Chapter 12: The Secret Claire Took to Her Grave
Marcus spent the night thinking about his father.
Edward Bennett.
A man who had always been respected.
Successful.
Powerful.
A man Marcus had admired his entire life.
The idea that Claire had been investigating him felt impossible.
But after everything he had discovered, Marcus knew better than to dismiss anything.
The next morning, he called Vanessa.
“I need details.””
She answered quietly.
“I knew you would ask.””
“What did Claire find?””
“I don’t know everything.””
“Then tell me what you know.””
Vanessa took a breath.
“Claire found financial records.””
Marcus frowned.
“About my father?””
“Yes.””
“What kind of records?””
“Payments.””
“To who?””
“I don’t know.””
Marcus felt frustrated.
“Vanessa, you’re telling me my dead father was involved in something, but you don’t know what?””
“I know Claire was scared.””
That stopped him.
“Scared?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“A few months before she died.””
Marcus sat down.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
Vanessa’s answer was quiet.
“Because she didn’t want to hurt you.””
The same answer everyone gave.
Everyone had been protecting him.
And somehow, everyone had made decisions for him.
Marcus hated that.
“What did she do with the records?””
Vanessa paused.
“She hid them.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
Marcus thought about it.
Then remembered something.
The safety deposit box.
The letter.
The recorder.
But nothing about financial records.
Unless…
He returned to the bank.
The manager recognized him.
“You found everything?””
Marcus shook his head.
“I think there was something missing.””
The manager checked the records.
After several minutes, he looked up.
“There was another item.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“What?””
“A second envelope.””
His heart raced.
“Where is it?””
The manager frowned.
“It was removed four years ago.””
Marcus froze.
“By who?””
The manager checked the signature.
Then looked at him.
“Vanessa Bennett.””
Marcus felt betrayed.
Again.
He left the bank and went straight to Vanessa.
She opened the door and immediately knew.
“You found out.””
Marcus stared.
“You took something from Claire’s box.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
“What was it?””
“A file.””
“Why?””
“Because Claire asked me to.””
Marcus stopped.
“What?””
“She told me if anything happened, I needed to keep it safe.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Of what you would discover.””
Marcus’s voice lowered.
“About my father?””
She nodded.
The world seemed to shift.
“What did Claire find?””
Vanessa walked away.
Then returned with a folder.
She handed it to him.
Inside were documents.
Old business records.
Names.
Dates.
Transactions.
Marcus read slowly.
Then his face changed.
Because one name appeared repeatedly.
Edward Bennett.
His father.
And another name.
Thomas Reed.
Marcus looked up.
“Thomas?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He knew.””
Marcus continued reading.
The records showed money transfers.
Large amounts.
Payments made years earlier.
But the purpose was unclear.
Then he found a handwritten note from Claire.
Marcus,
I don’t know what this means yet.
But I know Edward and Thomas were hiding something.
I need time.
I need answers.
But if I cannot find them, I need you to know:
Protect Nia.
Protect the children.
Trust actions, not words.
Marcus lowered the paper.
Even in the middle of her own fear, Claire had been thinking about Nia.
Always Nia.
Vanessa sat down.
“I should have given you that years ago.””
“Yes.””
“I was afraid.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“I know.””
“And everyone keeps using fear as a reason.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I know.””
Marcus looked at the documents again.
Now the family mystery was bigger than he imagined.
Vanessa’s treatment of Nia.
Claire’s warnings.
His father’s secrets.
Thomas’s involvement.
Everything was connected.
That evening, Marcus called Thomas.
Thomas answered.
“You found it.””
Marcus froze.
“You knew?””
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
Marcus’s anger returned.
“How long?””
“Since Claire showed me.””
“You knew about my father?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
Thomas sounded tired.
“Marcus, you don’t understand.””
“No.””
His voice hardened.
“I don’t.””
Thomas sighed.
“Your father wasn’t the man you thought he was.””
Marcus looked at the papers.
“Then tell me who he was.””
A long pause.
Then Thomas said:
“Someone who destroyed lives to protect his reputation.””
Marcus felt cold.
“What lives?””
Thomas whispered:
“Your mother’s.””
Marcus stopped.
His mother.
Another secret.
Another person connected.
Another truth waiting.
And Marcus realized something terrifying.
His entire life had been built on stories people told him.
Stories designed to protect him.
But now those stories were falling apart.
And at the center of all of it was one question:
How much had Claire discovered before she died?
May you like
And why had she chosen to leave the truth hidden instead of telling him?
Because the answer might reveal the greatest betrayal his family had ever faced.
