Chapter 9: The Last Ride of Ethan Reed

The second time Ethan Reed disappeared, nobody believed he had chosen to leave.

Not even Hammer.

Because this time, Hammer knew his brother.

And Ethan had promised.

No more disappearing.

The entire Iron Haven Riders searched through the night.

Roads.

Fields.

Abandoned buildings.

Everywhere.

Nothing.

No Ethan.

No Victor.

No answers.

By morning, the police had arrived.

But Hammer didn’t trust waiting.

Neither did I.

Because the flash drive was still sitting on my kitchen table.

The truth Ethan risked everything to protect.

Hammer stood beside the table.

“We need to open it.””

Lily looked at him.

“Are you sure?””

“No.””

That honesty surprised me.

“But I’m done being afraid of what I’ll find.””

He looked at the drive.

“For twenty-two years, I lived with a story that wasn’t true.””

He picked it up.

“I’m ready for the truth.””

We connected it to a laptop.

A single folder appeared.

Ethan’s Last Message.

Nobody spoke.

Hammer opened it.

A video began.

Ethan appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But calm.

“If you’re watching this, I’m probably gone.””

Lily covered her mouth.

Hammer stared.

Ethan continued.

“I need you to understand something.””

He looked directly into the camera.

“I never stopped loving my brother.””

Hammer looked away.

The pain was immediate.

“I disappeared because I believed it was the only way.””

Ethan took a breath.

“The people behind this are not just criminals.””

The screen changed.

Documents appeared.

Names.

Companies.

Payments.

Evidence.

“This goes higher than anyone knows.””

Hammer leaned closer.

Then froze.

Because one name appeared.

A name he recognized.

“No…”

I looked at him.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

The video continued.

“One person helped them.””

Ethan’s voice became quieter.

“Someone I trusted.””

The screen changed again.

A photograph appeared.

A man.

Someone from town.

Someone I had seen before.

Hammer whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

“Who is he?””

Hammer didn’t move.

Then he said the name.

“Thomas Vale.””

I recognized it immediately.

Everyone did.

Thomas Vale was one of the richest men in the county.

A businessman.

A respected community leader.

A man who donated money to schools.

A man everyone trusted.

“He was involved?”” Lily whispered.

Ethan’s video continued.

“Thomas knew everything.””

Hammer closed his eyes.

“Why didn’t I see it?””

The question broke my heart.

Because sometimes the hardest truth wasn’t discovering a monster.

It was discovering that the monster had always looked like a good person.

Then another message appeared.

Coordinates.

A location.

Hammer looked.

“He has Ethan.””

“How do you know?””

“Because this is where Thomas keeps things he doesn’t want found.””

He grabbed his jacket.

“No.””

I stopped him.

Everyone looked at me.

“You’re not going alone.””

Hammer stared.

“This is dangerous.””

“So is leaving him.””

Lily stepped forward.

“I’m coming.””

Hammer looked at her.

“You don’t have to.””

“Yes.””

Her voice was firm.

“He spent twenty-two years protecting me.””

She looked at the screen.

“Now I protect him.””

Noah quietly stood.

Hammer immediately shook his head.

“No.””

My son looked at him.

“I know where he is.””

Everyone froze.

“How?””

Noah pointed at the coordinates.

“I saw the place.””

Hammer stared.

“When?””

“Last night.””

A cold silence followed.

“What did you see?””

Noah looked nervous.

“Ethan was there.””

My heart sank.

“Was he okay?””

Noah looked down.

“He was hurt.””

Hammer’s face changed.

“But alive?””

Noah nodded.

“He said to tell you something.””

Hammer moved closer.

“What?””

Noah looked at him.

“He said…”

My son paused.

“He said don’t make the same mistake twice.””

Hammer went completely still.

Then he understood.

Twenty-two years ago, Ethan had disappeared to protect him.

Now Hammer was about to do the same thing.

Run into danger alone.

Hammer looked at the riders.

Then at Lily.

Then at me.

Finally at Noah.

And for the first time…

He didn’t act like a leader.

He acted like a brother.

“Then we go together.””

An hour later, the Iron Haven Riders rode out.

Not for revenge.

Not for war.

For family.

The road ahead was dark.

But this time, Ethan Reed wasn’t disappearing into it alone.

Because his brother was coming.

And everyone who had tried to erase him was about to learn one thing.

Some people can be buried.

Some secrets can be hidden.

But family has a way of coming back.

May you like

And when it does…

It brings the truth with it.
