Chapter 14: The Person Who Started It All
Vanessa sat across from Marcus in silence.
For several minutes, neither of them spoke.
The house felt different.
Not like a home.
Like a courtroom.
Every person had evidence.
Every person had secrets.
Every person had something to lose.
Finally, Vanessa spoke.
“I didn’t know how much Claire had found.””
Marcus watched her carefully.
“What did you know?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I knew Edward was hiding things.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I was scared.””
Marcus almost laughed.
But he stopped.
Because this time, he wanted the truth.
Not excuses.
“Tell me everything.””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“When I met you, I knew about your family.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
“Not everything.””
She shook her head.
“But enough.””
“How?””
“My father worked with Edward years ago.””
Marcus froze.
Another connection.
Another hidden piece.
“My father lost everything because of him.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Edward blamed him for mistakes he didn’t make.””
The room became quiet.
“Your father destroyed my family.””
Marcus looked away.
For the first time, he understood something.
Vanessa’s anger toward Nia had never only been about Claire.
It had been about everything she connected to the Bennett name.
“You married me because of that?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“I loved you.””
Marcus believed she meant it.
But that made it more complicated.
“I loved you,” Vanessa continued.
“But I also hated what your name represented.””
Marcus looked at her.
“And Nia?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I saw her as part of that world.””
Marcus shook his head.
“She was a child.””
“I know.””
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
Vanessa started crying.
“Because I was angry.””
Marcus sat quietly.
“I was angry at your father. At your family. At Claire because everyone loved her. At myself because I couldn’t let go.””
She wiped her face.
“And Nia was the easiest person to blame.””
The honesty was painful.
But necessary.
Marcus looked at her.
“Did Claire know about your father?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before she died.””
Marcus frowned.
“Then why would she trust you?””
Vanessa looked surprised.
“Because Claire was not like us.””
“What does that mean?””
“She saw pain and wanted to heal it.””
Marcus looked down.
“That was her.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She knew my father was hurt. She knew your father was wrong. She believed people could make better choices.””
Marcus looked at the papers.
“And you?””
Vanessa whispered:
“I didn’t.””
Silence.
Then Marcus asked the question that had been haunting him.
“Did you have anything to do with Claire’s death?””
Vanessa looked up.
The pain on her face was immediate.
“No.””
Marcus watched her.
“I swear.””
He believed her.
Not because he trusted her completely.
But because he saw something in her eyes.
A person carrying guilt.
But not that kind of guilt.
“Then what happened?””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“The night Claire died, she called me.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
“She was upset.””
“Why?””
“She found another document.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“What document?””
“A record connected to Edward.””
“And?””
“She said someone was trying to stop her.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“She never told me.””
“Then why did you hide everything?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because after Claire died, I found the documents.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
“In her room.””
“You took them?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought if I revealed them, everything would fall apart.””
Marcus stared.
“You chose silence.””
“Yes.””
“And Nia suffered.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
There was no defense.
No excuse.
Just the truth.
The next morning, Marcus made one final decision.
He called the police.
Not because he wanted revenge.
Because secrets had protected powerful people for too long.
The investigation began.
Old records were reviewed.
Financial information was examined.
And within weeks, a shocking discovery emerged.
The person who had been moving money.
The person who had manipulated records.
The person who had benefited from Edward’s mistakes.
Was not Edward.
Not Vanessa.
Not Thomas.
It was someone Marcus never expected.
His own uncle.
Richard Bennett.
Edward’s younger brother.
The man who had always been described as the loyal family member.
The man who had comforted Marcus after his father died.
The man who had helped manage the company.
Marcus stared at the evidence.
Everything changed.
Richard had used Edward’s reputation.
Used Thomas’s loyalty.
Used Vanessa’s anger.
Used everyone’s weaknesses.
And Claire had gotten too close.
But there was one final piece.
A recording.
A recording Claire had hidden.
A recording that proved everything.
And when Marcus heard it, he finally understood why Claire had spent her final days trying to protect Nia.

Because she knew the truth was coming.
And she knew the person behind it all would stop at nothing.
