Chapter 19: The Woman Who Had Been Behind Everything

I read the message three times.

Come home alone if you want to see your son alive.

Daniel stood beside me, his jaw clenched.

"You're not going anywhere alone.""

Detective Harris immediately took the phone from my hand.

"Nobody is going anywhere without police protection. This is now an active threat.""

He called the local officers and requested an urgent security check at Whitmore Hall.

But before he could finish, my phone rang.

Agnes Whitmore.

I stared at the screen.

For eleven years, I'd considered her one of the few people who had remained loyal to our family after Richard's death.

She had attended every family gathering.

She had sent flowers on my birthday.

She had even helped Daniel choose the engagement ring for Vanessa.

And all that time, she had known something about the medication that killed my husband.

I answered.

"Hello, Agnes.""

Her voice sounded exactly as I remembered.

Soft.

Controlled.

Almost affectionate.

"Eleanor, darling. I was wondering when you'd finally call.""

"Where are you?""

"At your house.""

"Why?""

A quiet laugh.

"Because I have something that belongs to me.""

Daniel leaned closer.

I put the call on speaker.

"What do you want?""

"I want the documents Richard left behind.""

"You mean the second will?""

"I mean everything.""

"Thomas has been arrested.""

"Thomas was always a fool. He believed he could manage people through fear. That's why he eventually became careless.""

My stomach tightened.

"Did you arrange Richard's death?""

Agnes didn't answer immediately.

Then she sighed.

"Your husband was a stubborn man.""

"That isn't an answer.""

"He discovered things he was never supposed to discover.""

I gripped the phone.

"Did you poison him?""

"Richard was dying anyway.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"You killed my father!""

Agnes heard him.

"Daniel. My dear boy. You should be grateful I gave you the opportunity to grow up without knowing what your father had become.""

Daniel's face twisted with anger.

"What does that mean?""

"Your father was preparing to destroy everything. He intended to expose the foundation's financial structure, implicate people who had protected this family for generations, and leave you with nothing but a ruined name.""

I interrupted.

"So you killed him to protect the Whitmore name?""

"No, Eleanor. I protected the family from him.""

I felt sick.

"You had no right.""

"Perhaps not. But someone had to make the difficult decisions.""

Harris motioned for me to keep her talking.

I swallowed.

"Why did you come after me?""

"Because Richard left something behind. Something your mother originally found. Something that proves where the foundation's money went.""

I looked at Laura.

She was watching me carefully.

"Why did you involve Vanessa?""

"Rebecca was useful. She was young, ambitious, and willing to do what she was told. Claire was useful too. Thomas believed he was directing them, but he was only carrying out my instructions.""

Daniel shook his head.

"You made her pretend to love me.""

Agnes's voice softened.

"I never expected you to become so attached.""

"You're disgusting.""

"You're emotional, Daniel. You always have been.""

I felt anger rising inside me.

"Did you plan to poison me?""

"Your mother had arranged the original treatment. I simply made sure it was available when needed.""

"She didn't know it was poison.""

"Your mother knew more than you think.""

I froze.

"What did you say?""

Agnes gave a quiet laugh.

"Ask yourself why your mother kept that private account hidden from your father. Ask yourself why she spent the final months of her life meeting with people from the foundation.""

"My mother died of a heart condition.""

"That's what the doctors wrote.""

My hands began shaking.

"You're lying.""

"Am I?""

The line went silent for a moment.

Then Agnes spoke again.

"Come home, Eleanor. Bring the original authorization. If you do, Daniel walks away from this.""

Harris shook his head.

I looked at him.

He mouthed, Keep her talking.

"How do I know Daniel is safe?""

"Because I'm not Thomas. I don't make threats I can't carry out.""

The call ended.

Harris immediately turned to the officers.

"We're moving.""

Within minutes, two vehicles were on the road.

Daniel sat beside me, holding my hand so tightly that my fingers hurt.

"Mom, don't believe anything she said about Grandma.""

"I don't know what to believe anymore.""

He looked at me.

"Then believe what we can prove.""

