Chapter 14: The Empire He Built
The door opened slowly.
Standing outside was an elderly man in a dark suit.
He didn’t look like a villain.
That was the most disturbing part.
He looked calm.
Powerful.
Like someone who had spent his entire life getting exactly what he wanted.
My mother stepped in front of me.
“Charles.””
The man smiled.
“Elizabeth.””
His eyes moved to me.
“Hannah.””
Hearing my name from him felt wrong.
Like he had no right to say it.
“I’ve waited a long time.””
I stared at him.
“You tried to destroy my family.””
His expression barely changed.
“Your father filled your head with stories.””
“My father loved me.””
“Yes.””
The answer surprised me.
“He did.””
Charles looked almost respectful.
“Robert was a good man.””
“Then why hurt him?””
“Because good men make emotional mistakes.””
I felt anger rising.
“He chose to protect me.””
“Yes.””
Charles stepped closer.
“He chose you over everything.””
The sentence sounded bitter.
And then I understood.
This was never about money.
It was about control.
“You were angry because he loved me.””
Charles smiled slightly.
“You’re more like your mother than I expected.””
My mother stepped forward.
“Leave her alone.””
He ignored her.
“You have no idea what your father sacrificed.””
I looked at him.
“Tell me.””
Charles laughed softly.
“You think the tower was an inheritance?””
“No.””
“It was insurance.””
“Against you?””
His expression changed.
“Against everyone.””
He walked into the room.
“Robert knew the world he lived in. He knew power attracts betrayal.””
I looked at Samuel.
“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Charles answered.
“Because Robert believed secrets could keep you safe.””
He looked at me.
“He was wrong.””
The words hit.
Because maybe he was.
Secrets had protected me.
But they had also destroyed my understanding of my own life.
I stepped closer.
“What do you want?””
Charles smiled.
“Your cooperation.””
“For what?””
“The Pierce empire belongs to you.””
I laughed.
“I don’t want it.””
“That is exactly why you should have it.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“Everyone else wanted power. You never did.””
He looked at my mother.
“Your father knew that.””
I looked at Charles carefully.
“You expect me to believe you?””
“No.””
He reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a document.
“You should believe this.””
Samuel took it.
His face changed.
“What is that?””
Charles smiled.
“The original agreement.””
I looked at Samuel.
“What agreement?””
He didn’t answer.
My mother did.
“The agreement between Robert and Charles.””
My stomach tightened.
“What agreement?””
My mother looked at me.
“Your father promised Charles one thing.””
“What?””
“That you would inherit everything.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does.””
She looked at Charles.
“Because Charles knew Robert would choose you.””
Charles nodded.
“And that was the only way to remove the empire from my control.””
Silence.
I looked at him.
“You helped my father?””
A strange sadness crossed his face.
“Once.””
The answer confused me.
“Then why attack him?””
“Because I changed my mind.””
There it was.
The truth.
Not a misunderstanding.
Not an accident.
A choice.
Charles looked at me.
“But Robert prepared for that too.””
A phone rang.
Everyone turned.
Samuel answered.
His face changed.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“They found Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“Where?””
Samuel slowly lowered the phone.
“He’s in custody.””
I exhaled.
Finally.
But Samuel wasn’t relieved.
He looked at me.
“Hannah.””
“What?””
“He wasn’t working alone.””
My heart sank.
“Who else?””
Samuel looked toward the hallway.
Then said:
“Someone who has been close to you for years.””
I felt cold.
“Who?””
Samuel hesitated.
May you like
Then whispered:
“Vivian.””
