Chapter 12: The Woman Who Knew Everything

Sarah accelerated.

The patrol vehicle surged down the highway.

Cole called Jace and told him to keep Daniel and the boys in the secure vehicle.

Then he called the state investigator.

"Shots fired at the storage facility outside Conway. Victor Dillard is there. We have an elderly woman possibly involved.""

The investigator confirmed that two units were already approaching.

Cole stared through the windshield.

"How far?""

"Eight minutes.""

"We're closer.""

"Do not enter until backup arrives.""

Cole looked at Sarah.

She already knew what he was thinking.

"Eight minutes is too long," she said.

They reached the storage facility in less than five.

A row of metal units stretched across a gravel lot.

The office lights were on.

A dark SUV sat beside unit 417.

Cole recognized the vehicle.

Frank's.

Sarah drew her weapon.

"Stay behind me.""

They moved toward the building.

The door was open.

Inside, a woman sat against the wall.

Her silver hair was disheveled, and blood stained one sleeve.

Cole recognized her immediately.

Margaret Bennett.

His grandmother.

"Grandma?""

She looked up.

For a moment, her eyes widened.

Then she began crying.

"Christopher?""

Cole knelt beside her.

"It's Cole.""

Margaret touched his face.

"Oh, sweetheart.""

He held her hand.

"Where's Victor?""

She pointed toward the storage units.

"Inside.""

Sarah checked her wound.

"You're going to be okay. We need to get you medical help.""

Margaret shook her head.

"Not until I tell you what happened.""

Cole looked toward unit 417.

"What did you find?""

Margaret reached into her coat and pulled out a small brass key.

"Everything.""

She handed it to him.

Inside the storage unit were filing cabinets, old photographs, account ledgers, and several boxes of documents.

One box carried the name RAYMOND BENNETT.

Another carried the name ROBERT COLLINS.

And the third had the name RACHEL BENNETT.

Cole opened the first box.

Inside were original vehicle registrations, payment records, and signed statements.

He found a photograph of his father standing beside Victor.

On the back was a handwritten note.

Raymond discovered the operation. Victor killed him before he could expose it.

Cole's hands tightened.

His father had not been part of the criminal operation.

He had been trying to stop it.

Daniel had been telling the truth.

Margaret watched him.

"Your father tried to do the right thing.""

Cole looked at her.

"Why didn't you tell us?""

"Because Victor threatened to kill you and Daniel. He said he would make sure the entire family disappeared.""

Sarah examined the documents.

"Where is Robert Collins?""

Margaret's expression darkened.

"He was working with Victor.""

"We know.""

"No. You don't understand. Robert was the one who arranged the children's transfer.""

Sarah looked sick.

"My father helped steal Noah?""

Margaret nodded.

"He signed the hospital documents. He arranged the payments. He also made sure Daniel's disappearance was classified as voluntary.""

Sarah stood.

"My father was supposed to protect people.""

Margaret reached for her hand.

"He was afraid. But fear doesn't excuse what he did.""

Cole examined the third box.

Inside were several letters.

One was addressed to Daniel.

Another to Rachel.

The final envelope carried Cole's name.

He opened it.

Cole,

If you're reading this, then Victor's lies have finally begun to collapse.

Your father left evidence that can destroy everything Victor built. He trusted me to keep it safe.

But there is something you must understand.

The money in Mason's trust was never stolen for profit. It was used to purchase something Victor believed belonged to him.

Cole looked up.

"What?""

Margaret's voice trembled.

"The old Bennett property.""

Cole frowned.

"The garage?""

"No. The land beneath it.""

She explained that Raymond had secretly purchased several adjoining properties years earlier.

One contained an underground storage chamber that predated the garage.

It had been used during the construction of a nearby industrial site.

Raymond discovered that the chamber connected to an old municipal service tunnel.

He used it to hide evidence from Victor.

And the money Rachel left Mason was tied to the legal ownership of that land.

"Why would Rachel leave the property to Mason?"" Cole asked.

"Because she knew Victor would eventually try to reclaim it.""

Sarah looked through the paperwork.

"There's something here.""

She pulled out a document.

It was a deed.

The property had been transferred into a trust under Mason's name.

