Chapter 15: The Family They Tried to Erase

Cole couldn't take his eyes off the photograph.

His own face stared back at him.

The same crooked smile.

The same scar near the eyebrow.

The same silver wolf ring.

Except the man in the photograph was younger.

And he was standing beside Rachel.

Daniel took the picture.

His expression changed immediately.

"That's not you.""

Cole looked at him.

"Then who is it?""

Raymond slowly sat down.

His hands began shaking.

"His name was Michael.""

Cole felt a strange chill.

"Who?""

Raymond looked toward him.

"Your twin brother.""

Nobody moved.

Cole laughed once, thinking he had misunderstood.

"I don't have a twin.""

Raymond lowered his head.

"You did.""

Daniel stared at their father.

"You told us he died.""

Raymond nodded.

"That's what I believed.""

Cole looked at the photograph again.

Rachel was holding a baby.

The young man beside her had his arm around her shoulders.

"Why was Rachel with him?""

Raymond took a long breath.

"Michael was separated from you at birth. Your mother had complications, and the hospital transferred him to another facility.""

Cole's voice dropped.

"Was he stolen too?""

Raymond nodded.

"Victor arranged it.""

Daniel looked at the photograph.

"How did Rachel find him?""

"She discovered the records while investigating Noah and Ethan's transfers.""

Cole felt sick.

His family had been dismantled piece by piece.

His father had been forced into hiding.

His brother had been imprisoned.

His nephews had been stolen.

And now he was learning that he had another brother.

"Where is Michael?"" Cole asked.

Raymond looked at the photograph.

"That's what I've been trying to find out.""

Sarah approached.

"There's another document.""

She opened the ledger.

A page near the back contained a list of names and dates.

The final entry read:

MICHAEL BENNETT — CURRENT IDENTITY: FRANK DILLARD.

Cole stared.

"Frank?""

Raymond nodded.

"Victor gave him a new identity. He was your brother's twin. He used the name Frank for years.""

Daniel stepped backward.

"Then Frank wasn't just working for Victor.""

"No," Raymond replied.

"He was part of the family.""

Cole felt something break inside him.

The man who had helped imprison Daniel.

The man who had threatened Mason.

The man who had kidnapped Noah and Ethan.

Was his own brother.

Sarah looked at the photograph.

"Then why is he helping Victor?""

Raymond answered quietly.

"Because Victor raised him.""

Cole shook his head.

"How?""

"Victor convinced Michael that your family abandoned him. He told him Raymond chose to keep you and Daniel while giving him away.""

Daniel's eyes filled.

"That's not true.""

"I know.""

Raymond looked at Cole.

"Michael spent his entire life believing you stole his family.""

Cole closed his eyes.

Then he opened them.

"Where is he?""

Sarah checked her phone.

"The church in Missouri.""

Cole took the ledger.

"Then that's where we're going.""

The abandoned church stood at the end of a narrow country road.

Its white paint had peeled away, and several windows were broken.

Police vehicles were positioned beyond the tree line.

A tactical team waited near the entrance.

Cole arrived with Daniel and Sarah.

Mason and Noah remained in protective custody with a state officer.

Raymond stayed with them.

Cole didn't want either boy exposed to another confrontation.

Sarah approached the team leader.

"We have two hostages inside. One teenager and one adult male.""

"Any weapons?""

"Unknown.""

Cole looked through a broken window.

Ethan sat in the front pew.

Frank stood beside him.

Victor was near the altar.

The black ledger lay on a wooden table.

Cole noticed something else.

A fourth chair.

And beside it, a photograph of Raymond.

Victor had prepared the church like a courtroom.

He wanted an audience.

Sarah gave the signal.

Two officers entered through the side door.

Another team moved toward the rear.

Cole followed Daniel through the main entrance.

"Police!"" Sarah shouted.

Victor turned.

He looked almost disappointed.

"You're late.""

Frank grabbed Ethan and pulled him toward the altar.

"Stay back!""

Cole stopped.

He stared at Frank.

"Michael.""

The man's face changed.

"Don't call me that.""

"That's your name.""

"My name is Frank.""

"Your name is Michael Bennett.""

Frank laughed bitterly.

"Funny how you suddenly remember family.""

Cole took a careful step forward.

"I didn't know you existed.""

"That's convenient.""

"I was a child.""

"So was I!""

Frank's voice cracked.

He pointed toward Victor.

"He was the only person who ever told me the truth.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Michael, he lied to you.""

Frank turned.

"Stay out of this.""

"Your family never abandoned you.""

"Then where were you?""

Daniel had no answer.

Frank's eyes filled.

"Where were you when I was sleeping in a stranger's house? Where were you when Victor told me my mother didn't want me?""

Cole took another step.

"Rachel wanted you.""

Frank looked at him.

"Don't.""

"She spent years searching for you.""

"Shut up!""

"She found you.""

Frank's expression changed.

