Chapter 16: The House My Husband Bought in Secret
The flight to Maine took less than two hours.
But every minute felt like an eternity.
Daniel sat beside me, staring at the photographs from the old album. He hadn't spoken since Detective Harris confirmed that Vanessa—or Rebecca Hale—had boarded a plane to Bangor.
I kept thinking about Richard's letter.
The original authorization is hidden where we first promised to spend our retirement.
For eleven years, I'd believed that dream had died with him.
Now I wondered how many other things about my husband's final days I'd misunderstood.
When we landed, Detective Harris was waiting beside an unmarked vehicle.
He looked exhausted.
"Mrs. Whitmore, I've arranged for local officers to meet us at the property.""
"Has Vanessa arrived?""
"We don't know. Her flight landed twenty minutes ago.""
Daniel opened the passenger door.
"Then let's go.""
The house was located outside Camden, along a narrow road lined with pine trees. It was smaller than Whitmore Hall, with weathered white siding, a green front door, and a porch overlooking the distant water.
I stopped at the gate.
For a moment, I couldn't move.
Richard and I had stood on that same stretch of land eleven years earlier. We'd laughed about growing old there, growing tomatoes, and arguing over which books belonged in the living room.
He'd told me it was the kind of place where a person could finally breathe.
I turned toward the detective.
"Did he buy it?""
Harris checked his notes.
"According to the property records, Richard Whitmore purchased it through a private trust three months before his death.""
Three months.
While I was planning our retirement, he was preparing for the possibility that he wouldn't live to see it.
We approached the front door.
It wasn't locked.
Inside, the air smelled of dust and cedar.
The furniture was covered with white sheets. A small clock sat on the mantel, stopped at 10:14.
Daniel noticed it.
"That's the date Dad died.""
I walked toward the mantel.
There was a framed photograph of Richard and me on our anniversary.
Beneath it lay a small brass key.
I picked it up.
Stamped into the metal were the letters W-17.
The same marking as the storage room key.
Daniel stared.
"He made another copy.""
I examined the back of the photograph.
A message was written in Richard's handwriting.
For Eleanor, when the house is no longer a dream.
I swallowed hard.
Harris looked around.
"Let's search carefully. We don't know whether anyone has entered recently.""
We began with the living room.
The drawers contained old receipts, property documents, and photographs.
Nothing that resembled a will.
Then Daniel noticed a loose floorboard near the fireplace.
He knelt and lifted it.
Beneath it was a flat metal box.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside were three envelopes.
One was marked:
*ELEANOR — READ FIRST.*
The second:
*DANIEL — WHEN YOU ARE READY.*
The third:
*ORIGINAL FOUNDATION AUTHORIZATION.*
I reached for the first envelope.
But before I could open it, Detective Harris raised his hand.
"Wait.""
He pointed toward the hallway.
A faint sound came from the back of the house.
Footsteps.
Daniel stood.
"Who's there?""
No answer.
Harris motioned for us to remain behind him.
He moved toward the hallway, one hand near his belt.
Then a woman's voice spoke.
"Don't shoot. I'm not armed.""
A young woman stepped into view.
She wore a dark coat and held a leather folder against her chest.
I recognized her from the photograph.
Laura Pierce.
Dr. Bennett's former assistant.
The woman Richard had described as someone who knew about the medication.
Harris raised his voice.
"Hands where I can see them.""
She obeyed.
"Mrs. Whitmore," she said, looking directly at me.
"I've been trying to find you for eleven years.""
I stepped forward.
"Why?""
"Because I know what happened to your husband.""
Daniel moved closer.
"Then tell us.""
Laura looked at the metal box.
"Before I do, you need to know that Rebecca isn't the only person coming here.""
"Who else?"" Harris asked.
Laura swallowed.
"Thomas.""
The detective immediately called for backup.
"How do you know?""
"Because he contacted me this morning. He knows the second will is here.""
I felt cold.
"How did you find this house?""
"Richard told me about it before he died. He asked me to keep a copy of certain medical records safe.""
"Why didn't you come forward?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because I was afraid. Thomas had people watching me. After Richard died, I received photographs of my parents' house. My younger brother was followed to school.""
Daniel's voice hardened.
"You could have saved my father.""
Laura lowered her head.
"I know.""
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then she placed the leather folder on the table.
Inside were hospital records, prescription forms, and a handwritten statement signed by Dr. Samuel Bennett.
I examined the first page.
It showed that Richard's medication had been altered.
The second page revealed something worse.
A second prescription had been issued under my name.
It was dated two days before Richard died.
I looked at Laura.
"Was this the medication intended for me?""
She nodded.
"Yes. Richard discovered that someone had substituted a dangerous compound for your prescribed medication. He brought the evidence to Dr. Bennett.""
"And Richard took it instead?""
"Not exactly.""
I stared at her.
"What do you mean?""
Laura took a breath.
"Richard never knowingly swallowed the poison. He suspected the medication had been tampered with. He asked Dr. Bennett to test it.""
Daniel frowned.
"Then how did he die?""
Laura's face tightened.
"Because someone gave him a second dose after the first bottle was secured.""
I remembered Margaret's notebook.
Delivered second dose as instructed by T.W.
"Thomas," I whispered.
Laura nodded.
"He brought another bottle to the hospital. Dr. Bennett tried to stop him, but Thomas had already convinced the nursing staff that he was authorized to manage Richard's medication.""
Harris examined the records.
"Do you have evidence Thomas ordered the second dose?""
Laura pointed to the final page.
"A recording.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Of what?""
"Thomas speaking to Dr. Bennett the night your father died.""
She reached into her folder and removed a small digital recorder.
Before she could press play, a car engine roared outside.
Harris turned toward the window.
A black SUV had stopped at the gate.
The driver's door opened.
Thomas stepped out.
He looked directly at the house.
May you like
Then he raised one hand.
And smiled.
