Chapter 15: The Bride Who Had Been Waiting Eleven Years

Daniel spent the next twenty minutes pacing the library.

He kept calling Vanessa.

Every call went unanswered.

Finally, he threw his phone onto the sofa.

"She planned all of this.""

I sat beside the fireplace, holding Richard's letter.

"Possibly.""

"Possibly?""

He turned toward me.

"Mom, she knew who I was before we met. She knew about Dad. She knew about the foundation. She deliberately entered our lives.""

I nodded.

"I believe that.""

"Then why are we still sitting here?""

I looked at him.

"Because we need evidence strong enough to keep her from escaping responsibility.""

Daniel rubbed his face.

"I was going to marry her.""

His voice broke.

"I was going to spend my entire life with her.""

I reached for his hand.

"You didn't know.""

"I should have seen something.""

"She spent months making sure you saw exactly what she wanted you to see.""

He sat beside me.

"Do you think she ever loved me?""

I didn't answer immediately.

I wanted to tell him no.

I wanted to say that everything had been an act, that he could erase her from his life and move forward.

But I couldn't know that.

And he deserved the truth, not another comforting lie.

"I think she wanted something from this family," I said gently.

"Whether she ever cared about you is something only she can answer.""

Daniel stared at the fire.

Then Margaret entered.

She was carrying an old photograph album.

"Mrs. Whitmore, I found something.""

I looked up.

"What is it?""

She placed the album on the table.

"I remembered seeing Claire and Vanessa together at the estate years ago. I thought I might have a photograph.""

We opened it.

There were pictures from a foundation fundraiser held eleven years earlier.

Richard stood beside several donors.

Thomas was near the entrance.

And in the background, two young women were standing together.

One was unmistakably Claire Morgan.

The other had dark hair and wore a silver dress.

I looked closer.

Vanessa.

But beneath the photograph was a handwritten caption.

*Claire Morgan and Rebecca Hale — October 12.*

Daniel frowned.

"Rebecca Hale?""

Margaret nodded.

"That's the name she used back then.""

I examined the photograph.

The date was two days before Richard died.

"Who took this?""

Margaret checked the back.

"Your husband.""

There was something else written beneath the date.

The two sisters have returned.

I looked at Daniel.

"Your father knew they were sisters.""

He turned another page.

A second photograph showed Richard standing in front of the estate with Claire.

On the back:

Claire claims she knows nothing. Rebecca is the one watching Eleanor.

I felt a chill.

Richard had known I was being watched.

He'd known about Vanessa.

He'd known about Claire.

And he'd left me clues that I hadn't understood until now.

Daniel pulled the photograph from my hand.

"Why didn't Dad tell us?""

"Perhaps he thought it would put us in danger.""

"Or perhaps he was planning to expose them before he died.""

I nodded.

We continued through the album.

Near the end, we found a photograph of Richard standing beside a woman I didn't recognize.

She was wearing a hospital identification badge.

On the back, Richard had written:

Dr. Bennett's assistant. She knows about the medication.

Daniel looked at me.

"Mom, do you know her?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

He turned the photograph over again.

There was a name beneath the note.

*Laura Pierce.*

I reached for my phone.

"Detective Harris needs to see this.""

Before I could call, my phone rang.

It was the detective.

"Mrs. Whitmore, we've located Vanessa.""

My heart jumped.

"Where?""

"At a private airport outside New Haven. She attempted to board a charter flight using a different name.""

Daniel stood.

"Which name?""

The detective paused.

"Rebecca Hale.""

I looked at the photograph.

The woman who had once stood beside Claire.

The woman Richard had identified as watching me.

"Have you arrested her?""

"Not yet. She's cooperating with the airport security team, but we need to establish whether she has committed any offense connected to the financial fraud.""

Daniel grabbed his jacket.

"I'm coming.""

"Mr. Whitmore, I strongly recommend you stay away.""

"I need to speak to her.""

The detective sighed.

"We'll arrange an interview.""

I interrupted.

"Detective, there's something you need to know. Vanessa was using the identity Rebecca Hale eleven years ago. We have photographs proving she was present at the estate two days before Richard died.""

The detective's tone changed.

"Can you send those photographs?""

"Yes.""

"Do not contact her directly. We'll take it from here.""

