Chapter 9: The Dead Man in the Photograph

The photograph was still open on Cole's phone.

The teenage boy sitting inside the old Bennett house was unmistakably Noah.

The man standing behind him looked remarkably similar to Raymond Bennett.

But Daniel insisted it wasn't his father.

"Frank had a brother?"" Cole asked.

Daniel nodded.

"His name was Victor.""

Sarah frowned.

"Why would he look like your father?""

"Because Victor worked for him. He spent years pretending to be Raymond whenever my father wanted to avoid being seen.""

Cole stared.

"You're telling me my father had a double?""

Daniel shook his head.

"Not exactly. Victor and Raymond looked similar, but they were never identical. They used disguises, paperwork, and forged signatures.""

Mason looked frightened.

"Is he the man who took me?""

Daniel pulled his son closer.

"He's one of them.""

Sarah examined the photograph.

"Where is Victor now?""

Daniel looked at her.

"That's the problem. Officially, he died twelve years ago.""

Cole shook his head.

"How?""

"Car accident. At least, that's what the report said.""

Sarah's expression hardened.

"My father signed that report.""

"Yes.""

She turned away.

For a moment, she looked like someone who had just discovered that her entire childhood had been built around a lie.

Then she straightened.

"Nobody is taking that boy anywhere without law enforcement.""

Cole nodded.

"Agreed.""

He looked at Mason.

"You're staying with Jace and Duke.""

Mason immediately shook his head.

"No.""

"Son—"

"I'm not letting them take my brother too.""

Daniel held his shoulders.

"Mason, listen to me.""

The boy looked at him.

"You've been through enough. I won't let anyone use you again.""

Mason's eyes filled.

"But what if they hurt Noah?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Cole crouched beside him.

"We're going to get your brother back.""

"Promise?""

Cole looked into the boy's eyes.

"I promise.""

Sarah began organizing the officers.

She requested backup from the county sheriff's office and contacted a state investigator.

Then she examined the message again.

"There's something wrong here.""

"What?"" Cole asked.

"Frank told us to bring Mason and the original necklace. Why would he need both?""

Daniel looked at the silver pendant.

"Because the necklace isn't just a key.""

Cole turned it over.

The small engraving on the back was barely visible.

He rubbed away a layer of grime.

There were numbers beneath the initials.

A sequence of eight digits.

Sarah examined them.

"Could be an account number.""

Daniel shook his head.

"It's a storage locker.""

Cole looked at him.

"How do you know?""

"Your father used to keep important records in a private storage facility. He never trusted banks with anything that could expose him.""

"Where?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Outside Conway.""

Sarah immediately wrote down the location.

"Do you know the address?""

Daniel shook his head.

"Only the number. Locker 417.""

Cole looked at the necklace.

"That's why Rachel gave this to Mason.""

Daniel nodded.

"She must have found the locker key hidden inside the pendant.""

Mason looked down at his chest.

"Mom said it was the only thing I should never lose.""

Cole felt a wave of anger.

Rachel had known that the necklace was dangerous.

She had known that Mason would be targeted.

And she had still managed to put the key around his neck before she died.

Sarah approached.

"We need to secure the locker before Frank gets there.""

Cole nodded.

"Then we go to Conway.""

"Not without a warrant.""

Cole stared at her.

"That boy's brother is tied up in a house with an armed man.""

Sarah looked at the photograph.

"I know.""

She called the state investigator.

After a short conversation, she returned.

"We're getting an emergency response team. They'll secure the old Bennett property.""

"Good.""

"But nobody moves until they arrive.""

Cole looked at Daniel.

His brother was staring at the phone.

"What is it?""

Daniel enlarged the photograph.

Then he noticed something in the background.

A framed picture hanging above the fireplace.

It showed Raymond Bennett standing beside Frank Dillard.

But there was a third person.

A young woman.

Daniel's face changed.

"That's Rachel.""

Cole frowned.

"Why would Rachel be in a photograph with Frank and our father?""

Daniel shook his head.

"She wasn't just connected to us through the children.""

He looked at the picture again.

"She knew Victor before she met me.""

Mason looked up.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then he spoke.

"Rachel was the one who originally helped Victor get inside the garage.""

Cole stared at him.

"Are you saying she was involved?""

"No. I'm saying she was working undercover.""

Sarah stepped closer.

"Undercover for whom?""

Daniel looked toward the door.

"Your father.""

Sarah's face tightened.

"My father?""

Daniel nodded.

"Before he became sheriff, Robert Collins was an investigator. He asked Rachel to help him gather evidence against Raymond.""

Sarah stared at the photograph.

"Then why did he help Raymond?""

"Because somebody threatened his family.""

The silence that followed was heavy.

Sarah slowly lowered her radio.

"Who?""

Daniel looked at Cole.

"Victor.""

A sudden notification sounded from Cole's phone.

Another message.

This time, it contained a short video.

Cole pressed play.

The camera showed Noah sitting in a wooden chair.

His wrists were tied.

His face was bruised.

He looked directly into the camera.

"Uncle Cole?""

Cole felt his throat close.

Noah continued.

"If you're watching this, please don't come alone.""

A door opened behind him.

A man entered.

The camera moved.

And a voice spoke.

"Tell your uncle what happens if he brings the police.""

Noah looked down.

Then he whispered:

"They said they'll kill my father again.""

The video ended.

Cole stared at the screen.

Daniel was shaking.

Mason began crying.

Then a final message appeared.

One hour. No police. No mistakes.

Sarah looked toward the garage entrance.

The emergency response team was still several minutes away.

Cole put his phone in his pocket.

"Jace, get the bikes ready.""

Sarah stepped in front of him.

"You can't go there.""

"Watch me.""

"If you go without us, they'll kill the boy.""

Cole's eyes burned.

"If we wait, they might kill him anyway.""

Daniel slowly stood.

"I'm going with you.""

Cole shook his head.

"You're not strong enough.""

Daniel looked at his brother.

"I've spent fourteen years listening to my son cry through a wall. I'm not spending another minute sitting in a chair while somebody threatens him.""

Mason stepped forward.

"Then I'm coming too.""

Both brothers answered at once.

"No.""

Mason looked between them.

Then he reached into his pocket.

He pulled out the small silver necklace.

"There was something else Mom told me.""

Cole looked down.

"What?""

Mason turned the pendant over.

A tiny section near the key's base had opened.

Inside was a folded piece of paper, no larger than a fingernail.

Cole carefully unfolded it.

There was one sentence.

The person holding Noah is not the person giving the orders.

Cole looked at Daniel.

"Then who's giving the orders?""

Daniel's face went pale.

He stared at the paper.

Then at Sarah.

"Robert Collins.""

Sarah took a step backward.

"My father is dead.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Your father isn't dead, Sarah.""

He looked toward the highway.

"He's the one who called the station.""

At that exact moment, Sarah's radio crackled.

A familiar voice came through.

"Deputy Collins, I need you to bring Mason to me immediately.""

Sarah slowly lifted the radio.

"Who is this?""

The reply came without hesitation.

"Your father.""

May you like

Then the voice added:

"And Sarah, sweetheart, don't make me hurt another child to get what I want.""
