Chapter 9: The Truth Hidden in the Shadows
The missing notebook changed everything.
Before, Ethan had been searching for answers.
Now he was being challenged.
Someone wanted him to stop.
Someone knew exactly what he was doing.
That meant the enemy was close.
Very close.
Ethan stood inside his office, staring at the message left behind.
*You should have stopped looking.*
The words were simple.
But the meaning was clear.
A threat.
Not just against him.
Against his family.
His first instinct was anger.
His second was fear.
Not for himself.
For Lily.
That was the one weakness he could never ignore.
The security team reviewed the footage.
At first, nothing appeared unusual.
The building had been secure.
The cameras showed no obvious intruder.
Then an investigator noticed something.
A camera had been disabled for exactly twelve minutes.
Not broken.
Disabled.
By someone with access.
Ethan looked at Robert.
“Who has security clearance?””
Robert answered slowly.
“Senior executives.””
“Names.””
Robert listed them.
The usual people.
Theodore.
Daniel.
A few others.
Ethan listened carefully.
Then he asked:
“Anyone else?””
Robert hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“Myself.””
Ethan nodded.
“I know.””
Robert looked uncomfortable.
“And you.””
The room became silent.
Because Ethan realized something.
The person who entered his office did not break in.
They walked in.
The investigation moved quickly.
Every access record was examined.
Every employee account.
Every security login.
Then they found something.
A duplicate authorization code.
Created six months earlier.
The code belonged to someone who should never have had it.
Daniel Cross.
Ethan closed his eyes.
The final piece was falling into place.
But something still bothered him.
Why?
Why would Daniel risk everything?
Why betray the person who gave him everything?
Ethan needed the answer.
That night, he called Daniel.
“I want to meet.””
Daniel answered after several rings.
“Where?””
“The place where we started.””
A small coffee shop.
The same one where they had planned their first hotel.
The same place where two young men once believed they could change the world.
Daniel arrived twenty minutes later.
He looked tired.
Older.
The confidence was gone.
“You found something,” Daniel said.
Ethan looked at him.
“Yes.””
Daniel sighed.
“I figured.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked away.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then:
“Do you remember when we first started?””
“Yes.””
“You were the dreamer.””
Ethan nodded.
“And I was the person who made the dream possible.””
“That is not true.””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“It is.””
“You were my partner.””
“Was I?””
Ethan stared.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Tell me something, Ethan.””
“What?””
“When investors saw you, what did they see?””
Ethan frowned.
“I don’t know.””
“They saw the founder.””
Daniel’s voice became bitter.
“When they saw me, they saw your assistant.””
“That’s not how I viewed you.””
“But that’s how the world viewed me.””
The pain in his voice was real.
And Ethan finally understood.
This betrayal did not begin with greed.
It began with resentment.
A small wound that grew for years.
But understanding did not erase responsibility.
“You stole from the company.””
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I wanted what I built.””
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“You destroyed what we built.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I thought I deserved more.””
Silence.
Then Ethan asked:
“Did Claire know?””
Daniel froze.
That was enough.
Ethan saw the answer.
“She confronted you.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before she died.””
Ethan felt his heart break.
“What happened?””
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“She told me she believed there was still good in me.””
Ethan looked away.
Because that sounded exactly like Claire.
She always believed people could choose better.
Even when they had failed.
“What did you do?””
Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.
“I ignored her.””
The confession was almost a whisper.
“And after she died?””
“I tried to bury everything.””
Ethan stared at him.
“Why didn’t you stop?””
Daniel looked at the table.
“Because once you start protecting a lie, you have to keep protecting it.””
For the first time, Ethan saw something besides anger.
He saw a broken man.
A man who had allowed pride to destroy everything.
But Ethan also knew compassion could not replace justice.
“You will answer for this.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
Before Ethan could leave, Daniel grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
Ethan stopped.
“There is something you need to know.””
“What?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“I wasn’t the person who started it.””
Ethan stared.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Northbridge was not my idea.””
“Then whose?””
Daniel looked toward the window.
The answer seemed difficult to say.
Finally:
“Theodore introduced me to them.””
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“Theodore promised me a bigger role. More control. He said you would never give me what I deserved.””
Ethan stepped back.
“So Theodore used you.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why tell me now?””
Daniel looked broken.
“Because Claire was right.””
Ethan waited.
“She told me one day I would realize I had traded a lifetime of friendship for something that was never mine.””
The words hurt.
Because Ethan knew Claire had seen the truth before anyone else.
He stood.
The meeting was over.
But before leaving, Daniel said one final thing.
“Ethan.””
He turned.
“Theodore is dangerous.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t.””
His voice lowered.
“He knows things about you that nobody else knows.””
Ethan froze.
“What things?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Things Claire discovered.””
The answer chilled him.
Because if Theodore knew what Claire knew…
Then he was not just hiding fraud.
May you like
He was hiding something much worse.
And Ethan was about to uncover the final secret his wife died trying to reveal.
