Chapter 11: The Confession They Prepared for Me

Daniel didn't move when Officer Brooks showed him the complaint.

The document contained his name, his former employee identification number, and a list of accusations.

Unauthorized access.

Theft of confidential records.

Destruction of district property.

And one particularly disturbing allegation:

*COERCION OF A MINOR TO OBTAIN PROTECTED INFORMATION.*

Mateo read the last line.

"Dad, they're saying you made me do something?""

Daniel took the phone away.

"Don't read that.""

"But it's not true.""

"I know.""

Officer Porter examined the document.

"Who submitted this?""

"Richard Hale," Officer Brooks replied.

Porter frowned.

"He's the deputy superintendent?""

"Yes.""

"Then we need to separate the allegations from the evidence. Nobody gets arrested simply because an administrator sends an email.""

Daniel nodded.

But he looked exhausted.

For more than a year, he had been fighting people who knew how to turn official paperwork into weapons.

Now they were using the same system against him again.

Principal Collins sat beside him.

"Daniel, I need to tell you something.""

He looked at her.

"What?""

"When I became principal, I inherited several disciplinary files.""

"And?""

"I signed the annual compliance certification without reviewing every individual case.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Did you know children were being targeted?""

"No.""

"Did you question why so many families lost assistance?""

She looked down.

"I should have.""

For the first time, I saw her cry.

"I thought I was protecting the school by trusting the district.""

Daniel looked away.

"Trust isn't an excuse when children get hurt.""

"I know.""

He stood slowly.

"Then help us prove what happened.""

Principal Collins nodded.

"I will.""

Officer Porter interrupted.

"We have confirmation that the individuals outside have moved.""

Everyone turned toward him.

"Where?""

"The front entrance is empty. A vehicle was spotted leaving the parking lot.""

Officer Brooks looked concerned.

"What about Thomas Reed?""

"He was left near the visitor entrance. He's being transported to the hospital.""

Daniel immediately moved forward.

"Is he conscious?""

"Yes. He has injuries, but he's responding.""

Daniel exhaled.

"Thank God.""

Porter continued.

"He told the responding officers that Richard Hale gave him a document to sign.""

"What document?"" Principal Collins asked.

"A confession stating that Daniel Alvarez stole the records and fabricated the allegations against the district.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Thomas would never sign that.""

"He refused.""

The officer paused.

"That's apparently why they restrained him.""

Mateo looked at his father.

"Are they going to hurt him again?""

Daniel knelt beside him.

"Not if we can help it.""

Officer Porter turned toward the younger officer.

"Get the hospital's statement and request preservation of any evidence Thomas brought with him.""

She nodded and left.

Meanwhile, Officer Brooks opened the blue ledger again.

"There may be something else here.""

He turned several pages.

Near the back was a list of employee payments.

The entries were arranged by date, with initials beside each transaction.

Principal Collins leaned closer.

"Those look like reimbursement records.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Some of these payments don't match any approved expenses.""

Officer Brooks pointed to one entry.

"What's this?""

A payment had been made to a company called Whitmore Educational Consulting.

The amount was $48,000.

The date was two days after Daniel submitted his original complaint.

Principal Collins stared at the company name.

"Eleanor Whitmore?""

Daniel nodded.

"Possibly.""

Officer Porter took photographs of the page.

"Don't assume ownership until we verify it.""

Then Daniel turned another page.

His finger stopped.

A handwritten note appeared beneath the payment entry.

*SPECIAL REVIEW — ALVAREZ FAMILY.*

Beside it was a signature.

Richard Hale.

But beneath that signature was another name.

*ELEANOR WHITMORE — CONSULTANT.*

Officer Brooks looked at the date.

"That was the year Mrs. Whitmore began teaching at Westbrook.""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"She wasn't hired by accident.""

Mateo looked confused.

"What do you mean?""

Daniel closed the ledger.

"Someone placed her in your classroom.""

Principal Collins covered her mouth.

"To monitor you?""

"To monitor families like mine.""

I felt a chill run down my spine.

The teacher who had struck Mateo might have been part of the operation from the beginning.

Then Officer Porter's phone rang.

He answered.

"Porter.""

A woman's voice spoke urgently.

"Officer, this is the hospital. Thomas Reed is asking for Daniel Alvarez.""

Daniel immediately reached for the phone.

"Thomas? It's Daniel.""

A weak voice answered.

"They know about the second copy.""

Daniel looked at the ledger.

"What second copy?""

"The payment records. The original financial files.""

"Where are they?""

Thomas coughed.

"Not in the school.""

"Where?""

"Your old house.""

Daniel frowned.

"My house?""

"The house you lived in before your accident. There's a loose floorboard in the study.""

Daniel's eyes widened.

He looked at Mateo.

"Thomas, what did you put there?""

"The original recording.""

Daniel gripped the phone.

"Of the meeting?""

"Yes.""

"Who is speaking?""

Thomas took a breath.

"Richard. Patricia. Eleanor. And someone else.""

"Who?""

Thomas whispered:

"The current superintendent.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

The recording could prove that the district's highest officials had been involved.

But Thomas wasn't finished.

"Daniel, there's something about Mateo you need to know.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"What about my son?""

A pause followed.

Then Thomas said:

"The original list wasn't created because you filed a complaint.""

Daniel stared at the wall.

"Then why?""

"Because they had already selected your family.""

"Selected us for what?""

Thomas' voice became barely audible.

"Your son was listed as the first child in the program.""

Mateo moved closer.

"Why me?""

Thomas continued.

"Because your father had access to the transportation records. They believed you could be used to make him cooperate.""

Daniel's hand began trembling.

"Who selected him?""

Thomas whispered:

"Eleanor Whitmore.""

Then the call disconnected.

Daniel stood motionless.

Principal Collins looked at him.

"What does this mean?""

Daniel turned toward Mateo.

"It means they knew about you before you ever entered Mrs. Whitmore's classroom.""

For the first time, Mateo looked genuinely terrified of his own school.

Then Officer Brooks' phone rang.

He answered.

A voice on the other end spoke quickly.

"Brooks, you need to come outside.""

"Why?""

"We found something in the parking lot.""

"What?""

"A package addressed to Mateo Alvarez.""

Officer Brooks looked toward the boy.

"What's inside?""

The responding officer paused.

"A school disciplinary file.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Bring it here.""

The officer's voice dropped.

"Sir, I don't think you understand.""

"Then explain.""

"The file contains a photograph of Mateo from when he was eight years old.""

Daniel went completely still.

"And beneath the photograph...""

May you like

The officer hesitated.

"...is a document describing what they intended to do to your family.""
