Chapter 11: The Truth My Father Buried
I stepped away from Caleb.
Not because I believed the message.
Because I didn’t know what to believe anymore.
The last two days had destroyed everything I thought I understood.
My inheritance.
My family.
My father.
My own identity.
Caleb raised his hands.
“Hannah, listen.””
I looked at him.
“Why should I?””
His face fell.
“Because you know me.””
“Do I?””
The question hurt both of us.
He looked down.
“No.””
A quiet answer.
“I guess you don’t.””
The honesty stopped me.
Before I could respond, the office door unlocked.
A woman walked in.
Not Vivian.
Not Samuel.
Someone older.
Elegant.
Gray hair.
A familiar face.
She looked at me.
And started crying.
“Oh my God.””
I froze.
“Who are you?””
She took a step closer.
“My name is Eleanor Pierce.””
The name meant nothing.
Until it did.
Pierce.
Another Pierce.
Caleb moved beside me.
“Who is she?””
The woman looked at him.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
She looked back at me.
“I was your grandmother’s sister.””
My mind struggled to process it.
“You’re my family?””
“Yes.””
“Why have I never met you?””
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“Because Robert made sure nobody could find you.””
My heart tightened.
“You knew my father?””
“I knew him before he became your father.””
She walked toward the desk.
“Robert saved you.””
I looked at the documents.
“From what?””
She became serious.
“From the Pierce family.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
She sighed.
“Your biological family built an empire.””
I looked at the skyscraper around us.
“The tower?””
She nodded.
“Not just the tower.””
She touched one of the files.
“Your mother inherited information that powerful people wanted hidden.””
“What information?””
Eleanor looked at Caleb.
Then at me.
“Evidence of financial crimes.””
The room became silent.
“Your mother was going to expose them.””
“And she died.””
Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.””
My throat tightened.
“And my father?””
“Robert took you and disappeared.””
I looked down.
“He raised me.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
“Because he wanted you to have a normal life.””
I almost laughed.
“Normal?””
I pointed around the room.
“A secret inheritance. A hidden identity. A family investigation?””
Eleanor looked at me sadly.
“Normal was impossible.””
The door suddenly opened again.
This time, Samuel walked in.
Everyone turned.
He stopped when he saw Eleanor.
His face changed.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“Eleanor.””
She looked at him.
“Samuel.””
I noticed immediately.
They knew each other.
“You knew,” I said.
Samuel looked at me.
“Hannah…”
“You knew all of this.””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I felt betrayed all over again.
“Were you helping my father?””
“Yes.””
“Were you hiding things from me?””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“Why?””
Samuel stepped inside.
“Because your father asked me.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Hannah.””
“No.””
My voice broke.
“My entire life was decided by people around me.””
Nobody spoke.
Samuel lowered his head.
“Your father made mistakes.””
I looked at him.
“He lied.””
“Yes.””
“He hid my identity.””
“Yes.””
“He let me believe he was my biological father.””
“Yes.””
The word hurt.
But Samuel continued.
“And he did it because he loved you.””
I looked away.
I wanted to be angry.
But I couldn’t deny that.
The man who raised me had given me everything.
Even if he had hidden the truth.
Then Eleanor spoke.
“Hannah, there is something else you need to know.””
I turned.
“What?””
She looked at Samuel.
Then at Caleb.
“The person who exposed your location was not Vivian.””
My heart stopped.
“Then who?””
She reached into her bag.
Pulled out a photograph.
And placed it on the desk.
It showed someone standing outside my father’s hospital room.
Watching.
Waiting.
I picked up the photo.
And my blood ran cold.
May you like
Because the person in the picture was someone I trusted.
Someone who had been beside me from the beginning.
