Chapter 14: The Document Signed by Three Liars

I arrived at Evelyn's office twenty minutes later.

She had the disputed amendment spread across her desk.

My mother's signature appeared first.

Tara's appeared second.

The third signature belonged to a notary public.

I read the document carefully.

It claimed that my father had amended his will six months before his death, transferring a significant portion of Bennett Construction to any biological child Daniel acknowledged.

That would include Emma.

I looked at Evelyn.

"Is this legal?""

"Not automatically.""

"Why?""

"Because we have to establish whether the amendment was properly executed, whether your father had the legal capacity to sign it, and whether the document is genuine.""

I pointed to the date.

"My father was in the hospital then.""

Evelyn nodded.

"That's important.""

"He was barely conscious during those final weeks.""

"Do you have medical records?""

"Mom might.""

Evelyn wrote something down.

"Get them.""

I looked at the witness signatures.

"Why would my mother and Tara sign this?""

"That's what we need to establish.""

I leaned forward.

"Can you tell if the signature is forged?""

"Not conclusively. We'll need a forensic document examiner.""

She placed another sheet beside it.

"This is the original will Rachel left with me.""

I compared the signatures.

My father's handwriting was distinctive.

His capital M had an unusual curve.

On the disputed amendment, the M looked almost identical.

But something else bothered me.

The ink.

The signature appeared darker than the rest of the document.

"Could it have been copied?""

"Possibly.""

Evelyn pointed to a faint mark near the bottom.

"There's an indentation beneath the signature. That may help establish how it was produced.""

She closed the file.

"Marcus, I need you to understand something. If Daniel can persuade the court that this amendment is genuine, Lily's ownership could be challenged for years.""

I stared at the document.

"Then we prove it's fake.""

"We will.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from my mother.

*Please come see me. I need to tell you something about the document.*

I showed Evelyn.

She nodded.

"Go. But don't confront her aggressively. We need her full account.""

I drove to my mother's house.

She was sitting at the kitchen table with a small cardboard box.

When she saw me, she stood.

"Marcus.""

I placed the disputed amendment on the table.

"Did you sign this?""

She looked at it.

Then she nodded.

"Yes.""

I took a breath.

"Did Dad sign it?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

The room went quiet.

I sat down.

"Tell me exactly what happened.""

My mother opened the box.

Inside were several old photographs, hospital papers, and a small notebook.

"Daniel came to see me after your father died. He said he needed my signature to correct an administrative error.""

I stared at her.

"An administrative error?""

"He said your father had always intended to include Emma in the estate. He showed me a letter.""

"Was it the letter Emma has?""

My mother nodded.

"He said the amendment simply made the letter legally binding.""

I closed my eyes.

"Mom, you knew Dad was dead.""

"I know.""

"How could he sign a document six months after his death?""

She began crying.

"I didn't notice the date.""

I stared at her.

"You're telling me you signed a document without reading it?""

"I trusted Daniel.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"What about Tara?""

My mother lowered her eyes.

"She signed too.""

"Did you know she and Daniel were involved?""

"Not at first.""

"At first?""

My mother swallowed.

"Later, I found out they had been working together for months.""

I leaned forward.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Daniel threatened me.""

"What did he threaten?""

"He said he'd reveal something about your father's estate that would make you look like a thief.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

My mother reached into the box and pulled out a small envelope.

"Your father had another account.""

She placed it on the table.

"It contained money that Daniel had been managing.""

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a bank statement.

The account had been closed shortly after my father's death.

The balance had been transferred to an unfamiliar company.

Bennett Family Consulting.

I felt sick.

"How much?""

My mother whispered:

"Nearly three hundred thousand dollars.""

I looked up.

"Did Dad authorize this?""

"No.""

"How do you know?""

"Because he told me the money was meant for Lily.""

I stared at the statement.

Three hundred thousand.

The company transfers.

The forged signatures.

The fake amendment.