He disconnected.

Daniel looked at me.

"She's at the airport. We could be there in twenty minutes.""

"No.""

"Mom—"

"Your father spent eleven years trying to protect us. I'm not going to let you ruin that by confronting someone who may be dangerous.""

He looked frustrated.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice spoke.

"Daniel, it's me.""

He froze.

Vanessa.

I gestured for him to put the call on speaker.

"What do you want?"" he asked.

"Please don't hang up.""

"Why shouldn't I?""

"Because you deserve to hear the truth.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Eleven years ago, you were standing in my parents' house under another name. You helped poison my father. What truth could possibly explain that?""

Vanessa was silent.

Then she whispered:

"I didn't poison your father.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Emily says you brought the second bottle.""

"I did.""

"Then explain.""

"I was told it was a replacement. Thomas said your father had been taking the wrong medication.""

I leaned closer to the phone.

"Why were you in my bedroom?""

Vanessa sighed.

"Because I was looking for the prescription.""

"Why?""

"Because Thomas told me it was evidence that could destroy all of us.""

I felt my heart pounding.

"Did you know the bottle contained poison?""

A long silence followed.

Then she said:

"Not until after Richard died.""

Daniel's voice was cold.

"And you still came back into our lives?""

"I had no choice.""

"Nobody forced you to date me.""

Vanessa began crying.

"Daniel, you don't understand. Thomas threatened me. He said if I didn't keep an eye on your mother, he'd make sure I went to prison.""

I shook my head.

"That's convenient.""

She ignored me.

"Your uncle promised that after the wedding, he'd transfer the remaining foundation assets into a private trust. I was supposed to receive my share and disappear.""

Daniel stared at the phone.

"So the wedding was a business arrangement?""

"At first.""

"And later?""

Vanessa's voice softened.

"I did care about you.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

I could see the pain in his face.

Then Vanessa said something unexpected.

"But there's one thing Thomas never told me.""

"What?""

"Your father left a second will.""

I went still.

"That's impossible. Richard had one will, and it was executed after his death.""

"That's what Thomas wanted everyone to believe.""

Daniel stepped closer to the phone.

"Where is it?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"At the house in Maine.""

My fingers tightened around Richard's letter.

The retirement house.

The hidden authorization.

The original ledger.

And now a second will.

"Why would it be there?"" I asked.

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"Because Richard knew Thomas would control the estate after his death. He left instructions that the second will could only be opened by you and Daniel together.""

Daniel looked at me.

"What's in it?""

Vanessa took a breath.

"Everything.""

"Who inherits the foundation?""

"Your mother.""

"Who controls the accounts?""

"Your mother.""

"And what about the money Thomas stole?""

Vanessa paused.

Then she answered:

"Your father left a complete record of every transfer, every false company, and every person involved.""

I felt tears sting my eyes.

For eleven years, I'd believed Richard had died with his secrets.

But he had prepared for this.

He had left us a path to the truth.

"Vanessa," I said, "why are you telling us this now?""

Her answer came softly.

"Because Thomas knows I'm talking to you.""

A loud noise came through the phone.

Then a man's voice shouted in the background.

"Rebecca! Put the phone down!""

Vanessa gasped.

Daniel stood.

"Who is that?""

She whispered:

"He's here.""

The call ended.

I immediately called Detective Harris.

He answered on the first ring.

"Mrs. Whitmore?""

"Vanessa is in danger. Someone has reached her at the airport.""

"We have officers with her.""

"Then get them to check the person approaching her!""

There was a pause.

I heard the detective speaking to someone nearby.

Then he returned.

"Mrs. Whitmore, we've got a problem.""

"What?""

"The woman we believed was Vanessa Reed isn't at the airport anymore.""

My stomach dropped.

"What do you mean?""

"The woman we've been questioning is Claire Morgan.""

Daniel stared at me.

I gripped the phone.

"Then where is Vanessa?""

The detective's answer made my blood run cold.

"According to the airport records, Rebecca Hale boarded a flight twenty minutes ago.""

"Where was she going?""

"Bangor, Maine.""

I looked at Daniel.

Our destination.

The house Richard had hidden for eleven years.

And suddenly I understood.

May you like

Vanessa wasn't running away from us.

She was going to find Richard's second will before we could reach it.
