Chapter 9: The Recording That Named Everyone
Officer Brooks rushed down the corridor.
"Stay where you are!""
Daniel immediately reached for Mateo.
"Son, are you hurt?""
Mateo shook his head.
"I'm okay.""
I looked toward the records room.
The red indicator continued blinking.
The telephone kept ringing.
Walter Price found a flashlight and pointed it toward the metal door.
"That's not supposed to be working.""
Principal Collins approached carefully.
"Can you open it?""
Walter shook his head.
"Not with the keys I brought.""
Officer Brooks examined the lock.
"Richard must have used another key.""
Daniel stared at the door.
"Or he never intended to leave it locked.""
He pointed toward a small control panel.
"That's an electronic release.""
Officer Brooks examined the wiring.
"Can you operate it?""
Daniel nodded.
"I used to work with these systems.""
He leaned closer.
"Give me the flashlight.""
Officer Brooks handed it over.
Daniel examined the panel, then pressed a small recessed button.
Nothing happened.
He tried again.
A green light appeared.
The lock clicked.
The metal door opened several inches.
A cold draft escaped from the room.
Officer Brooks pushed it open.
Inside was a narrow records chamber lined with filing cabinets.
Several boxes were scattered across the floor.
A desk stood against the far wall.
And on that desk was an old telephone.
It was still ringing.
Principal Collins walked toward it.
"Don't answer that," Daniel warned.
She stopped.
"Why?""
"Because this room was sealed years ago. That phone shouldn't be connected to anything.""
Officer Brooks examined the cable.
"It isn't connected to the school network.""
He lifted the receiver carefully.
"Hello?""
Silence.
Then a man's voice spoke.
"You're late.""
Officer Brooks stiffened.
"Who is this?""
"Tell Daniel I found the original.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Thomas?""
The voice changed.
"Daniel, listen carefully. You have very little time.""
"Where are you?""
"Not here.""
"Who was in the room?""
A pause.
Then Thomas answered.
"Richard.""
Daniel clenched his jaw.
"Where did he go?""
"I don't know. But he took the blue ledger.""
Principal Collins looked around.
"What blue ledger?""
Daniel opened one of the cabinets.
Several old folders were missing.
"These records contain the original assistance approvals.""
Thomas continued.
"There's another copy. Behind the bottom drawer.""
Daniel crouched.
He pulled open the lowest drawer of the filing cabinet.
It was empty.
Then he noticed a small metal plate at the back.
He pressed it.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a thick blue ledger wrapped in plastic.
Daniel carefully removed it.
Principal Collins stared.
"Is this the original?""
Thomas answered through the telephone.
"Yes.""
Daniel opened the first page.
Rows of student names filled the paper.
Beside each name were dates, approval numbers, and handwritten notes.
Some entries had red marks.
Others had been crossed out.
Officer Brooks leaned closer.
"What are we looking at?""
Daniel turned several pages.
"Every student whose assistance was suspended after a complaint.""
Principal Collins read the first name.
Then the second.
Her expression became increasingly troubled.
"These are children from our district.""
Daniel nodded.
"And these are the people who approved the cancellations.""
He pointed to a column.
Patricia Vance.
Richard Hale.
Eleanor Whitmore.
All three names appeared repeatedly.
Mateo looked at the ledger.
"Why is Mrs. Whitmore in here?""
Daniel turned another page.
The entry beside her name contained a notation.
*CLASSROOM REPORTS — FLAGGED STUDENTS.*
Below it were several student names.
Mateo's name was among them.
My stomach tightened.
"Why is Mateo listed?""
Daniel examined the notes.
Then he looked at his son.
"Because someone marked you as a student whose family was creating administrative difficulties.""
Mateo shook his head.
"But I didn't do anything.""
"I know, son.""
Principal Collins turned another page.
A handwritten instruction appeared in the margin.
*REPEATED DISCIPLINARY INCIDENTS REQUIRED BEFORE ASSISTANCE REVIEW.*
Officer Brooks stared at it.
"They were building a record against the children.""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Exactly.""
He looked at the telephone.
"Thomas, do you have the original audio?""
"Yes.""
"Where?""
