Chapter 1: The Bracelet at the Table
The sound of my ten-year-old daughter’s scream cut through our Sunday dinner like a knife.
One second, Sophie was quietly eating mashed potatoes beside me. The next, her fork slipped from her fingers and crashed onto the porcelain plate.
Everyone at the table froze.
My wife, Vanessa, didn’t even look surprised.
She simply glanced down at the gold bracelet wrapped around her wrist, then calmly continued cutting her steak.
“Lower your voice, young lady,” Vanessa said.
Sophie pushed her chair back so quickly it scraped against the wooden floor.
“Daddy,” she whispered, tears already filling her eyes.
“That’s Mommy’s bracelet.””
My chest tightened.
I looked at Vanessa’s wrist.
And there it was.
The tiny heart-shaped charm.
The small scratch near the clasp.
The bracelet I hadn’t seen in years, but one I could recognize anywhere.
Emily’s bracelet.
My first wife had worn it every single day during our marriage. She wore it when we went on our first date. She wore it when we bought our first house. She wore it the night we found out we were going to have Sophie.
And she wore it through the hardest fight of her life.
Cancer took Emily when Sophie was only five years old.
Before she passed away, Emily gave me a small velvet box.
“Daniel,” she whispered, barely able to keep her eyes open, “when Sophie is old enough, give this to her. Tell her her mother carried all her love in this little piece of gold.””
I kept that promise.
Three weeks earlier, on Sophie’s tenth birthday, I handed her the velvet box.
She cried when she opened it.
Not because it was expensive.
Because it was the last thing her mother had touched.
But now that bracelet was on Vanessa’s wrist.
And Sophie knew.
“Where did you get that?”” I asked.
Vanessa finally looked at me.
For the first time all evening, her calm expression cracked.
“It was a gift,” she answered.
“From who?””
The silence that followed felt heavier than any answer.
Sophie looked between us.
“Daddy… why does she have Mom’s bracelet?””
I didn’t know what hurt more.
May you like
The fact that Vanessa was wearing it.
Or the fact that she looked like she had been waiting for this moment.
