Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Wrong Number

Daniel Hayes did not sleep that night.

Not because of the twelve million dollars.

Not because of the contract sitting untouched on his kitchen table.

Not even because a stranger had followed him home and warned him to stay away from Renee Sterling.

It was because of one sentence.

“She doesn’t tell people the truth.””

The words replayed in his mind over and over.

Daniel had spent his entire life learning one thing about people.

Everyone had secrets.

His customers had secrets.

His coworkers had secrets.

Even his own family had secrets.

But there was a difference between a secret and a lie.

A secret was something someone kept because they were afraid.

A lie was something someone told because they wanted something from you.

And Daniel still did not know which one Renee Sterling was hiding.

At 4:30 in the morning, he finally gave up trying to sleep.

He walked into the kitchen, made coffee, and stared at the contract again.

The paper looked exactly the same as it had hours earlier.

Twelve million dollars.

Six months.

A fake relationship.

A corporate war.

A dying billionaire.

It sounded like the kind of story people watched in movies because nobody would believe it could happen in real life.

But Daniel knew it was real.

Because he had been there.

He had sat beside Renee while she fought through pain she tried desperately not to show.

He had seen the fear in her eyes when she thought nobody would come.

And that was the part confusing him most.

If Renee was manipulating him, she was incredibly good at it.

Because Daniel still believed that the woman in Room 608 was genuinely terrified of being alone.

His phone buzzed.

For one second, he thought it was Renee.

It wasn’t.

It was Lily’s school reminding parents about an upcoming science project.

Daniel smiled faintly.

Life continued to be normal even when his own world had suddenly become impossible.

He put the phone down.

Then he made a decision.

He would meet Renee one more time.

But this time, he would ask questions.

Real questions.

And he would not leave until he had answers.

The Sterling headquarters occupied forty-seven floors of glass and steel in downtown Boston.

Daniel had passed the building hundreds of times.

He had never imagined he would one day walk through the front doors.

The security guard at the entrance immediately recognized him.

“Mr. Hayes?””

Daniel stopped.

“Yes?””

“Ms. Sterling is expecting you.””

That bothered him.

He had not called ahead.

He had not told anyone he was coming.

“How did she know?””

The guard simply smiled.

“She usually knows when someone important arrives.””

Daniel did not like that answer.

The elevator carried him to the executive floor.

When the doors opened, he found himself surrounded by a world completely different from his own.

Employees moved quickly.

Phones rang.

Screens displayed satellite images and financial charts.

Everyone looked like they had somewhere more important to be.

A woman approached him.

“Mr. Hayes?””

“Yes.””

“I’m Olivia Grant, Ms. Sterling’s executive assistant.””

She extended her hand.

Daniel shook it.

“Nice to meet you.””

Olivia studied him for a moment.

Not rudely.

Carefully.

“You’re different from what I expected.””

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

“What did you expect?””

She hesitated.

“Someone who wanted the money.””

Daniel almost laughed.

“At least you’re honest.””

Olivia looked uncomfortable.

“Honesty is complicated here.””

Before Daniel could ask what she meant, the office doors opened.

“Daniel.””

Renee stood there.

She looked different from the woman in the hospital.

Still pale.

Still fragile.

But stronger.

She wore a dark suit, her hair covered by the same soft scarf, and her expression carried the confidence of someone who had spent years commanding rooms.

Daniel realized something.

The woman in the hospital had not been weak.

She had only been exhausted.

“Come in,” she said.

Her office was enormous.

A wall of windows overlooked the city.

Awards lined the shelves.

Photographs covered one side of the room.

One photo caught Daniel’s attention.

A little girl standing beside an older man.

“Your father?””

Renee followed his gaze.

“Yes.””

“Arthur Sterling.””

She nodded.

“He built everything.””

Daniel looked at the photo.

“Did he trust people?””

A strange expression crossed Renee’s face.

“He trusted results.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

For a moment, Renee looked surprised.

Then she smiled slightly.

“You really don’t belong here.””

Daniel sat down.

“That’s becoming obvious.””

Silence filled the room.

Then Renee walked to her desk and placed a folder in front of him.

“I know about the man who approached you.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because he works for someone inside the company.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

Renee looked directly at him.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because if I knew, he wouldn’t still be alive.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Renee sat across from him.

“It means the person behind this is careful.””

She opened the folder.

Inside were printed emails.

“Three weeks before my diagnosis, someone accessed confidential medical files.””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“My medical records.””

“You think someone stole them?””

“I know someone did.””

“Why?””

Renee looked away.

“Because my illness was announced before I announced it.””

Daniel studied her.

“You’re saying someone wanted people to know you were sick.””

“Yes.””

“But why?””

“Because a sick CEO is easier to replace.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“And Marcus?””

Renee became quiet.

“He knew about the files.””

Daniel looked up.

“Why?””

“Because he was the person I trusted most.””

“That doesn’t answer the question.””

Renee sighed.

“Marcus had access to some private information because he was helping me review security issues.””

Daniel leaned back.

