Chapter 11: The Betrayal No One Expected
Ethan stared at the screen.
He read the name again.
And again.
As if repeating it would somehow change reality.
But it did not.
The truth remained.
The person Claire identified was:
*Robert Hale.*
The man sitting beside him.
The man who helped him investigate.
The man who claimed he wanted justice.
For several minutes, Ethan did nothing.
His mind refused to accept it.
Because Robert had seemed genuine.
His regret.
His concern.
His loyalty.
Was it all an act?
Ethan closed the file.
He needed to know.
Not assume.
Not react.
Know.
That was what Claire would have wanted.
Robert arrived at the office shortly after.
He immediately noticed something was wrong.
“Ethan?””
Ethan looked at him.
“We need to talk.””
Robert sat down.
“What happened?””
Ethan placed the flash drive on the table.
Robert’s expression changed.
“Where did you get that?””
The question was small.
But Ethan noticed.
“You knew about it.””
Robert became quiet.
“I knew Claire had something.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Robert looked away.
“Because I was afraid.””
Again.
That word.
Everyone was afraid.
But fear had consequences.
“What was on it?””
Robert didn’t answer.
Ethan leaned forward.
“Robert.””
The man closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“She was going to expose me.””
The room felt colder.
Ethan sat back.
“Why?””
Robert’s face showed years of regret.
“Because I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“I approved something I should not have approved.””
Ethan waited.
Robert continued.
“Years ago, when the company expanded, I trusted the wrong people.””
“Northbridge?””
Robert nodded.
“But I didn’t know what they were doing.””
“Did you benefit?””
Silence.
That silence was an answer.
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“How much?””
Robert looked ashamed.
“Not directly.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
Robert lowered his head.
“Yes.””
The word hurt more than Ethan expected.
Because he wanted Robert to deny it.
He wanted there to be some misunderstanding.
But there wasn’t.
“Claire found out.””
“Yes.””
“And she confronted you.””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
Robert’s eyes filled.
“She told me I had a choice.””
“What choice?””
“To admit the truth or continue protecting myself.””
Ethan stared.
“And you chose?””
Robert whispered:
“I chose fear.””
The confession broke something.
Not anger.
Disappointment.
The worst kind.
Because Ethan had believed Robert was better.
But then Robert said something unexpected.
“I did not hurt Claire.””
Ethan looked up.
Robert continued.
“I know what it looks like.””
“It looks like you helped hide corruption.””
“Yes.””
“It looks like you lied.””
“Yes.””
“But I never wanted her harmed.””
Ethan studied him.
There was something different in his voice.
Pain.
Real pain.
“What happened to Claire?””
Robert looked away.
“I don’t know.””
Ethan frowned.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“Then who does?””
Robert hesitated.
Then:
“Theodore.””
Ethan froze.
“What?””
“Theodore knew Claire was investigating.””
“How?””
“Because I told him.””
Ethan stood.
“You told him?””
Robert nodded slowly.
“I thought he could help me fix the situation.””
“You trusted him?””
“Yes.””
A bitter laugh escaped Ethan.
“Everyone trusted Theodore.””
Robert looked devastated.
“And that was his greatest strength.””
That evening, Ethan confronted Theodore.
Not in anger.
Not with accusations.
With evidence.
Theodore entered the office confidently.
“You wanted to see me?””
“Yes.””
Ethan placed the documents on the desk.
Theodore looked at them.
His expression barely changed.
“I assume this is about Northbridge.””
“It is.””
Theodore smiled.
“You finally understand.””
Ethan narrowed his eyes.
“Understand what?””
“That this company was never as clean as you believed.””
Ethan studied him.
“You’re not denying it.””
“Why would I?””
The answer surprised him.
Theodore leaned back.
“For years, I watched you play hero.””
“Hero?””
“Yes.””
He laughed.
“You thought kindness could run a billion-dollar company.””
Ethan’s voice became cold.
“And you think greed can?””
Theodore smiled.
“Greed builds empires.””
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“People do.””
Theodore stood.
“That’s why you will lose.””
“Lose?””
“Yes.””
Theodore walked closer.
“Because you care.””
Ethan said nothing.
“That is your weakness.””
For the first time, Ethan understood Theodore completely.
This was not just about money.
It was about belief.
Theodore believed compassion was weakness.
Ethan believed it was strength.
And they could never coexist.
Before leaving, Theodore stopped.
“You should ask Robert about the night Claire died.””
Ethan froze.
“What?””
Theodore smiled.
“Maybe then you’ll understand everything.””
He walked away.
May you like
Leaving Ethan with the one question he feared most.
What really happened the night Claire died?
