Chapter 6: The Message Hidden Before Goodbye
Three days later, Vanessa moved out.
At least temporarily.
Marcus thought the distance would bring peace.
Instead, it brought more questions.
Because Vanessa did not leave angry.
She left prepared.
She packed calmly.
She apologized to Caleb and Ava.
She cried in front of them.
And she made sure everyone saw her pain.
Marcus noticed.
He knew Vanessa was intelligent.
She understood people.
She understood emotions.
And that frightened him.
Because someone who knew how to control a story could easily change how others saw the truth.
That evening, Caleb approached him.
“Dad?””
Marcus looked up.
“Yeah?””
“Is Mom a bad person?””
The question broke his heart.
Because children should never have to choose sides.
“No.””
Caleb looked confused.
“She hurt Nia.””
“Yes.””
“Then why isn’t she bad?””
Marcus thought carefully.
“Because people can do wrong things and still be complicated.””
Caleb looked down.
“Does Nia hate her?””
Marcus looked toward the stairs.
“No.””
That surprised Caleb.
“Why?””
“Because Nia has a bigger heart than most people.””
Upstairs, Nia was organizing her room.
Marcus had started restoring the things Vanessa removed.
Old pictures.
Old decorations.
Memories.
He wanted Nia to know she did not have to erase part of herself to belong.
While moving a box from the closet, Marcus found something.
A small voice recorder.
He frowned.
He had never seen it before.
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Claire’s voice appeared.
Marcus froze.
“Nia, if you’re listening to this someday…”
His breath stopped.
It was Claire.
Older.
Weaker.
But still Claire.
Marcus sat down.
“I don’t know when you’ll hear this. Maybe when you’re older. Maybe when you need to understand something.””
A pause.
“You have always worried about being too much.””
Marcus covered his mouth.
Because Claire knew.
She knew her daughter.
“You are not too much, sweetheart. You are exactly enough.””
Tears filled Marcus’s eyes.
Then Claire continued.
“There is something I need your father to understand.””
Marcus leaned closer.
“Love is not something you divide. When you love someone new, it does not mean you love someone from the past less.””
He looked toward the door.
Nia was standing there.
She had heard.
Neither of them moved.
Claire’s voice continued.
“Marcus, if Vanessa becomes part of your life, I hope she loves Nia. Not because she has to. Not because she is replacing me. But because Nia deserves love from everyone.””
Marcus looked at Nia.
Her eyes were filled with tears.
Then Claire said something that made both of them freeze.
“But if anyone ever tries to make Nia feel like she doesn’t belong…”
A pause.
“Please believe her.””
The recording ended.
The room stayed silent.
Finally, Nia whispered:
“She knew.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“She knew someone might hurt me.””
Marcus looked at the recorder.
“Yes.””
That night, Marcus made another discovery.
The recorder had been hidden inside a box of Claire’s belongings.
A box Vanessa had access to.
A box Vanessa had hidden.
And suddenly Marcus wondered.
Had Vanessa known about the recording?
Had she heard Claire’s final message?
Had she ignored it?
The next morning, Marcus received a message.
From Vanessa.
Three words.
We need to talk.
He almost ignored it.
Almost.
Then another message arrived.
A photograph.
Not of dinner.
Not of Nia.
Of Claire.
And underneath it was a sentence.
You don’t know what happened before she died.
Marcus stared at the screen.
Because once again, Vanessa was holding a secret.
And this time, the secret involved the woman he had loved.
May you like
The woman who was gone.
And the truth that could change everything he believed about the last days of her life.