“So he could have leaked it.””

“Yes.””

“But you don’t know.””

“No.””

“And you still love him?””

The question surprised her.

She looked down.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel noticed something.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Pain.

Real pain.

“He left me when I needed him most,” she whispered.

Then she looked at him.

“But part of me still wants to believe there was a reason.””

Daniel understood that feeling.

After Sarah died, he had spent months searching for explanations that did not exist.

People wanted reasons for painful things.

Because random cruelty was harder to accept.

“So why did you call him that night?””

Renee froze.

Daniel noticed immediately.

That was the reaction of someone who had been asked the question before.

But never answered.

“I told you.””

“You called him because you didn’t want to die alone.””

“Yes.””

“But that’s not the whole reason.””

Renee looked at him.

Daniel continued.

“You were scared. I understand that.””

He leaned forward.

“But you weren’t just calling anyone. You were calling Marcus.””

Renee said nothing.

“Why?””

The room became silent.

Finally, she walked toward the window.

“When my father died, he left me something.””

Daniel waited.

“A private account.””

“Money?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Information.””

Daniel frowned.

“What kind of information?””

“Evidence.””

“Against who?””

Renee looked back at him.

“Against someone who wanted to destroy Sterling Global.””

Daniel stood slightly straighter.

“What does that have to do with Marcus?””

“Everything.””

She returned to the desk.

“My father believed someone inside the company was stealing from him.””

“Someone on the board?””

“Maybe.””

“Maybe?””

Renee’s expression hardened.

“My father died before he could prove it.””

“And you think Marcus found something?””

“No.””

She looked at Daniel.

“I think Marcus was looking for something.””

A cold feeling moved through Daniel.

“Looking for what?””

Renee opened another document.

A list of names.

Executives.

Investors.

Board members.

And one name highlighted in red.

Daniel recognized it.

“Who is Thomas Whitmore?””

Renee’s face changed.

“He’s the chairman of the board.””

“And?””

“He was my father’s closest friend.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Your father’s friend is trying to remove you?””

“I don’t know.””

“Again.””

Renee looked frustrated.

“Because I don’t know, Daniel.””

Her voice rose slightly.

“Do you think I enjoy not having answers?””

The anger disappeared as quickly as it came.

She looked exhausted.

“I spent my entire life believing I understood the world around me.””

She lowered her voice.

“Then one diagnosis changed everything.””

Daniel softened.

Because beneath the billionaire CEO, beneath the powerful woman, he saw the same person from the hospital.

Someone afraid.

Someone abandoned.

Someone trying to survive.

“Why didn’t you tell your board about the evidence?””

“Because I don’t know who I can trust.””

“And you trust me?””

Renee looked at him.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you have nothing to gain.””

Daniel almost smiled.

“Twelve million dollars says otherwise.””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“The money is a consequence.””

He studied her.

“Then what am I?””

Renee looked away.

“For some reason, you’re the only person who treated me like I was still human.””

Daniel did not know how to respond.

Before he could, the office door opened.

Olivia stepped inside.

“Ms. Sterling, I’m sorry, but you need to see this.””

Renee immediately became serious.

“What happened?””

Olivia handed her a tablet.

Daniel watched as Renee’s expression changed.

Not fear.

Shock.

“What is it?””

Renee turned the screen toward him.

An article had just been published.

BREAKING NEWS:

STERLING GLOBAL CEO RENEES STERLING’S HEALTH CONDITION WORSE THAN REPORTED.

Daniel read the article quickly.

The details were brutal.

Medical information.

Treatment failures.

Speculation about her ability to lead.

But then he saw the final paragraph.

A source close to Sterling Global claimed:

“Renee Sterling is no longer capable of making important decisions. The company must prepare for new leadership.””

Daniel looked at Renee.

“This was released today?””

“Yes.””

“Before the board meeting?””

“Yes.””

“Who benefits from this?””

Renee didn’t answer.

Because she already knew.

Someone was moving faster than expected.

Then Olivia spoke quietly.

“There’s something else.””

Renee looked at her.

“What?””

Olivia swallowed.

“The person who sent the article…”

She looked at Daniel.

“Used your name.””

Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.

“What?””

Olivia handed over the tablet.

At the bottom of the leaked documents was a witness statement.

A statement claiming Daniel Hayes had been hired by Renee Sterling to manipulate public opinion.

Daniel stared at the screen.

His name.

His life.

His reputation.

All connected to a story he had never agreed to become part of.

Renee looked horrified.

“This isn’t possible.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You said you didn’t know who was behind this.””

“I don’t.””

“But someone already knows about me.””

Renee stepped closer.

“Daniel…”

He held up his hand.

“No.””

He looked at the woman who had changed his life in less than a week.

The woman he had wanted to believe.

“What else haven’t you told me?””

Renee opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

And that silence was answer enough.

Because Daniel finally understood.

The man who warned him was right about one thing.

Renee Sterling was hiding the truth.

May you like

The only question was whether she was hiding it to protect herself…

or to protect him.
