Chapter 3: The Box in the Closet
That night, after Sophie fell asleep, I sat alone in the living room.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
For ten years, I had convinced myself that Vanessa entering our lives was a blessing.
She helped me rebuild after Emily died.
She was there when Sophie had nightmares.
She held my hand when grief became too heavy.
I wanted to believe she loved us.
I needed to believe it.
But now every memory felt different.
Every smile.
Every kind word.
Every moment she told Sophie she understood how much her mother meant to her.
Was it all real?
Or was Vanessa playing a role?
I waited until midnight before walking upstairs.
I wasn’t proud of what I did next.
I opened Vanessa’s closet.
Not because I wanted to invade her privacy.
Because something inside me knew the truth was hiding there.
Behind a row of old coats, I found a small wooden box.
My heart started pounding.
I pulled it out slowly.
The box was locked.
But taped underneath was a small key.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Letters.
Documents.
And one picture that made my entire body go cold.
It was Emily.
Standing beside Vanessa.
Years before I ever met my second wife.
I stared at the photo, unable to breathe.
On the back was a handwritten message.
A message written by Emily.
“Vanessa, I’m trusting you with the most important thing in my life. Please keep my daughter safe.””
I dropped the photograph.
Vanessa wasn’t a stranger to Emily.
She knew my first wife.
She had known her before cancer took her.
A floorboard creaked behind me.
I turned around.
Vanessa was standing in the doorway.
Her eyes were full of tears.
“You finally found it,” she whispered.
I couldn’t move.
“Found what?””
She looked at the picture in my hand.
“The truth.””
And then she said the words that changed everything.
“Daniel, Emily didn’t ask me to protect Sophie after she died.””
May you like
She took a slow breath.
“She asked me to protect Sophie from you.””