The pattern was unmistakable.

Daniel had been taking money that belonged to children and hiding it behind family paperwork.

I looked at my mother.

"Did you ever tell Rachel?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"When?""

"Two weeks before the accident.""

My stomach tightened.

"What did she say?""

"She told me she'd found proof. She said she was going to meet someone who could help.""

"Who?""

My mother reached into the box again.

This time, she removed a photograph.

Rachel was standing beside a woman in a dark coat.

The woman was holding a folder.

I recognized her.

Evelyn.

I stared at the photograph.

"Rachel met Evelyn before she died.""

My mother nodded.

"She said she had finally found someone she could trust.""

I looked at the date printed on the back.

Six days before the accident.

Then I noticed something written beneath it.

If anything happens to me, ask Evelyn about the recording.

I looked up.

"What recording?""

My mother shook her head.

"I don't know.""

I immediately called Evelyn.

She answered on the second ring.

"Marcus?""

"Rachel left a note about a recording.""

Silence.

Then Evelyn said, "Come back to my office.""

"What recording?""

"I'll explain when you arrive.""

I drove back.

Evelyn was waiting with a small digital recorder.

She placed it on the desk.

"Rachel gave me this shortly before her death.""

I stared at it.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"She specifically asked me to keep it sealed until there was evidence of an attempt to interfere with Lily's inheritance.""

I swallowed.

"And now?""

"Now we have that evidence.""

Evelyn pressed play.

Rachel's voice filled the room.

It was softer than I remembered.

But unmistakably hers.

"If you're hearing this, then something has happened, and I couldn't protect Lily the way I wanted.""

I closed my eyes.

Rachel continued.

"Marcus, I need you to know that I didn't hide the truth from you because I didn't trust you. I hid it because I was afraid of what would happen if you confronted Daniel too soon.""

I gripped the edge of the desk.

"Your father discovered that Daniel had been using company funds for personal expenses. He intended to remove him from the business.""

The recording crackled.

"Daniel found out. He begged your father for another chance. But your father had already prepared the original will.""

I looked at Evelyn.

She said nothing.

Rachel continued.

"Then I discovered that Tara had been helping Daniel transfer money from Lily's trust.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"I confronted her. She denied everything. But I found the bank statements.""

Rachel paused.

"Marcus, there's something else. Daniel isn't acting alone.""

I stopped breathing.

"Someone has been providing him with information from inside the company. Someone who has access to the original documents, the financial records, and your father's private correspondence.""

The recording went silent for a moment.

Then Rachel said:

"I believe it's someone you trust.""

I looked at Evelyn.

She pressed the stop button.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, I asked, "Did Rachel tell you who?""

Evelyn shook her head.

"No.""

"Did she ever identify the person?""

"She was going to. We had another meeting scheduled.""

"When?""

"The night she died.""

I stared at her.

Rachel had been on her way to meet Evelyn.

The same night Daniel and Tara followed her.

The same night she died.

I stood.

"Where were you that night?""

Evelyn looked directly at me.

"At my office.""

"Did Rachel arrive?""

"No.""

"Did you call her?""

"Several times.""

I sat back down.

"Then who was she meeting?""

Evelyn hesitated.

"She told me she had arranged to meet someone else first.""

"Who?""

Evelyn opened a drawer and removed an old appointment book.

She turned to the date of Rachel's accident.

One name was written beside the time.

*Emma Bennett.*

I stared at it.

"Emma?""

Evelyn nodded.

"Rachel told me she had something important to discuss with Tara's daughter.""

I felt confused.

"Emma was only seven.""

"I know.""

I looked at the page again.

Then Evelyn turned it around.

Beneath Emma's name was another handwritten note.

Bring the photograph. She deserves to know who her father really is.

My stomach dropped.

Rachel hadn't been trying to meet Daniel.

She had been trying to protect Emma.

May you like

And someone had known about that meeting.

Someone had made sure Rachel never arrived.
