Chapter 8: The Truth That Almost Destroyed Two Brothers

The silence after Victor’s words felt unbearable.

Hammer stared at Ethan.

Not with anger.

Not yet.

With confusion.

“What night?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

Because Ethan had faced dangerous men without fear.

But this question broke him.

“Ethan.””

Hammer’s voice was quieter now.

“What happened that night?””

Ethan looked down.

“I was supposed to meet you.””

Hammer froze.

“What?””

“The night I disappeared.””

The memory seemed to hurt him.

“I was going to tell you everything.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Ethan looked at him.

“Because you came.””

Hammer frowned.

“I came?””

“Yes.””

Victor smiled.

“Now we’re getting somewhere.””

Ethan ignored him.

“You followed me.””

Hammer shook his head.

“I don’t remember that.””

“You wouldn’t.””

The words confused everyone.

“Why?””

Ethan looked toward the road.

“Because someone drugged you.””

Hammer’s face changed.

“What?””

“You thought you were following me because you wanted answers.””

Ethan’s voice became heavy.

“But you were being used.””

Victor laughed.

“This is beautiful.””

Hammer turned.

“Shut up.””

Victor didn’t.

“Your brother spent twenty-two years blaming himself. You spent twenty-two years blaming him.””

He smiled.

“And neither of you knew the truth.””

Hammer looked at Ethan.

“Who did this?””

Ethan looked at Victor.

“They did.””

Victor stopped smiling.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Hammer noticed.

“You’re afraid.””

Victor’s expression hardened.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Hammer stepped closer.

“You’re afraid because the evidence can destroy you.””

Victor looked at the riders.

“Do you really think this changes anything?””

He raised his phone.

“You think people will believe a biker gang and a missing man?””

Hammer smiled coldly.

“No.””

Victor frowned.

“What?””

Hammer looked around.

The riders had been silent.

But now several of them pulled out their phones.

Recording.

Victor’s face changed.

“You—”

“You walked into a parking lot full of witnesses,” Hammer said.

“You threatened my family.””

He stepped forward.

“And you explained exactly enough for everyone to know what kind of person you are.””

Victor’s confidence disappeared.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

Then suddenly—

A loud crash came from the side of the property.

Everyone turned.

A second group had entered.

Not SUVs.

Motorcycles.

But they weren’t Iron Haven.

They were armed men wearing no colors.

Victor smiled again.

“You really thought I came alone?””

Hammer immediately shouted.

“Inside!””

Everything happened at once.

The riders moved.

Not like a gang.

Like a family protecting each other.

I grabbed Noah and pulled him toward the house.

Lily followed.

Ethan stayed outside.

“No!””

Lily shouted.

But Ethan shook his head.

“I have to.””

Hammer looked at him.

“No more disappearing.””

Ethan met his eyes.

“No more.””

Then the two brothers stood together.

The way they should have twenty-two years earlier.

The fight lasted minutes.

But those minutes felt like hours.

The sound of engines.

Shouting.

Footsteps.

The crash of metal.

I kept Noah behind me.

Then he suddenly pulled away.

“Noah!””

He wasn’t running.

He was pointing.

At the old toolbox Ethan had brought from the cabin.

“The key.””

I looked.

“What?””

“The key opens something else.””

I stared at him.

“How do you know?””

Noah looked confused.

“He told me.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

Noah looked toward the window.

“Ethan.””

But Ethan was outside.

I grabbed the toolbox.

Inside was the old key.

I searched through it.

Then I saw something.

A small hidden compartment.

The key fit.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a note.

My hands shook as I opened it.

The handwriting was Ethan’s.

If you found this, it means they found me too.

The truth is bigger than you think.

Trust no one.

Not even those who claim to be helping.

I felt a chill.

Because there was one more line.

One sentence written beneath everything else.

A sentence that made my blood run cold.

The person who started this is still close.

Very close.

Outside, the fighting stopped.

Too suddenly.

I looked through the window.

Hammer was standing over Victor.

But Ethan wasn’t there.

My heart dropped.

I ran outside.

“Where is Ethan?””

Nobody answered.

Hammer looked around.

Then everyone realized.

Ethan was gone.

Again.

But this time…

May you like

He hadn’t disappeared.

Someone had taken him.
