Chapter 13: The Mother Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

For a moment, nobody moved.

The alarm continued screaming through the office.

The red lights flashed across the walls.

But all I could see was the woman standing in the doorway.

My mother.

The word felt impossible.

My entire life, I had known one truth.

My mother died when I was a baby.

My father told me the story.

Everyone told me the story.

She was gone.

But she was standing in front of me.

Alive.

Older.

Tears running down her face.

“Hannah.””

Her voice broke.

I stepped back.

“No.””

She looked devastated.

“I know what this looks like.””

“What it looks like?””

My voice shook.

“You were dead.””

She closed her eyes.

“I know.””

Caleb stood beside me.

His expression was frozen.

“You’re Elizabeth?””

The woman looked at him.

“Yes.””

Samuel whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

She looked at him.

“You knew Robert would eventually tell her.””

Samuel looked away.

I noticed.

And that hurt.

Everyone knew pieces of my life except me.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had explanations.

Except me.

“Why?””

The question came out quietly.

My mother looked at me.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed.

It wasn’t happiness.

It was disbelief.

“Protect me?””

I pointed around the room.

“Do you understand what my life became?””

She stepped forward.

“I do.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice broke.

“I spent thirty-nine years believing the man who raised me was my biological father. I spent two days discovering my entire family was built on secrets.””

She wiped her tears.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

She didn’t defend herself.

She didn’t make excuses.

“I failed you.””

The honesty stopped me.

The alarm suddenly stopped.

The silence afterward felt heavier.

Samuel looked toward the door.

“We need to leave.””

My mother nodded.

“She found us.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

Her face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“The person who has been controlling everything.””

Before I could ask, the hallway outside filled with footsteps.

Someone was coming.

My mother grabbed my hand.

The touch felt strange.

Not because she was a stranger.

Because some part of me recognized it.

A mother’s touch.

“Come with me.””

I pulled my hand away.

“I don’t know you.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

That hurt more than anger.

She led us through the hidden passage.

Behind us, the office door opened.

A voice echoed.

“Find them.””

I recognized it.

Daniel.

My stomach tightened.

He had been the one smiling beside my hospital bed.

The one pretending to care.

We moved through the narrow hallway beneath the building.

Finally, we reached a small room.

My mother locked the door.

Everyone stood silently.

Then I turned to her.

“Start talking.””

She nodded.

“I never died.””

I crossed my arms.

“Why fake your death?””

“Because someone was trying to kill me.””

“Who?””

She looked at Samuel.

Then at me.

“The Pierce family.””

I frowned.

“But you were part of them.””

“Yes.””

She sat down.

“My family built their fortune through illegal deals. When I discovered what they were doing, I wanted to expose them.””

“And Dad helped you.””

She smiled sadly.

“Robert was the only person who believed me.””

I swallowed.

“So he took me.””

“He saved you.””

My eyes burned.

“He raised me.””

“Yes.””

“And then he lied.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

I waited.

Finally, she said:

“Because if the truth came out, you would have become a target.””

I looked at Samuel.

“Who was the person behind all this?””

Nobody answered.

Then my mother said:

“Your grandfather.””

I froze.

“My grandfather?””

She nodded.

“Your biological grandfather.””

The room went silent.

“He’s alive.””

My heart raced.

“The man who wanted you gone was not Vivian.””

She looked at me.

“It was the man who started the Pierce empire.””

A sound came from the hallway.

The door handle moved.

Someone was outside.

My mother whispered:

“We’re out of time.””

The lock began turning.

Then a voice came through the door.

An old man’s voice.

Calm.

Confident.

“Hannah.””

I froze.

“Open the door.””

May you like

The voice continued.

“I think it’s time you met your family.””
