that evening, the building was almost empty.
The lights on the executive floor were dim.
Renee was waiting in her office.
She looked relieved when she saw him.
But Daniel did not smile.
He placed the contract on her desk.
“I have conditions.””
Renee looked at the paper.
“You’re accepting?””
“I’m agreeing to your arrangement.””
She exhaled.
“But this isn’t because of the money.””
“I know.””
“First condition.””
“I’m listening.””
“No lies.””
Renee nodded.
“Agreed.””
“Second. Lily stays completely away from this.””
“Agreed.””
“Third.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“If anyone comes near my daughter again, this deal ends.””
Renee looked him in the eyes.
“Agreed.””
Daniel picked up the pen.
Then stopped.
“One more thing.””
“What?””
“I want to know who betrayed you.””
Renee stared at him.
Because she understood.
Daniel Hayes was no longer just helping her.
He was hunting with her.
And somewhere inside Sterling Global, someone realized something too late.
The stranger who answered a desperate phone call at 2:07 in the morning was not supposed to become Renee Sterling’s ally.
He was supposed to disappear.
But Daniel Hayes had spent his entire life fixing broken things.
May you like
And now he was about to fix the biggest broken thing he had ever seen.
Even if it meant tearing apart an empire to do it.
