Chapter 8: The Woman Emily Trusted

The next morning, I asked Vanessa to tell me everything.

No more secrets.

No more missing pieces.

She agreed.

“I met Emily three years before she died,” Vanessa explained.

I listened silently.

“She volunteered at the hospital where my sister was receiving treatment. Emily was the kind of person who made strangers feel like family.””

That sounded exactly like her.

“She knew my marriage had ended. She knew I couldn’t have children. And somehow, she still worried more about my loneliness than her own pain.””

Vanessa looked at the bracelet.

“She gave me this because she wanted Sophie to have someone who understood what losing a mother felt like.””

I frowned.

“You lost your mother too?””

Vanessa nodded.

“When I was young.””

For the first time, I saw Vanessa differently.

Not as someone who replaced Emily.

But as someone Emily had chosen.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Emily asked me not to.””

I looked at her.

“She thought you would reject me.””

“Why?””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“Because you were still in love with a memory.””

Her words were painful.

But they were true.

I had spent years comparing Vanessa to Emily.

Every meal.

Every holiday.

Every family moment.

I wanted Vanessa to be Emily.

But Emily never wanted that.

She wanted Sophie to have another person who loved her.

Not another version of herself.

That night, I apologized.

Not because Vanessa had been perfect.

May you like

She wasn’t.

But because I finally understood how much she had carried alone.
