Chapter 7: The Night the Iron Haven Riders Went to War
The headlights kept coming.
One after another.
A long line of vehicles moving down the dark road like a warning.
Nobody in the yard spoke.
The Iron Haven Riders stood beside their motorcycles, silent and ready.
I had seen these men laugh.
I had seen them joke.
I had seen them act like a family.
But I had never seen them like this.
Ready.
Focused.
Dangerous.
Hammer stepped forward.
For the first time since I met him, he didn’t look like a man carrying old pain.
He looked like the legend everyone in town whispered about.
“The boy goes inside,” he said.
I grabbed Noah’s hand.
“Noah stays with me.””
Hammer looked at me.
“You trust me?””
The question surprised me.
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“Then trust me with this.””
He looked at Lily.
“Take them inside.””
Lily hesitated.
“I’m not leaving.””
Hammer looked at her.
“You’re Ethan’s daughter.””
She nodded.
“And?””
“And that means you’re family.””
Something changed in her expression.
For years, she had probably lived without anyone claiming her.
Now she had a family.
A brother.
A father.
A group of strangers willing to protect her.
She stepped back.
But before she entered the house, Noah looked at Ethan.
“Are they the bad people?””
Ethan’s face became serious.
“Yes.””
Noah looked scared.
Not because of the answer.
Because Ethan had confirmed what he already knew.
“Are they going to hurt you?””
Ethan looked at him.
“Not if we stop them.””
Noah nodded.
Then he did something unexpected.
He reached into his pocket.
And pulled out the piece of chalk.
The same chalk he had used on the Harley.
Hammer almost smiled.
“What are you doing with that?””
Noah looked at the motorcycles.
“Making sure everyone gets home.””
Nobody laughed.
Nobody questioned him.
Because after everything that happened, nobody underestimated Noah anymore.
The first vehicle stopped at the edge of the property.
A black SUV.
Three men stepped out.
The same man from earlier walked in front.
His name was Victor Hale.
Ethan’s expression changed when he saw him.
“You.””
Victor smiled.
“Hello, Ethan.””
Hammer moved beside his brother.
“You know him.””
Ethan nodded.
“He’s the one who chased us.””
Victor adjusted his coat.
“Chased?””
He laughed.
“That makes us sound cruel.””
Hammer stared at him.
“You threatened a child.””
Victor’s smile faded.
“The child is the reason we’re here.””
I stepped forward.
“Stay away from my son.””
Victor looked at me.
“I don’t want your son.””
“Then what do you want?””
He looked toward Ethan.
“What he stole.””
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“You mean what I saved.””
Victor shrugged.
“Call it whatever makes you sleep at night.””
Hammer walked closer.
“You’re leaving.””
Victor looked around.
“At least thirty riders.””
His eyes moved over the group.
“Impressive.””
Then he smiled.
“But numbers don’t matter when you’re protecting something you don’t understand.””
Hammer’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Victor looked at Noah.
“It means the boy has already seen too much.””
A cold wave moved through me.
Hammer stepped forward.
“Last warning.””
Victor didn’t move.
Instead, he reached into his pocket.
Not a weapon.
A phone.
He pressed a button.
A video began playing.
Ethan froze.
Because the screen showed a younger version of him.
Twenty-two years ago.
Standing in a room.
Talking to someone.
Hammer looked confused.
“What is that?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Victor smiled.
“The truth.””
The video played.
Young Ethan looked exhausted.
Terrified.
But determined.
“I have copies,” the younger Ethan said.
A voice behind the camera responded.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
Ethan replied:
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
The video stopped.
Victor looked at Hammer.
“Your brother wasn’t hiding because he was protecting his daughter.””
Hammer turned slowly toward Ethan.
“Then why?””
Ethan looked away.
The pain returned.
“Because I made a mistake.””
The words shocked everyone.
Victor smiled.
“Tell him.””
Ethan didn’t respond.
“Tell your brother what you really did.””
Hammer looked at him.
“What is he talking about?””
The silence lasted too long.
That was the answer.
“You were involved?”” Hammer asked.
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Not the way you think.””
“Then explain.””
Ethan looked at him.
“Before Lily’s mother found the evidence, I worked for them.””
Nobody moved.
Hammer stared.
“You worked for them?””
“Yes.””
The disappointment on Hammer’s face was worse than anger.
“I thought you were the one fighting them.””
“I became the one who helped them.””
The words fell like stones.
Victor smiled.
“There it is.””
I looked at Ethan.
“Why?””
Ethan looked at Lily.
“Because I didn’t know what they were doing.””
He swallowed.
“I thought I was protecting people.””
Hammer’s voice was low.
“And when you found out?””
“I tried to fix it.””
Victor laughed.
“You tried to play hero.””
Ethan ignored him.
“I took the evidence.””
“And disappeared.””
“Yes.””
Hammer looked away.
Twenty-two years of believing one story.
Now everything was changing.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
The answer came immediately.
Ethan nodded.
“I know.””
Then Hammer looked at Victor.
“And you came here because?””
Victor smiled.
“Because the evidence is not just about us.””
He looked at Hammer.
“It’s about you too.””
The entire yard became silent.
“What?””
Victor stepped closer.
“Your brother wasn’t the only one who made mistakes.””
Hammer’s face changed.
“What are you saying?””
Victor smiled.
“Ask him about the night Ethan disappeared.””
Everyone looked at Ethan.
May you like
And for the first time…
Ethan looked afraid.
