Chapter 4: The Woman Who Controlled the Evidence
Principal Collins stared at the photograph as though the woman standing in the background had suddenly become a ghost.
"That's Patricia Vance," she whispered.
I recognized the name immediately.
Mrs. Vance was the district's Director of Student Services. She visited our school several times each semester, usually wearing expensive suits and carrying a leather briefcase. Whenever she entered a classroom, teachers stood straighter and students were reminded to behave.
She was also the woman who had supposedly investigated Mateo's father's complaints.
Officer Brooks looked toward Principal Collins.
"Is she in the building?""
"She was here this morning," Principal Collins replied.
Daniel tightened his grip on his crutches.
"Where is she now?""
"Her office is on the second floor.""
Officer Brooks reached for his radio.
"Security to the second floor. Locate Patricia Vance. Do not allow anyone to access the Room 214 recordings.""
Principal Collins looked uncomfortable.
"Raymond, perhaps we should handle this through the proper administrative channels.""
Daniel let out a bitter laugh.
"That's what I tried doing for three months.""
"Mr. Alvarez, I understand your frustration.""
"No, you don't.""
His voice remained quiet, but every word carried years of exhaustion.
"My son wakes up before sunrise to help me get dressed. He works before school because our disability payments barely cover rent and medicine. Then he comes here and gets punished for being late.""
He looked down at Mateo.
"And the people who were supposed to protect him have been protecting each other.""
Mateo reached for his father's hand.
"Dad, please.""
Daniel immediately softened.
"I'm sorry, son.""
I stood beside them, feeling increasingly frightened.
Then Officer Brooks' radio crackled.
"Security office to Brooks. We have a problem.""
Officer Brooks lifted the radio.
"Go ahead.""
"The Room 214 recording has been requested for deletion.""
Principal Collins stiffened.
"By whom?""
The security officer hesitated.
"Patricia Vance.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Of course.""
Officer Brooks spoke sharply.
"Do not delete anything. Disable remote administrative access and preserve the original files.""
"Understood.""
Principal Collins immediately headed toward the main office.
"Come with me.""
Daniel followed as quickly as his crutches allowed.
Mateo and I stayed beside him.
When we reached the security office, Officer Brooks was standing in front of a wall of monitors.
A computer screen displayed a warning.
*REMOTE ADMINISTRATIVE REQUEST: DELETE CLASSROOM 214 FOOTAGE.*
Below it was the name of the account requesting the deletion.
PATRICIA VANCE.
Officer Brooks pointed at the screen.
"She has administrative privileges.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Can you stop her?""
"I'm trying.""
He typed rapidly.
A second notification appeared.
*REQUEST DENIED.*
Officer Brooks exhaled.
"Got it.""
But before anyone could celebrate, another notification appeared.
*SECONDARY ADMINISTRATOR OVERRIDE REQUESTED.*
Officer Brooks stared at the screen.
"Who else has access?""
Principal Collins answered slowly.
"Only the superintendent's office.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Richard Hale.""
She didn't respond.
The security officer opened another window.
A list of recorded files appeared.
There were dozens of entries from Room 214.
But the most important one was missing.
The recording covering the exact time Mrs. Whitmore had struck Mateo showed a strange status.
*FILE ACCESS RESTRICTED.*
Officer Brooks frowned.
"That's not normal.""
"Can you open it?"" Principal Collins asked.
"Not with my current permissions.""
Daniel placed his folder on the desk.
"Then don't open it here. Make a copy of the access logs.""
Officer Brooks nodded.
"Good idea.""
Suddenly, the security office door opened.
A woman in a cream-colored suit stepped inside.
Patricia Vance.
She carried a leather briefcase and wore a silver watch that caught the fluorescent light.
Her eyes moved from Principal Collins to Daniel.
Then she smiled.
"Well, this is an interesting gathering.""
Nobody answered.
She placed her briefcase on the counter.
"Margaret, I received an alarming report about an unauthorized recording issue.""
Principal Collins folded her arms.
"You requested the deletion of footage from Room 214.""
Patricia didn't blink.
"I requested that a corrupted file be removed.""
"It wasn't corrupted.""
"Are you an IT specialist now?""
Officer Brooks stepped forward.
"Ms. Vance, the request originated from your administrative account.""
Patricia looked at him.
"Then someone must have used my credentials.""
Daniel laughed without humor.
"That's convenient.""
Her eyes moved toward him.
"Daniel Alvarez. I remember you.""
"Apparently, you remember my paperwork, too.""
Patricia's smile disappeared.
"I don't appreciate your tone.""
"And I don't appreciate my son being threatened.""
She glanced at Mateo.
For a fraction of a second, something changed in her expression.
Then she looked back at Daniel.
"I think you're allowing your personal circumstances to cloud your judgment.""
Daniel's fingers tightened around his crutches.
"My circumstances have nothing to do with a teacher hitting my child.""
"Nobody has established that any physical contact occurred.""
I stepped forward.
"I saw it.""
Patricia turned toward me.
"And you are?""
"Sofia Reyes.""
"You're a student.""
"Yes.""
"Then you should let the adults handle this.""
I looked directly at her.
"That's what we did before. Nothing happened.""
Her jaw tightened.
Principal Collins moved between us.
"Patricia, this conversation is over. I'm requesting an independent investigation.""
Patricia picked up her briefcase.
"Be careful, Margaret. You may be placing your position at risk.""
Principal Collins didn't move.
"Are you threatening me?""
"I'm reminding you that district policies exist for a reason.""
Patricia turned toward the door.
Then she stopped beside Mateo.
"Young man, I hope you understand that false accusations can have serious consequences.""
Mateo stepped backward.
Daniel immediately moved between them.
"Stay away from my son.""
Patricia gave a small smile.
"Have a good afternoon.""
She left.
Officer Brooks watched her disappear down the hallway.
Then he turned toward Principal Collins.
"We need outside investigators.""
Principal Collins nodded.
"Call the district's independent compliance office.""
Daniel looked down at the folder.
"There is something else you need to see.""
He removed a document and unfolded it carefully.
It was a list of transportation assistance cancellations.
Beside each student's name was a date.
And beside each date was a handwritten notation.
*COMPLAINT RECEIVED. REVIEW PENDING. BENEFITS SUSPENDED.*
Officer Brooks read the first few entries.
Then his expression hardened.
"How many families?""
Daniel answered quietly.
"Seventeen.""
Mateo looked at his father.
"Seventeen?""
Daniel nodded.
"And your teacher was connected to every one of those complaints.""
Before anyone could respond, Officer Brooks' computer chimed.
A new message appeared.
It came from an internal district account.
The subject line read:
*IMMEDIATE STAFF SUSPENSION — MARGARET COLLINS.*
Principal Collins stared at the screen.
Then she opened the message.
Her hands began to shake.
May you like
Someone had just ordered her removed from the school.
And the person who signed the order was Richard Hale.