"On a separate recorder. I hid it before they came.""
Daniel gripped the receiver.
"Who is on it?""
Thomas took a breath.
"Richard, Patricia, and the former superintendent.""
Principal Collins stepped closer.
"The former superintendent?""
"Yes.""
Daniel's voice became urgent.
"What are they discussing?""
Thomas answered:
"Payments. False disciplinary reports. And the families who were supposed to lose their assistance.""
Officer Brooks immediately reached for his phone.
"We need to get that recording.""
Thomas continued.
"There's one more thing.""
Daniel waited.
"Patricia didn't create this operation.""
Daniel looked toward the principal.
"Who did?""
Thomas lowered his voice.
"Richard was following orders.""
"Whose orders?""
The telephone crackled.
Then Thomas said a name.
"Margaret Collins.""
Everyone froze.
Principal Collins stared at the phone.
"What?""
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
Thomas continued.
"She signed the original authorization forms.""
Officer Brooks stepped between them.
"Thomas, explain what you're saying.""
"Margaret was the compliance officer when the program began. She approved the first student reviews.""
Principal Collins shook her head.
"That's not true.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Margaret?""
She stepped backward.
"I was never involved in those cancellations.""
Thomas' voice became weaker.
"Check the signatures.""
Officer Brooks opened the ledger.
He turned to the first authorization page.
At the bottom was a signature.
*MARGARET COLLINS.*
Principal Collins stared at it.
Then she whispered:
"That's my signature.""
Mateo looked confused.
"Principal Collins?""
She reached for the desk.
"I don't understand.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Did you sign this?""
"I signed hundreds of documents when I worked in compliance. But I never approved anything like this.""
Thomas interrupted.
"Margaret, you were told those files were routine eligibility reviews.""
She closed her eyes.
"I was told the families had failed verification.""
"And you signed without checking.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I trusted the department.""
Daniel looked down at the ledger.
"That doesn't explain why you investigated complaints against the same people you approved.""
Principal Collins covered her mouth.
Thomas spoke again.
"There's something else in the recording.""
"What?""
"The former superintendent explains why your signature was used.""
Principal Collins stared at the phone.
"Why?""
"Because you were supposed to become principal. They needed someone who could take the blame if the program was ever exposed.""
The room went silent.
Daniel slowly closed the ledger.
"You're telling us she was being positioned as the scapegoat?""
Thomas answered:
"Yes.""
Principal Collins sank into a chair.
"I had no idea.""
Officer Brooks looked at her.
"Then we'll need to verify every document.""
Before anyone could respond, the telephone emitted a sharp buzzing sound.
Thomas' voice returned, urgent and frightened.
"Daniel, someone is coming.""
"Who?""
"I don't know. I heard the door.""
"Where are you?""
Thomas whispered something that made Daniel's face change.
"I'm outside the school.""
Daniel turned toward the corridor.
"Then come inside.""
"I can't.""
"Why?""
Thomas took a shaky breath.
"Because Patricia is standing beside my car.""
Daniel looked at Officer Brooks.
"Call the police.""
Then Thomas said the words that made everyone freeze.
"She's not alone. Richard is with her.""
A loud crash came through the telephone.
Thomas shouted.
Then the line went dead.
Officer Brooks immediately called emergency dispatch.
But before he could finish giving the location, a new notification appeared on the school security computer.
*LIVE CAMERA FEED — MAIN ENTRANCE.*
The screen showed Patricia Vance standing outside the school.
Richard Hale was beside her.
Between them stood Thomas Reed.
His hands were tied.
And Richard was holding a document against his chest.
Even through the grainy footage, I could read the bold heading.
*OFFICIAL CONFESSION — DANIEL ALVAREZ.*
Daniel stared at the monitor.
"They're trying to make me take the blame.""
Then the front entrance camera shifted.
A fourth person walked into the frame.
A woman wearing a familiar cream-colored suit.
Mrs. Eleanor Whitmore.
She looked directly into the camera.
And held up a photograph of Mateo.
May you like
Beneath it was a handwritten message.
*SEND THE BOY OUT, OR THE RECORDING DISAPPEARS FOREVER.*
