Chapter 8: The Name Written on the Birth Certificate
Daniel sat on an overturned oil drum while Sarah wrapped a blanket around his shoulders.
Mason refused to leave his side.
Every few seconds, the boy touched his father's arm as though checking that he was still there.
Cole stood nearby, holding the hospital photograph.
"Tell me everything," he said.
Daniel rubbed his face.
"I don't know where to begin.""
"Fourteen years, Daniel. Start anywhere.""
Daniel looked at Mason.
Then at the photograph.
"Before you were born, Rachel and I had another child. A boy.""
Mason stared.
"My brother?""
Daniel nodded.
"His name was Noah.""
The name seemed to settle over the room.
"Rachel delivered twins," Daniel continued.
"Two boys. You were born second. Noah was taken to another room shortly after delivery.""
"Why?"" Cole asked.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Your father told us there were complications. He said Noah needed specialized treatment.""
Cole shook his head.
"Raymond wouldn't have had anything to do with a hospital.""
"He paid for the private facility.""
Daniel reached for the photograph.
"Rachel begged him to bring the baby back. Your father promised he would.""
"And he didn't?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Three days later, the hospital said Noah had died.""
Mason looked down.
"Mom never told me.""
"She wanted to protect you.""
"From what?""
Daniel looked at Cole.
"From the truth.""
Sarah placed the hospital record on a nearby workbench.
"The document says Noah was transferred. There's no death certificate attached.""
"Because he didn't die," Daniel replied.
Cole stared at his brother.
"How do you know?""
"Because I saw him.""
The room went silent.
Daniel swallowed.
"About a year after the twins were born, I found a photograph in my father's office. Noah was older. Maybe eleven months. He was sitting on a woman's lap.""
"Who was the woman?""
"I didn't recognize her.""
Daniel looked toward the basement.
"But I recognized the birthmark.""
Mason touched his right ear.
A small crescent-shaped mark was visible just below it.
Daniel noticed.
He gently moved Mason's hair aside.
"That's where Noah's mark was.""
Mason looked confused.
"Wait. I have the same mark.""
Daniel nodded.
"Twins.""
Cole felt his stomach turn.
The photograph Sarah had found showed a child with the same mark.
But if that baby had been transferred fourteen years earlier, where was he now?
"Why didn't you go to the police?"" Sarah asked.
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"I did.""
"What happened?""
"Your father had friends everywhere. He controlled the records, the money, and the people who were supposed to protect us.""
Sarah looked down.
"My father?""
Daniel nodded.
"Your father helped Raymond arrange the transfer.""
Sarah's face drained of color.
She stepped backward.
"That's impossible.""
"I wish it were.""
"Why would he do that?""
Daniel looked at the floor.
"Because Raymond told him Noah was going to be raised by a wealthy family. He said the child would have a better life.""
"And you believed him?""
"No.""
Daniel's voice broke.
"I tried to stop it.""
He explained that he had gone to Raymond's garage two days after the twins were born.
He found records, payment receipts, and a list of people involved.
Raymond caught him.
Frank Dillard helped restrain him.
And Sheriff Collins signed the report claiming Daniel had left town voluntarily.
"Your father told everyone I had abandoned Rachel and the children," Daniel said.
Cole's fists clenched.
"Then what happened?""
"They brought me here.""
Daniel looked at the basement door.
"This place was supposed to be temporary. Frank said they'd release me once I signed a document saying Noah had died naturally.""
"Did you?""
"No.""
Daniel looked at Mason.
"Your mother knew I wouldn't.""
He explained that Rachel had spent months trying to find him.
She contacted a lawyer.
She obtained copies of the financial records.
She even found evidence that Raymond had moved money out of Mason's trust.
But before she could expose everything, she became seriously ill.
"She came here once," Daniel said.
Mason's head snapped up.
"She came here?""
"Yes. Frank let her see me for five minutes.""
"Why didn't you escape together?""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Because they threatened to take you.""
Mason began crying.
Daniel reached for his hand.
"Your mother made a choice. She went home so you could stay safe.""
Cole looked at the legal papers.
"Where did the money go?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Most of it was used to pay the people who arranged Noah's transfer. The rest went into an account Raymond controlled.""
Sarah picked up the hospital record.
"There has to be a record of the family who received him.""
"There was," Daniel replied.
"I saw it once.""
"Where?""
"Inside Raymond's personal ledger.""
Cole frowned.
"Where is that ledger now?""
Daniel looked toward Travis.
The man had stopped smiling.
"It's not in the toolbox," Daniel said.
Travis stared at the floor.
Cole approached him.
"You know where it is.""
Travis said nothing.
Duke crouched beside him.
"Now would be a good time to start talking.""
Travis swallowed.
"Frank has it.""
"Where?""
"I don't know.""
Cole leaned closer.
"Try again.""
Travis finally looked up.
"At the old Bennett house.""
Cole froze.
The family home had been sold after Raymond's death.
Nobody had lived there in years.
"Why would Frank keep it there?""
"Because your father never trusted computers. Everything was written down.""
Sarah pulled out her radio.
"I'll send a unit to secure the property.""
Travis suddenly laughed.
"You won't find anything.""
Sarah looked at him.
"Why?""
"Because Frank already went there.""
Cole reached for his phone.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
There was a photograph attached.
It showed the front porch of the old Bennett house.
A man stood beside the front door.
Frank Dillard.
And behind him was a teenage boy.
The boy wore a blue jacket.
He had dark hair.
And a crescent-shaped birthmark near his right ear.
Mason looked over Cole's shoulder.
His mouth fell open.
"That's him.""
Cole turned.
"Who?""
Mason pointed at the photograph.
"My brother.""
Daniel grabbed the phone.
For the first time since leaving the basement, he looked completely terrified.
"Noah.""
A second message appeared.
You have one hour. Bring Mason and the original necklace.
Then another photograph arrived.
It showed Noah sitting inside the old Bennett house.
His hands were tied.
A man stood behind him, holding a gun.
Cole looked at Daniel.
"Who is that?""
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then he whispered a name.
"Raymond.""
Cole's blood ran cold.
"That's impossible. Our father is dead.""
Daniel slowly shook his head.
"That's not our father.""
He zoomed in on the man's face.
Then he pointed to the scar beneath the man's left eye.
"That's Frank's brother.""
Cole looked at the photograph again.
May you like
And suddenly understood.
The man who had controlled the garage for fourteen years had never been working alone.
