Chapter 19: The Person He Left Behind

I read the message three times.

Your brother has been hiding someone for two years.

Evelyn stood beside me, watching my face.

"What is it?""

I handed her the phone.

She read the message, then immediately called Detective Harris.

"We're not going to that warehouse without police support," she said firmly.

I barely heard her.

Someone had been hidden for two years.

Someone connected to Rachel's death.

Someone Daniel had kept out of sight while the rest of us searched for answers.

My mind went to Tara.

Then Arthur.

Then the possibility that Daniel had hidden another witness.

But when my mother arrived at the house, she brought a name I never expected.

"His name is Peter.""

She stood in the doorway, trembling.

"Peter Cole.""

Evelyn looked up.

"Arthur's son?""

My mother nodded.

"Daniel told me Peter had disappeared after the accident. He said he'd stolen money from the company and run away.""

I frowned.

"Why would Daniel hide him?""

My mother looked at me.

"Because Peter was in the warehouse that night.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Was he involved?""

"No. He was the one who called for help.""

The room went silent.

My mother sat down.

"Peter worked for your father. He was a mechanic at the construction yard. Daniel asked him to help move Rachel's car after the accident.""

"Why would he agree?""

"Daniel told him Rachel had been drinking and had crashed. He said they needed to get her away from the road before someone found her.""

I closed my eyes.

"And Peter believed him?""

"At first.""

My mother wiped her cheeks.

"But when Peter realized Rachel was still alive, he wanted to call an ambulance. Daniel stopped him.""

I felt rage rising.

"What happened?""

"Daniel hit him. Then he locked him in a storage room.""

I stared at her.

"How long?""

"Until the next morning.""

"And then?""

"Peter escaped.""

I looked at Evelyn.

"Where is he now?""

My mother shook her head.

"I don't know. But Daniel contacted me last month. He said Peter had returned and was threatening to expose everything.""

Evelyn stepped closer.

"Did he give you an address?""

My mother reached into her handbag and removed a folded piece of paper.

"I kept this.""

It was a warehouse address on the edge of town.

The same location mentioned in the anonymous message.

Detective Harris arrived shortly afterward with two officers.

He examined the address.

"We'll approach it carefully. Nobody goes inside until we've secured the building.""

I insisted on accompanying them.

Harris looked at me.

"Mr. Bennett, this could be dangerous.""

"That man may know what happened to my wife.""

"I understand.""

"Then let me come.""

He studied me for a moment.

"Stay behind the officers. Do exactly what I say.""

The warehouse stood beyond a row of abandoned industrial buildings.

Its windows were covered with plywood.

The metal door was secured with a chain.

One officer cut through it.

The sound echoed across the empty yard.

Inside, dust covered the concrete floor.

There were old desks, broken chairs, and several rusted filing cabinets.

Harris signaled for us to spread out.

"Police! If anyone is inside, make yourself known!""

Nothing.

Then, from somewhere behind the cabinets, came a faint sound.

Three knocks.

We moved toward it.

A narrow door was hidden behind a stack of wooden pallets.

The officer opened it.

A man sat on a folding chair.

He was thin, unshaven, and looked exhausted.

When he saw us, he stood abruptly.

"Don't let Daniel take me.""

Harris raised his hands.

"You're safe. We're police officers.""

The man looked past him.

Then his eyes met mine.

"Marcus?""

I stepped forward.

"Peter?""

He nodded.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he began crying.

"I'm sorry.""

I swallowed.

"Where have you been?""

"Moving around. Staying with people Daniel couldn't find.""

"Why didn't you contact the police?""

Peter looked down.

"Because he had something on me.""

"What?""

He reached into his pocket and removed a small photograph.

It showed a young woman standing beside him.

On the back was a handwritten message.

If Peter talks, she disappears.

I stared at him.

"Who is she?""

"My sister.""

I felt a cold wave pass through me.

"Did Daniel threaten her?""

Peter nodded.

"He knew where she lived. He sent people to watch her.""

Harris took the photograph.

"We'll arrange protection.""

Peter looked at me.

"Rachel was alive when I left the warehouse.""

I couldn't breathe.

"Tell me everything.""

Peter sat down.