Cole continued.

"She took that photograph. She knew who you were.""

Frank looked at the picture on the altar.

For the first time, his hands began shaking.

Victor suddenly stepped forward.

"Enough.""

He pointed a gun at Cole.

"Put the ledger down.""

Sarah raised her weapon.

"Drop yours!""

Victor laughed.

"You people still think this is about money?""

He pointed toward Frank.

"This boy was the only one who understood what Raymond built.""

Frank looked at him.

"Don't call me that.""

Victor turned.

"What?""

"My name.""

Victor frowned.

Frank slowly released Ethan.

The boy ran toward Daniel.

Daniel caught him.

Frank stared at Victor.

"You told me my mother abandoned me.""

Victor said nothing.

"You told me my brothers never wanted me.""

"Michael—"

"You told me Rachel was dead.""

Victor's expression hardened.

"She should have stayed dead.""

Frank looked toward Cole.

Then back at Victor.

"You used me.""

Victor raised the gun.

Sarah fired.

The shot struck Victor's shoulder.

His weapon fell.

Officers rushed forward.

Within seconds, Victor was on the floor, restrained and bleeding.

Frank stood motionless.

Cole approached him.

For several seconds, neither brother spoke.

Then Cole held out his hand.

"Come home, Michael.""

Frank looked at it.

His eyes filled.

"I don't know how.""

Cole stepped closer.

"Neither do I.""

He pulled his brother into an embrace.

And Michael finally began to cry.

Six months later, the old garage had been demolished.

The underground chamber was sealed after investigators recovered the remaining evidence.

Victor Dillard and several accomplices were charged with kidnapping, fraud, conspiracy, and multiple other crimes.

Travis Rourke pleaded guilty after investigators uncovered years of evidence showing that he had knowingly confined Mason and helped conceal Daniel's imprisonment.

Robert Collins's involvement was also exposed.

His estate was searched, and investigators recovered documents proving that he had helped arrange the children's transfers.

Sarah resigned from the county sheriff's office while the investigation continued.

She later joined a state task force dedicated to missing children.

Margaret cooperated fully with investigators.

She admitted her part in hiding Raymond and withholding information about Rachel's death.

She also testified about Victor's operation.

The stolen money was traced through several accounts.

Most of Mason's inheritance was recovered.

The legal ownership of the old properties was restored to the family.

But the most important things couldn't be measured in dollars.

Daniel needed months of medical treatment.

Noah struggled with nightmares.

Ethan had trouble trusting adults.

Michael spent weeks refusing to answer when anyone called him by his birth name.

And Mason had one request.

He wanted the entire family together for dinner.

On a warm Sunday afternoon, the Iron Wolves gathered outside a small roadside restaurant.

Seven motorcycles stood in a row.

Cole sat at a picnic table with Daniel, Michael, and the three boys.

Mason was laughing at something Jace had said.

Noah was trying to convince Duke to teach him how to ride.

Ethan was showing Sarah a drawing of the family.

Daniel leaned back.

"Never thought I'd see this again.""

Cole looked around.

"Neither did I.""

Michael sat quietly beside him.

After a moment, he spoke.

"Do you think Mom would have liked this?""

Cole smiled.

"She would have complained about the noise.""

Michael laughed.

"Then she'd have made us all sit down and eat.""

Daniel raised his glass.

"To Rachel.""

Everyone lifted theirs.

"To Rachel.""

Mason looked at Cole.

"Uncle Cole?""

"Yeah, buddy?""

"Do you remember the first day we met?""

Cole nodded.

"You were working under that truck.""

"And you gave me water.""

"I did.""

Mason smiled.

"That was the first time in almost a year somebody asked me if I was okay.""

Cole looked at him.

"Well, I'm going to keep asking.""

Mason laughed.

Then he reached into his pocket.

He pulled out the little silver necklace his mother had given him.

The pendant was no longer locked.

Inside was a tiny photograph of Rachel holding three newborn babies.

Beneath it was a handwritten message.

My boys, if the world ever tells you that you have no family, remember that you were loved before you ever took your first breath.

Mason read it aloud.

Daniel lowered his head.

Michael wiped his eyes.

Cole looked at the three boys.

For fourteen years, someone had tried to erase their family.

Someone had stolen their names, their childhoods, their money, and their future.

But they hadn't succeeded.

Because a thirteen-year-old boy had finally been offered something as simple as a bottle of water.

And one man had decided that a child deserved better.

Cole raised his glass one final time.

"To the family we found.""

Jace lifted his drink.

"To the family we brought home.""

Mason smiled.

Then he looked at the seven motorcycles waiting beneath the afternoon sun.

"Can I ride with you someday?""

Cole laughed.

"When you're old enough.""

Mason grinned.

"Promise?""

Cole placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Promise.""

May you like

And for the first time in nearly a year, Mason didn't have to look toward a garage before deciding whether he was allowed to smile.

He was home.
