Chapter 10: The Secret Claire Died Protecting

Ethan Vance had faced countless enemies.

Competitors who tried to destroy his reputation.

Investors who attempted hostile takeovers.

Rivals who spent millions trying to defeat him.

But none of those battles had ever felt as personal as this one.

Because every discovery led back to the same painful truth.

The people closest to him had known things he did not.

They had carried secrets while he believed everything was fine.

And now, the one person who had always protected him was gone.

Claire.

Ethan sat alone in his office long after midnight.

The city lights outside the window reflected against the glass, but he barely noticed them.

On his desk were three things.

Claire’s letter.

The investigation report.

And the final message left by the person who had stolen her notebook.

Someone was trying to erase the past.

But Ethan had learned something important.

Secrets did not disappear.

They waited.

And eventually, they surfaced.

A knock interrupted his thoughts.

“Come in.””

Robert entered quietly.

“You’re still here.””

Ethan looked up.

“So are you.””

Robert smiled faintly.

“I suppose neither of us knows how to stop.””

For a moment, they were silent.

Then Ethan asked:

“What did Claire discover?””

Robert looked down.

“I don’t know everything.””

“But you know something.””

Robert sighed.

“Yes.””

He sat across from Ethan.

“Claire discovered that the corruption was not only financial.””

“What does that mean?””

“She found evidence that someone was manipulating company decisions.””

Ethan frowned.

“Explain.””

Robert opened a folder.

“There were expansion projects that didn’t make sense.””

“Projects?””

“Yes. Hotels built in locations where the numbers looked good on paper but were actually risky.””

Ethan looked through the documents.

“That alone isn’t unusual.””

“No.””

Robert nodded.

“But these projects all had something in common.””

“What?””

“They benefited the same outside companies.””

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“Northbridge.””

“Yes.””

The pattern became clearer.

Someone was using the Grand Regent brand.

Using its reputation.

Using Ethan’s trust.

To create profit for themselves.

But Ethan still did not understand one thing.

“Why would Claire keep this from me?””

Robert looked at him sadly.

“Because she knew you.””

Ethan said nothing.

“She knew you would confront them immediately.””

“That’s what I should have done.””

“Maybe.””

Robert paused.

“But Claire worried you would destroy everything before you had enough proof.””

Ethan looked at the letter.

She had known him.

Even better than he knew himself.

The next morning, Ethan received a call from Natalie.

“Mr. Vance?””

“Yes.””

“I found something else.””

Ethan stood immediately.

“What?””

“Something Claire left behind.””

“Where?””

“At her old apartment.””

Ethan had avoided going there since her death.

Too many memories.

Too much pain.

But now he knew he had to.

An hour later, Ethan arrived.

The apartment looked exactly the same.

Claire’s books were still on the shelf.

Her favorite blanket was still on the chair.

A small vase of flowers sat near the window.

For a moment, Ethan forgot why he was there.

He was not a billionaire.

Not a CEO.

Not a man fighting betrayal.

He was just a husband who missed his wife.

Natalie handed him a small envelope.

“She asked me to keep this hidden.””

Ethan looked at it.

“Why?””

“She said if something happened to her, you would need it.””

His hands shook slightly.

Inside was a flash drive.

Nothing else.

Ethan took it back to his office.

The files inside were organized carefully.

Claire had always been organized.

The first file contained financial records.

The second contained employee interviews.

The third was labeled:

*Final Evidence.*

Ethan opened it.

A video appeared.

Claire.

His heart stopped.

She was sitting in the same apartment.

Recording herself.

Her face looked tired.

But determined.

“Ethan,” she said.

His eyes immediately filled.

“If you are watching this, then I’m sorry.””

He covered his mouth.

“I wanted to tell you everything myself.””

Claire looked down.

“But I was afraid.””

A long pause.

“Not because of what they could do to me.””

She looked directly at the camera.

“Because of what they could do to you.””

Ethan leaned closer.

“The person leading this operation is someone you trust.””

His breathing stopped.

“I know you will want to confront him. I know you will feel betrayed.””

Claire’s voice became softer.

“But please remember something.””

She smiled sadly.

“You built this company because you believed people mattered.””

A tear rolled down Ethan’s face.

“Do not let one person’s greed turn you into someone you are not.””

The video ended.

But one final file opened automatically.

A single name.

The person Claire believed was responsible.

Ethan stared.

The room became silent.

Because the name was not Theodore.

It was not Daniel.

May you like

It was someone even closer.

Someone Ethan never suspected.
