Chapter 5: The Man Who Came Back From the Dead

We didn’t leave immediately.

That was the first mistake.

At least, that was what Hammer told me later.

Because by waiting even a few hours, someone else learned that Ethan Reed’s secret had finally been uncovered.

We returned to town just before sunset.

Hammer wanted to prepare.

Lily wanted to rest.

And I wanted answers.

Too many questions were spinning through my head.

Who was Ethan really hiding from?

Why could Noah see things nobody else could?

And why had an eight-year-old boy been pulled into a mystery older than he was?

I found Hammer outside the Roadhouse.

He stood beside his Harley, staring at it.

The same motorcycle Noah had drawn on.

“You okay?””

He didn’t turn.

“No.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I spent twenty-two years thinking my brother abandoned me.””

His hand rested on the bike.

“I hated him.””

I stayed quiet.

“Every year on his birthday, I came here.””

He looked at the motorcycle.

“I would sit on this bike and tell myself I didn’t care.””

A bitter laugh escaped.

“But I always came.””

I understood then.

People could carry anger and love at the same time.

Sometimes they carried both until it broke them.

“He loved you,” I said.

Hammer nodded.

“I know.””

The answer was simple.

Painfully simple.

Then a motorcycle engine roared.

Not one of the Iron Haven Riders.

A stranger.

Hammer immediately changed.

The sadness disappeared.

The leader returned.

A black truck pulled into the parking lot.

Three men stepped out.

They weren’t bikers.

They wore expensive clothes.

The kind of people who looked more dangerous because they didn’t need leather and tattoos to prove anything.

Hammer moved in front of me.

“Get Noah inside.””

I grabbed my son’s hand.

But before we reached the door, one of the men spoke.

“Jackson Reed.””

Hammer stopped.

Nobody called him Jackson.

Not anymore.

“Who are you?””

The man smiled.

“You know exactly who we are.””

Hammer’s jaw tightened.

Lily stepped out behind him.

The stranger’s smile disappeared.

“Well.””

He looked at her.

“Looks like the ghost finally brought someone home.””

Hammer’s voice became cold.

“You followed her.””

“No.””

The man looked at Noah.

“We followed him.””

My blood turned cold.

“What?””

The man smiled slightly.

“The boy.””

Hammer moved forward.

“You stay away from him.””

The stranger ignored him.

“Do you know what your son saw, ma’am?””

I stepped back.

“He’s not my son.””

The words came out automatically.

“He’s my child.””

The man smiled.

“Either way, he knows something he shouldn’t.””

Hammer’s fist tightened.

“Leave.””

The man laughed softly.

“You really think you’re still in control?””

Then he looked at Lily.

“Your father made things complicated.””

Lily went pale.

“You know where he is?””

The man didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

That was answer enough.

Hammer moved faster than I expected.

One second he was standing beside me.

The next he had the man against the truck.

“You tell me where my brother is.””

The stranger didn’t look afraid.

“He’s not the same man you remember.””

Hammer froze.

“What does that mean?””

“It means your brother spent twenty-two years making sure nobody found him.””

The man smiled.

“And now you’re going to lead us right to him.””

Hammer released him.

Only slightly.

“What do you want?””

“Something Ethan took.””

“The evidence.””

The man smiled.

“So you do know.””

The air changed.

Hammer understood.

This wasn’t about revenge.

This was bigger.

The stranger stepped back.

“You have forty-eight hours.””

“Or what?””

The man looked at Noah.

“Or the people who protected Ethan all these years won’t be able to protect him anymore.””

Then he left.

Just like that.

No threats.

No shouting.

Only a promise.

A promise that scared me more than anything.

That night, Hammer gathered the Iron Haven Riders.

The mission was simple.

Find Ethan.

Protect Noah.

Discover the truth.

But before we left, something happened.

Something none of us expected.

Noah woke up.

He walked downstairs holding his blanket.

“Mom.””

I turned.

“What is it?””

He looked toward the front door.

“He’s here.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Noah whispered:

“Ethan.””

Everyone became still.

Hammer stepped forward.

“Where?””

Noah pointed.

Outside.

The porch light flickered.

A shadow stood near the road.

An old man.

Wearing a worn jacket.

Leaning slightly.

Watching the house.

Hammer walked outside.

The man stepped into the light.

For twenty-two years, Hammer had imagined this moment.

But nothing prepared him for reality.

Because standing in front of him was a man with gray hair and tired eyes.

A man older than the brother he remembered.

A man carrying two decades of secrets.

Hammer whispered:

“Ethan?””

The man looked at him.

And smiled sadly.

“I’m sorry, little brother.””

Hammer couldn’t move.

Couldn’t breathe.

Then Ethan Reed said the words that shattered everything.

“I came back because they found my daughter.””

His eyes moved toward Lily.

May you like

Then Noah.

“And because the boy already knows what happens next.””