But the transfer contained an unusual condition.

The trust could only be accessed when Mason reached eighteen, or when a court confirmed that his father had been unlawfully detained.

Daniel had been imprisoned for fourteen years.

The document was designed to protect the property until he could return.

Cole looked at Margaret.

"Why did Victor want the land?""

Margaret leaned closer.

"Because Raymond buried something beneath that garage.""

Cole felt his stomach tighten.

"What?""

Margaret shook her head.

"I never saw it. But your father told me it was the original evidence against Victor.""

Sarah looked toward the open storage unit.

"Then why did Victor come here?""

Margaret's face changed.

"Because he knew I had the location.""

A metallic crash came from the far end of the storage facility.

Cole turned.

A shadow moved between two rows of units.

"Victor!""

The figure ran.

Sarah raised her weapon.

"Police! Stop!""

The man disappeared around the corner.

Cole sprinted after him.

He reached the far gate just as a motorcycle engine roared.

Victor was already climbing onto a black bike.

Cole grabbed the back of his jacket.

Victor swung an elbow.

Cole stumbled but held on.

The motorcycle lurched forward.

Then a second biker appeared from the opposite side.

Jace.

He had followed them after securing the boys.

Jace blocked the exit with his motorcycle.

Victor slammed on the brakes and fell sideways.

The bike crashed against a metal barrier.

Sarah arrived moments later.

"Hands where I can see them!""

Victor slowly stood.

He looked at Cole.

Then he smiled.

"You really think you've won?""

Cole approached.

"Where's Frank?""

Victor laughed.

"Frank is the least of your problems.""

Sarah secured his wrists.

"You're under arrest.""

Victor looked at her.

"Your father would be disappointed.""

Sarah tightened the restraints.

"My father has disappointed me enough.""

As she led him toward the patrol car, Victor turned to Cole.

"Ask Margaret what happened to Rachel.""

Cole stopped.

"What?""

Victor's smile widened.

"Ask her why Rachel died before she could tell you where the second ledger was.""

Cole looked back toward the office.

Margaret was standing now, supported by a paramedic.

Her face had gone white.

"Grandma?""

She looked at him.

Then slowly shook her head.

"Don't listen to him.""

Cole approached.

"What happened to Rachel?""

Margaret closed her eyes.

"I was there when she died.""

"Why?""

Her voice broke.

"Because I gave her the wrong medicine.""

Cole stepped backward.

Margaret began crying.

"I thought it would make her sleep. I didn't know Victor had changed the bottle.""

Sarah looked at Victor.

He was still smiling.

Then he leaned toward Cole and whispered:

"Now you understand why I needed the boys.""

Cole stared at him.

Victor continued.

"Rachel wasn't supposed to die. She was supposed to tell us where she hid the second ledger.""

Cole felt his blood turn cold.

"Where is it?""

Victor's smile disappeared.

For the first time, he looked genuinely worried.

Margaret slowly reached into her coat.

She pulled out a tiny photograph.

On it was a familiar red toolbox.

But beneath the toolbox was a floor panel.

And beside the panel was a handwritten message.

The second ledger is where Daniel was kept.

Cole looked toward the highway.

The old garage.

The hidden basement.

The place where his brother had spent fourteen years.

The evidence was still there.

And Victor knew it.

Sarah's radio crackled.

A state investigator's voice came through.

"Deputy Collins, we have a problem.""

Sarah pressed the button.

"What problem?""

"We searched the garage. The basement is empty.""

Cole frowned.

"Empty?""

"Yes. The door is open, and there's evidence of a recent escape.""

Daniel's voice suddenly came from behind them.

"That's impossible.""

Cole turned.

Daniel stood beside the vehicle with Mason and Noah.

He looked terrified.

"I never told anyone how to open the second door.""

Sarah looked at him.

"Then who did?""

Daniel stared toward the old garage.

And whispered:

"Someone who has been down there before.""

Mason stepped forward.

He was holding a folded piece of paper.

"Mom left another message.""

Cole took it.

There were only six words.

The second prisoner is your grandfather.

May you like

Cole looked up.

And for the first time, nobody in the family knew which man was still buried beneath the garage.
