Chapter 7: The Truth About Claire’s Final Days
Marcus stared at Vanessa’s message for almost ten minutes.
The photograph attached was old.
Very old.
Claire was standing in the backyard of their first home.
She was smiling.
The kind of smile Marcus remembered perfectly.
A smile that made every difficult day feel temporary.
But Vanessa’s words underneath it changed everything.
You don’t know what happened before she died.
Marcus hated that the sentence worked.
He hated that a part of him wanted to know.
Because grief had a strange way of protecting memories.
For four years, Marcus had held onto the version of Claire that gave him comfort.
The loving wife.
The devoted mother.
The woman who always knew what to say.
But what if there were things he never knew?
What if the last months of her life contained conversations he never heard?
What if Vanessa was right?
Marcus immediately hated himself for thinking it.
Because this was exactly what Vanessa wanted.
Doubt.
Confusion.
A new story.
But the truth mattered.
Especially when Claire was involved.
He replied.
Where?
The answer came quickly.
A coffee shop near the old neighborhood. One hour.
Marcus almost refused.
Then he looked upstairs.
At Nia.
At the daughter who had spent years believing she had to earn her place in her own family.
He needed the truth.
An hour later, Marcus sat across from Vanessa.
She looked exhausted.
Not like the confident woman who had controlled every room before.
This Vanessa looked fragile.
But Marcus knew better than to confuse vulnerability with innocence.
“Why did you want to meet?”” he asked.
Vanessa looked down at her coffee.
“Because you deserve to know.””
“About Claire?””
She nodded.
Marcus waited.
For once, he let the silence pressure her.
“She hated me.””
Marcus frowned.
“That’s not true.””
“You weren’t there.””
“I was her husband.””
“And I was the woman everyone thought was replacing her.””
Marcus said nothing.
Vanessa looked out the window.
“When Claire was sick, everyone treated her like she was made of glass.””
“She was dying.””
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“I knew that.””
She took a breath.
“But do you know what it feels like to enter someone’s life when everyone is still mourning the person before you?””
Marcus looked at her.
“That doesn’t excuse what happened.””
“I know.””
The answer surprised him.
Vanessa looked down.
“I’m not trying to excuse it.””
“Then what are you doing?””
“Explaining.””
Marcus leaned back.
“Explain.””
Vanessa folded her hands.
“Claire asked me to help.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
“She asked me to be there for Nia.””
The words felt impossible.
“Why would she ask you?””
“Because she knew she didn’t have much time.””
Marcus looked away.
That part sounded like Claire.
She would have planned.
She would have tried to protect Nia.
“She told me something,” Vanessa continued.
“What?””
“She said Nia needed a woman in her life.””
Marcus felt a small flicker of confusion.
“So you’re saying Claire trusted you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you hurt Nia?””
Vanessa looked down.
And for a moment, she had no answer.
Finally, she whispered:
“Because I failed.””
Marcus studied her.
“You failed?””
“Yes.””
The honesty caught him off guard.
Vanessa continued.
“I thought loving Nia meant making her move on.””
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“I thought if she stopped holding onto Claire, she would accept me.””
Marcus felt anger rising.
“You tried to erase her mother.””
“I know.””
“You removed Claire’s things.””
“I know.””
“You made her feel unwanted.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I know.””
For the first time, Marcus saw something he had not expected.
Regret.
Real regret.
But then Vanessa reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this.””
Marcus looked at it.
“What is it?””
“A letter.””
“From Claire?””
Vanessa nodded.
Marcus did not take it immediately.
“Why do you have it?””
“Because Claire gave it to me.””
His expression hardened.
“And you never showed me?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Because I was ashamed.””
Marcus finally took the letter.
The handwriting was Claire’s.
His hands shook.
He opened it.
Vanessa,
I know this is not easy for you.
I know you feel like you are entering a life that already existed.
But I need you to understand something.
Nia is not a memory of me.
She is not a reminder that I was here first.
She is a child who has already lost enough.
Please don’t make her lose another person because you are afraid you cannot replace me.
Marcus stopped.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You read this.””
“Yes.””
“And still…”
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“I was jealous.””
The admission was quiet.
Painfully honest.
“I hated that Nia had a part of Marcus I could never reach.””
Marcus stared.
“She was his daughter.””
“I know.””
“No.””
His voice hardened.
“You don’t.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“She wasn’t competition.””
“I know that now.””
Marcus looked at the letter again.
“Now?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Yes.””
The silence stretched.
Then Marcus asked:
“What happened after Claire died?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“There was one thing.””
“What?””
“Claire asked me to promise something.””
Marcus waited.
“She asked me to tell you something if she never got the chance.””
“What?””
Vanessa’s hands shook.
“She said you would blame yourself.””
Marcus looked away.
Because he already did.
“She said you would think working harder could fix losing her.””
A tear escaped before he could stop it.
“She knew me.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“She loved you.””
Marcus folded the letter.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I wanted you to choose me.””
The answer was devastating.
Not because it was cruel.
Because it was human.
And that made everything harder.
Marcus stood.
“I appreciate you telling me the truth.””
Vanessa looked hopeful.
“But?””
“But Nia still deserves accountability.””
Her expression fell.
“I know.””
Marcus walked away.
But as he drove home, he realized something.
Vanessa’s actions came from insecurity.
From jealousy.
From fear.
But none of those things changed what Nia experienced.
And there was still one question Marcus could not ignore.
Why had Vanessa hidden the school reports?
Why had she lied?
Why had she continued even after knowing Claire’s final wish?
The answer would come sooner than he expected.
Because that night, Marcus received another message.
Not from Vanessa.
From the school counselor.
Attached was a file.
A file containing a report Marcus had never seen.
May you like
A report written months before.
A report Vanessa had signed.
