Chapter 8: The Three Names in the Ledger

Daniel dragged a wooden chair beneath the ventilation opening.

I placed the ledger inside my coat.

"Go," I whispered.

He climbed onto the chair and pushed at the metal panel.

It didn't move.

"Daniel!""

"I'm trying!""

Outside, something struck the door.

The old lock groaned.

Thomas spoke through the metal.

"You're making this unnecessarily complicated.""

Daniel pulled harder.

A section of the ventilation cover finally came loose.

Behind it was a narrow service passage.

He looked down at me.

"Can you fit?""

"I'm sixty-two, not eighty.""

Despite everything, he almost smiled.

He crawled through first.

I followed, scraping my elbow against the metal edge.

The passage was dark and smelled of damp insulation.

Behind us, the storage room door crashed open.

Thomas shouted.

"Find them!""

I froze.

Another voice answered.

"Which way?""

"Check the service corridor!""

Daniel reached backward and grabbed my hand.

We crawled until the passage opened into a maintenance room on the opposite side of the basement.

He pushed open a small door.

We emerged behind a row of old electrical panels.

Daniel checked the corridor.

"Clear.""

We hurried toward the stairs.

Just before reaching the exit, I heard footsteps behind us.

A man appeared at the end of the corridor.

He wore a black jacket and held a flashlight.

"Hey!""

Daniel grabbed my arm.

"Run!""

We burst through the basement door and reached the lobby.

The security guard stood up.

"Mrs. Whitmore?""

"Call the police," I said.

"Someone is trying to break into a private storage room.""

Daniel looked toward the entrance.

A black SUV was parked outside.

Its headlights were on.

The driver was watching us.

"Mom, we need to leave.""

We ran to Daniel's car.

As he started the engine, my phone finally regained its signal.

Three missed calls appeared.

All from Margaret.

I called her immediately.

"Margaret, what's happening?""

Her voice was frantic.

"Mrs. Whitmore, the police are at the estate.""

"Why?""

"Mr. Thomas filed a complaint. He says you've stolen confidential financial records belonging to the foundation.""

I looked at Daniel.

"He's trying to get ahead of us.""

Margaret continued.

"There's something else. Miss Reed has been here.""

My stomach tightened.

"Vanessa?""

"Yes. She came back with two men. They demanded access to your office.""

"Did you let them in?""

"Of course not. But they said they had legal authority.""

I closed my eyes.

"Keep everyone away from the office. I'm coming.""

Daniel drove straight back to the estate.

When we arrived, two police officers were standing near the entrance.

Thomas was beside them.

Vanessa stood a few feet away, holding a tissue to her eyes.

The moment she saw us, she rushed forward.

"Daniel!""

He stepped away.

"Don't.""

She stopped.

Thomas approached the officers.

"That's them. They removed confidential property from a secured foundation archive without authorization.""

I held up the black ledger.

"This belongs to my late husband.""

Thomas smiled.

"That is precisely what we need to establish.""

One officer stepped forward.

"Mrs. Whitmore, we'd like to ask you a few questions.""

"Certainly.""

Thomas interrupted.

"Before that, I believe you should know the ledger contains financial information that may implicate the foundation's trustees.""

I turned toward him.

"Interesting. You've read it?""

His expression changed slightly.

"No.""

"Then how do you know what's inside?""

The officer looked between us.

"Mr. Whitmore, please allow us to speak.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Officer, my uncle has been trying to obtain that ledger. He came to the storage facility and attempted to force his way inside.""

Thomas shook his head.

"That's a ridiculous accusation.""

I opened the ledger.

"Then perhaps we should start with the names.""

I turned to the first marked page.

There were three names written in Richard's handwriting.

Thomas Whitmore.

Claire Morgan.

And a third name.

I stared at it.

My heart seemed to stop.

*Margaret Collins.*

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Margaret had worked for us for twenty-three years.

She'd been the one who warned me about Vanessa.

She'd helped me disguise myself.

She'd brought me the security reports.

And now her name was in Richard's ledger.

Daniel looked over my shoulder.

"Mom?""

I couldn't answer.

Thomas watched my reaction.

Then he smiled.

"There it is.""

Vanessa lowered her tissue.

"Now do you understand?""

I looked at Thomas.

"Explain what these names mean.""

He shrugged.

"Your husband discovered a financial network. He believed those three people were connected to it.""

"Connected how?""

Thomas leaned closer.

"Margaret approved some of the original payments. Claire Morgan controlled the consulting companies. And I handled the financial arrangements.""

Daniel's voice was sharp.

"You just admitted you were involved.""

Thomas looked at him.

"I admitted I handled the arrangements. There's a difference.""

I turned another page.

Beside each name were handwritten amounts.

Margaret's total was $18,000.

Claire's was $146,000.

Thomas's was $312,000.

But beneath those entries was another note.

One name is innocent. One name is an accomplice. One name is the architect.

I looked up.

"Which one is which?""

Thomas said nothing.

Then Vanessa spoke.

"Margaret is the innocent one.""

I stared at her.

"How would you know?""

She smiled faintly.

"Because I know who the architect is.""

Daniel stepped toward her.

"Who?""

Vanessa reached into her purse and removed her phone.

She opened a photograph.

It showed a woman standing outside a bank, holding a folder.

I recognized her immediately.

Claire Morgan.

But the woman beside her was someone I knew even better.

My own daughter-in-law-to-be.

Vanessa.

Daniel stared at the photograph.

"How long have you known Claire?""

Vanessa lowered her phone.

"Since before I met you.""

Silence swallowed the entrance hall.

Then she looked directly at me.

"And if you want to know why I agreed to marry your son, Eleanor, you should turn to the last page of that ledger.""

My fingers trembled as I did.

There, in Richard's handwriting, was a sentence I had never imagined reading.

The architect of this entire operation has been using a false identity.

Beneath it was a name.

Not Thomas.

Not Claire.

Not Margaret.

It was a name Daniel recognized immediately.

He whispered:

"That's impossible.""

May you like

Because the name belonged to someone who had been dead for eleven years.

His father.
