Chapter 4: The Secret Emily Left Behind

I stared at Vanessa as if I was looking at a stranger.

“Protect Sophie from me?””

The words felt like a betrayal.

After everything I had sacrificed. After every night I stayed awake beside my dying daughter because she missed her mother. After every birthday when I tried to make Emily feel alive through memories.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No,” I said.

“You’ve been hiding this for years.””

She looked down at the photograph.

“Emily knew something about you that you refused to see.””

My jaw tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa walked toward the table and picked up one of the letters.

“After Sophie was born, Emily started noticing how obsessed you became with protecting her. At first, she thought it was love.””

I grabbed the letter from her hand.

“She was my daughter.””

“Yes,” Vanessa whispered.

“But Emily was afraid you would lose yourself trying to control every part of Sophie’s life.””

I opened the letter.

Emily’s handwriting stared back at me.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, something happened that made you question everything. I need you to understand one thing.

Loving Sophie does not mean holding onto her forever.

My hands trembled.

I looked at Vanessa.

“She wrote this?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She wrote many things. She knew she didn’t have much time.””

I felt my anger weakening.

But confusion replaced it.

“Why did you have her bracelet?””

May you like

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because Emily gave it to me before she died.””
