Chapter 14: The Truth About the Funeral
Detective Mitchell refused to let Daniel go alone.
After verifying the address, she arranged for two officers to accompany him.
Mateo was taken to a safe location with Sofia and Principal Collins.
Daniel protested.
"I've already lost eight years with my wife. I'm not losing another hour.""
Detective Mitchell remained firm.
"Then help me bring her back safely.""
The address led to a small medical facility on the outskirts of town.
It was an old building with faded blue doors and a narrow parking lot.
A receptionist looked up as they entered.
"Can I help you?""
Daniel showed her the photograph.
"Have you seen this woman?""
The receptionist's expression changed.
"Are you family?""
"I'm her husband.""
She looked at him for a long moment.
Then she reached beneath the counter and pulled out a folded envelope.
"She left this for you.""
Daniel took it.
His hands trembled as he opened the paper.
Inside was a handwritten message.
**Daniel, I know you believe I abandoned you and Mateo. I didn't. I tried to come home.
They wouldn't let me. Room 6. Please come quickly.**
Detective Mitchell looked toward the corridor.
"Stay behind me.""
They moved past several empty examination rooms.
At the end was Room 6.
The door was slightly open.
Daniel pushed it gently.
A woman sat beside the window.
Her hair was streaked with gray.
A thin scar crossed her forehead.
She looked up.
And Daniel stopped breathing.
"Elena?""
The woman rose slowly.
Her eyes filled.
"Daniel.""
He dropped his crutches.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Elena crossed the room and wrapped her arms around him.
Daniel held her as tightly as his injured body allowed.
"You were dead," he whispered.
She shook her head against his shoulder.
"I know.""
"I buried you.""
"I know.""
"Why?""
Elena began crying.
"I tried to reach you.""
Daniel pulled back.
"Then why didn't you?""
She looked toward Detective Mitchell.
"Because they threatened our son.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"Who?""
"Patricia Vance. Helen Whitmore. Richard Hale.""
Elena wiped her face.
"After the accident, I survived. I was taken to another hospital because my injuries were severe. I couldn't speak properly for several weeks.""
Daniel stared.
"Why didn't the hospital contact me?""
"They did.""
Detective Mitchell stepped closer.
"Do you have documentation?""
Elena nodded.
She opened a small drawer and removed a folder.
Inside were copies of hospital records, letters, and several envelopes.
"The first letter I sent never reached you. The second was returned. The third disappeared.""
Daniel examined the dates.
They were all from the months following the accident.
Elena continued.
"When I finally recovered enough to travel, Patricia visited me.""
"What did she want?""
"She told me the district was investigating your work records. She said you had been accused of stealing confidential student information.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That's impossible.""
"I knew that. But she showed me documents with your signature.""
Daniel looked at the papers.
They were forged employment records.
Elena's voice broke.
"She told me if I returned, they would report you to the police and have Mateo taken away.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"They used our son.""
"Yes.""
She reached into the folder and removed another document.
"This was the agreement they wanted me to sign.""
It stated that Elena would voluntarily relinquish contact with her husband and child while the district investigated Daniel's alleged misconduct.
In exchange, the district would provide financial assistance and medical care.
Elena had refused to sign.
So they had changed tactics.
"Helen Whitmore told me that if I contacted you again, she would make sure Mateo lost every benefit your family depended on.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Why didn't you go to the police?""
"I did.""
She showed him a complaint receipt.
It had been submitted to the county office.
The case had been closed without an investigation.
Detective Mitchell examined the document.
"Who signed the closure?""
Elena pointed.
"Patricia Vance's brother. He was working in the office at the time.""
Detective Mitchell photographed it.
"That's something we can investigate.""
Daniel sat down.
His entire body seemed exhausted.
"Eight years.""
Elena knelt beside him.
"I know.""
"I raised him alone.""
"I know.""
"He thought I couldn't take care of him.""
Elena began crying harder.
"I never wanted that.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Do you understand what he went through?""
She nodded.
"I know.""
Then she reached into her bag and removed a small notebook.
"I kept records of everything.""
Inside were dates, names, telephone numbers, and copies of messages.
One entry was underlined several times.
*OCTOBER 12 — HELEN CONFIRMED MATEO'S SCHOOL ASSIGNMENT.*
Daniel looked at the date.
It was the day before Mateo had started at Westbrook.
Elena pointed to the next entry.
"That's when I learned Eleanor Whitmore had personally requested that Mateo be placed in Mrs. Whitmore's classroom.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"She arranged it.""
Elena nodded.
"She wanted someone watching him every day.""
Detective Mitchell stood.
"Mrs. Alvarez, I need you to understand that this changes the scope of our investigation. We may be dealing with a coordinated effort involving fraudulent records, intimidation, and possible unlawful interference with your family.""
Elena nodded.
"I understand.""
Then Daniel asked the question that had been burning inside him.
"Why did you send me that message today?""
Elena looked toward the window.
"Because I learned they were going to hurt Mateo.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"What?""
She opened another document.
It was an internal email printed on district letterhead.
The sender was Richard Hale.
The recipient was Eleanor Whitmore.
The subject line read:
*FINAL PRESSURE MEASURE — ALVAREZ FAMILY.*
The message contained three instructions.
First, remove the classroom footage.
Second, discredit Daniel using the old disciplinary records.
Third, force Mateo to withdraw his father's complaint.
At the bottom was a sentence that made Daniel's blood run cold.
*If the family continues resisting, transfer the boy to a different placement before the investigation becomes public.*
Detective Mitchell took the document.
"Where did you get this?""
"From Helen's assistant. She contacted me anonymously.""
"Why would she help you?""
Elena looked down.
"Because she was the one who changed the death records.""
Daniel stared at her.
"What?""
Elena's voice became barely audible.
"She told me they had created a false death certificate using another unidentified woman's records.""
Detective Mitchell immediately stood.
"Do you know where that woman was buried?""
Elena nodded.
"Yes.""
Daniel looked at his wife.
"Who was in the coffin?""
Elena closed her eyes.
"I don't know.""
Then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
"It's Helen.""
Detective Mitchell motioned for her to answer on speaker.
Elena accepted the call.
"Hello?""
Helen Whitmore's voice filled the room.
"Elena, I see you've decided to betray us.""
Elena gripped the phone.
"You betrayed me first.""
Helen laughed softly.
"You have no idea what you're doing.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"You kept my wife from me for eight years.""
"Daniel Alvarez.""
Her voice sounded almost amused.
"You should be grateful we allowed your family to remain together.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"Where is the original recording?""
A pause followed.
Then Helen answered:
"At the place where your wife was supposed to be buried.""
Detective Mitchell exchanged a glance with Daniel.
Helen continued.
"And if you want to know who ordered the false death certificate, you should ask the woman who signed it.""
The call ended.
Elena looked at Daniel.
"I know that signature.""
"Whose?""
May you like
She whispered:
"Margaret Collins.""