"Daniel brought her there after the crash. Tara was with him. She was carrying a blue folder.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"What happened to Rachel?""

"She kept asking for you. She wanted someone to call you.""

My eyes burned.

"Did Daniel?""

"No.""

Peter looked away.

"He kept asking where she'd hidden the original documents. Rachel refused to tell him.""

"Was she conscious?""

"Sometimes. She was badly injured.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"Why didn't you get her help?""

Peter's voice broke.

"I tried. Daniel locked me in the storage room. When I got out, Rachel was still there, but Daniel had left.""

"Where was Tara?""

"She was outside, talking on the phone.""

"Did you hear her?""

Peter nodded.

"She said, 'You told me she wouldn't survive the drive.''"

I felt sick.

"Who was she talking to?""

Peter looked directly at me.

"Your mother.""

I closed my eyes.

He continued.

"Then Tara said something else. She said, 'Marcus still doesn't know about the first plan.''"

I looked up.

"What first plan?""

Peter shook his head.

"I don't know. But she was crying. She kept saying they had promised her everything would be over.""

Harris stepped closer.

"Did you see anyone else?""

Peter hesitated.

"Yes.""

"Who?""

"A man came to the warehouse later. He wasn't with Daniel or Tara.""

Peter looked at me.

"He was wearing a company jacket.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Did you recognize him?""

Peter nodded.

"Arthur Cole.""

I stared at him.

"Arthur was there?""

"Yes. He argued with Daniel. He said they had to get Rachel medical help immediately.""

"Then what?""

"Daniel told him it was too late.""

Peter covered his face.

"I heard Arthur say he had already called an ambulance. But Daniel took his phone.""

I looked at Detective Harris.

"Arthur told me he didn't know what happened.""

Harris remained silent.

Peter reached into his jacket and removed a small plastic case.

"I took this from the warehouse before I escaped.""

Inside was a tiny memory card.

"What's on it?"" I asked.

"Daniel recorded everything. He wanted to use it to prove Rachel had hidden the documents.""

Harris took the case.

"We'll have it examined.""

Peter caught my arm.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

He swallowed.

"Rachel gave me a message for you.""

I felt my heart pound.

"What did she say?""

Peter's eyes filled.

"She said, 'Tell Marcus I never stopped believing him.''"

I closed my eyes.

For two years, I'd wondered whether Rachel had died thinking I'd betrayed her.

Now, through a man who had spent two years hiding, I heard the truth.

She hadn't.

Peter continued.

"She also said the documents weren't in the house. She said she'd given them to someone she trusted.""

I looked at Evelyn.

"Who?""

Peter shook his head.

"She didn't say.""

Then he reached into his pocket again.

This time, he pulled out a small key.

"She gave me this.""

I examined it.

A number was stamped on the metal.

*B-214.*

Evelyn recognized it immediately.

"That's a bank deposit box.""

My heart began racing.

"Which bank?""

Peter named a branch downtown.

Detective Harris took the key.

"We'll obtain the necessary legal authorization.""

I looked at Peter.

"Why didn't you tell anyone sooner?""

He lowered his eyes.

"Because Daniel told me he had already killed one person to protect those documents.""

I felt cold.

"And you believed him?""

Peter nodded.

Then he looked at me with fear.

"He said if I ever revealed what was inside that box, he'd make sure Lily was next.""

I stepped back.

The memory card, the key, the warehouse, the threats.

Everything was finally coming together.

But before we could leave, Detective Harris received a call.

He listened for several seconds.

Then his expression changed.

He turned toward me.

"Mr. Bennett, we have a problem.""

"What?""

"Daniel has been arrested.""

I felt my chest loosen.

"Where?""

"At the airport. He was trying to leave the country.""

"Then what's the problem?""

Harris looked at Peter.

"His lawyer says Daniel is ready to confess.""

I frowned.

"That's good, isn't it?""

Harris shook his head.

"He's offering a deal.""

"What kind of deal?""

The detective lowered his voice.

"He's willing to admit his role in the fraud and the events surrounding Rachel's accident.""

I stared at him.

"Then what does he want?""

Harris paused.

"He wants immunity for the person who actually ordered the murder.""

My blood turned cold.

"Who?""

May you like

The detective looked at me.

"Your mother.""
