Calm

Chapter 5: The Hidden Room

The hallway lights flickered back on.

Caleb was gone.

Not walking away.

Running.

I stood frozen for a moment, trying to understand what had just happened.

Then I heard Vivian’s footsteps approaching.

Slow.

Controlled.

The kind of footsteps someone made when they wanted you to know they weren’t afraid.

She appeared at the end of the hallway.

“Hannah.””

I forced myself to stay calm.

“Yes?””

“Have you seen Caleb?””

“No.””

She studied my face.

A little too carefully.

“You’re lying.””

I almost smiled.

“Based on what?””

“Because my son never comes upstairs unless he wants something.””

I looked at her.

“And what does that say about you?””

Her expression hardened.

“Careful.””

There it was.

The real Vivian.

Not the grieving wife.

Not the polite woman at breakfast.

The woman who believed fear was a useful tool.

I stepped into my room.

“Why are you really here?””

She followed me inside.

“I want you to understand something.””

“What?””

“Your father was sick for a long time.””

“Yes.””

“He became suspicious.””

I said nothing.

“He imagined problems.””

I looked at her.

“Did he?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You think because he left you money, you know everything.””

“No.””

I touched the letter in my pocket.

“I think because he knew something was wrong, he prepared.””

For a moment, Vivian looked nervous.

Then it disappeared.

“You always thought you were special.””

I felt the words hit.

Not because they hurt.

Because they revealed something.

This was never about the inheritance.

This was about my father choosing me.

“You hated that he trusted me.””

She laughed softly.

“Your father loved you.””

“Yes.””

“And he spent his whole life trying to fix your problems.””

I frowned.

“What problems?””

She smiled.

“Exactly.””

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

Samuel.

I answered immediately.

“Hannah.””

His voice was urgent.

“I need you to come to my office.””

“Why?””

“I found something in your father’s files.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Records showing Vivian had access to accounts she claimed she never knew existed.””

I looked at Vivian.

She watched me.

She knew.

Not exactly what Samuel found.

But she knew something was happening.

“When?””

Samuel lowered his voice.

“Tomorrow morning.””

“Can’t we do it now?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Another pause.

“Because someone tried to access the files remotely ten minutes ago.””

My stomach tightened.

“Someone tried to delete them?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the computer on Dad’s old desk.

“Samuel, where are the original files?””

“In your father’s private archive.””

“Where is that?””

Silence.

Then he said:

“Hannah, your father never trusted digital storage.””

I looked around the room.

“Then where?””

“He told me only one person knew.””

I already knew the answer.

“Caleb.””

“Yes.””

The call ended.

I turned toward Vivian.

She was no longer looking at me.

She was looking at the old bookshelf beside my father’s chair.

I noticed.

And suddenly, I understood.

She wasn’t here to talk.

She was searching.

I walked toward the bookshelf.

“What are you looking for?””

Vivian’s face changed.

“Nothing.””

But she had already made the mistake.

Her eyes had moved.

To the third shelf.

The old leather books.

Dad’s favorites.

I pulled one out.

Behind it was a small gap in the wall.

My breath caught.

A hidden compartment.

Vivian stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

The fear in her voice shocked me.

I opened it.

Inside was a small metal box.

And on top of it was a handwritten note.

Not from my father.

From Caleb.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Hannah,

If you found this, it means Mom knows.

I looked up.

Vivian was standing behind me.

Her face had lost all color.

The note continued.

The evidence Dad collected is inside. But before you open it, remember one thing:

The person helping Mom was not who Dad suspected.

It was someone closer.

Someone in this family.

I slowly turned toward Vivian.

Then toward the hallway.

Because suddenly, I understood.

My father wasn’t only investigating Vivian.

May you like

He was investigating everyone around her.

And the next name inside that box would decide who betrayed him.