Those words steadied me.

When we arrived at Whitmore Hall, the gates were open.

Two security officers were lying beside the driveway.

Alive, but unconscious.

Police rushed toward them.

I ran for the house.

Harris caught my arm.

"Stay behind me.""

The front door stood open.

Inside, the entrance hall was silent.

Then a voice came from the drawing room.

"You're late, Eleanor.""

Agnes stood beside the fireplace.

She wore a cream suit and a pearl necklace.

Her silver hair was perfectly arranged.

In her hand was a small pistol.

Daniel stopped.

"Where's Vanessa?""

Agnes smiled.

"She's upstairs.""

"Let her go.""

"She isn't my concern anymore.""

I looked at the stairs.

"Where is she?""

"Safe enough, for now.""

Agnes turned toward me.

"Did you bring the document?""

I held up the folder.

"Yes.""

"Put it on the table.""

Harris moved slightly forward.

Agnes raised the weapon.

"One more step, Detective, and I'll shoot.""

The room went still.

I placed the folder on the table.

"Now tell me the truth about my mother.""

Agnes looked at me.

For the first time, her expression changed.

"Your mother was a sentimental woman. She believed the foundation should be controlled by the people who needed it, not the people who funded it.""

"And you disagreed.""

"I believed the Whitmore family had earned the right to control its own fortune.""

"It wasn't our fortune.""

Agnes's smile disappeared.

"Do you know what your mother did? She found the original accounts. She threatened to expose the people who had been moving money for years.""

"Who?""

"People who are no longer alive.""

"Did you kill her?""

Agnes lowered her voice.

"I gave her a medication that was supposed to make her sleep. She had a weak heart. The doctor said the dose was dangerous, but I didn't believe it would be fatal.""

I felt my knees weaken.

"You killed my mother.""

"I didn't intend to.""

"And Richard?""

"He made the same mistake. He thought he could take everything away from me and still keep his family safe.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"You murdered them both.""

Agnes turned the gun toward him.

"Don't.""

I moved between them.

"Agnes, look at me.""

She did.

"Put the gun down.""

"You don't understand. If those documents become public, the entire foundation will collapse. Thousands of people will lose the support they depend on.""

"Then let the truth come out and rebuild it honestly.""

She laughed.

"With what? Your reputation? Your son's broken engagement?""

"With the money you stole.""

Her eyes narrowed.

I reached into my coat and pulled out a small digital recorder.

Agnes stared at it.

Harris's expression changed.

I had activated it before leaving the Maine property.

Every word Agnes had spoken on the phone was recorded.

And now, every confession inside the drawing room was being captured too.

"You're recording me?"" she whispered.

"Yes.""

Her face hardened.

"You stupid woman.""

She raised the pistol.

A crash sounded from the staircase.

Vanessa appeared at the top, her wrists tied with a strip of fabric.

"Agnes, don't!""

Agnes turned.

That was the moment Harris moved.

He lunged forward.

A gunshot exploded.

Daniel pulled me to the floor.

The bullet shattered a framed photograph above the fireplace.

Officers rushed into the room.

Agnes was forced against the wall, the pistol knocked from her hand.

Vanessa stumbled down the stairs.

"Daniel!""

He stood, staring at her.

"Don't come near me.""

She stopped.

Agnes was handcuffed.

As officers led her away, she turned toward me.

"You think this is over?""

I stood beside Daniel.

"No. But it ends with the truth.""

Agnes smiled faintly.

"You still haven't found the original account.""

I frowned.

"What account?""

"The one your mother created. The one Richard spent his final years trying to recover.""

She leaned closer as the officers escorted her through the doorway.

"Your mother didn't leave that money to the foundation, Eleanor.""

I felt a chill.

"Where did she leave it?""

Agnes looked at me.

"She left it to you.""

Then she was gone.

I turned toward Daniel.

He looked as shocked as I felt.

And somewhere inside Whitmore Hall, behind a wall that had held our family's secrets for generations, something began to ring.

May you like

A telephone.

One that hadn't been connected for eleven years.
