Chapter 8: The Daughter Who Remembered Everything
Ethan barely slept.
The image of Claire and Daniel stayed in his mind.
Every memory felt different now.
Every conversation.
Every smile.
Every moment of trust.
He hated that.
He hated that suspicion had entered places where love and friendship used to live.
But he knew something important.
He could not let betrayal destroy his ability to think clearly.
That was exactly what people like Daniel expected.
Anger.
Chaos.
Mistakes.
Ethan had built an empire by staying calm when others panicked.
He would do the same now.
For Claire.
For Lily.
For everyone who still believed in him.
The next morning, Ethan visited the building in the photograph.
It was not one of the Grand Regent properties.
It was a small office in an older part of the city.
The sign outside read:
*Bennett Consulting Group.*
Claire’s family name.
Ethan walked inside.
A woman at the reception desk looked surprised.
“Mr. Vance?””
“Yes.””
“How can I help you?””
“I’m looking for information about a meeting my wife had here.””
The woman’s expression softened.
“Claire?””
Ethan nodded.
“She was here.””
“When?””
“About three months before she passed.””
Ethan’s heart tightened.
“Who did she meet?””
The woman hesitated.
“Her cousin Natalie told me not to discuss it unless you came personally.””
“Why?””
“Because Claire wanted to protect you.””
Ethan closed his eyes briefly.
Even near the end, Claire had still been protecting him.
“Please,” he said.
“I need to know.””
The woman opened a drawer.
She removed a small box.
“Claire left this here.””
Ethan stared.
Another secret.
Another piece of a life his wife had hidden.
Inside the box was a notebook.
Her handwriting filled the pages.
Dates.
Names.
Numbers.
And one repeated phrase.
*Trust the person who protects people, not the person who protects the company image.*
Ethan read that sentence again.
Then he understood.
Claire had not only been investigating corruption.
She had been searching for someone honest inside the company.
Someone who knew the truth.
Someone who could expose it.
Near the end of the notebook was a name.
Not Daniel.
Not Theodore.
Someone else.
A name Ethan recognized immediately.
*Robert Hale.*
He froze.
Robert?
The man who had stood beside him?
The man who had looked devastated when he discovered the truth?
Ethan felt the world shift again.
But then he noticed something.
The note beside Robert’s name.
*He knows more than he admits. But I believe he is trying to protect people.*
Ethan exhaled.
So Robert was not the enemy.
But he had secrets.
That afternoon, Ethan confronted Robert.
Not angrily.
Carefully.
“I found Claire’s notebook.””
Robert went silent.
“Where?””
“That doesn’t matter.””
Robert looked nervous.
“What did she write?””
“That you know more than you admitted.””
Robert lowered his eyes.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then:
“She was right.””
Ethan’s chest tightened.
“Explain.””
Robert sat down.
“When Claire started asking questions, I noticed problems.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Robert looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“That I was wrong.””
Ethan stared.
Robert continued.
“I thought maybe it was just poor management. Bad decisions. Nothing more.””
“And then?””
“Then I found evidence.””
“What evidence?””
Robert looked at him.
“That certain executives were intentionally hiding information.””
“Who?””
Robert hesitated.
“Daniel.””
The name hurt again.
“But I didn’t know how deep it went.””
Ethan remained quiet.
“Claire knew,” Robert said.
“She did.””
“She tried to gather proof.””
Ethan looked down.
“And then she died.””
Robert’s expression became painful.
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
Then Ethan asked:
“What happened to her investigation after that?””
Robert swallowed.
“It disappeared.””
“Who made it disappear?””
Robert looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
Ethan believed him.
Because fear in Robert’s eyes was real.
That evening, Ethan returned home early.
For the first time in days, he ignored the company.
He focused only on Lily.
She sat at the kitchen table drawing pictures.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Are you sad?””
Ethan forced a smile.
“Why do you ask?””
“You look like when Mommy was sick.””
The words hit him.
Children noticed everything.
Even what adults tried to hide.
Ethan sat beside her.
“I miss Mommy.””
Lily nodded.
“Me too.””
She looked at her drawing.
“I made something for you.””
Ethan looked.
It was a picture of three people holding hands.
Himself.
Lily.
Claire.
His throat tightened.
“Do you remember Mommy?””
“A little.””
“What do you remember?””
Lily smiled.
“She always said people are more important than things.””
Ethan looked away.
Because those were the exact words Claire had lived by.
Even Lily remembered.
And suddenly, Ethan knew something.
This fight was bigger than money.
Bigger than a company.
It was about protecting the values Claire believed in.
That night, Ethan made a decision.
He would expose everyone involved.
No matter how painful.
No matter who stood in his way.
But before he could begin, his private security team discovered something alarming.
Someone had entered his office after hours.
Nothing was stolen.
Nothing was damaged.
Except one thing.
Claire’s notebook was missing.
And whoever took it left a message behind.
Written on his desk.
*You should have stopped looking.*
Ethan stared at the words.
Because now he knew.
The person responsible was not running anymore.
May you like
They were watching him.
And they were getting desperate.
