Chapter 6: The Evidence She Tried To Hide

Ethan stared at the papers in his hands.

For several seconds, he didn’t move.

He didn’t speak.

He didn’t even blink.

And that scared me more than anger would have.

Because Ethan was never silent when he was angry.

He asked questions.

He searched for answers.

He tried to fix things.

But now…

He looked like someone who had just discovered the ground beneath him wasn’t as solid as he thought.

“Ethan?””

My voice was weak.

He looked at me.

But his expression was different.

Not cold.

Not distant.

Just shocked.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked away.

“I think you should read it.””

Ethan looked down again.

The papers shook slightly in his hand.

“What is it?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Records.””

“Of what?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then said:

“Of Claire’s behavior before and after that night.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Claire wasn’t just involved with me.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“She was obsessed with Ethan.””

The room became completely silent.

Ethan looked up.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Before you met Emma, Claire talked about you constantly.””

I felt a strange pressure in my chest.

“No.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

I looked at Ethan.

He looked just as confused as I was.

“Claire knew who I was?””

Daniel nodded.

“She knew about you before that night.””

Ethan’s face changed.

“How?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Because I introduced you.””

The words hit like a wave.

“What?””

Daniel sighed.

“Five years ago, before everything happened, Claire came to one of my business events.””

Ethan stared at him.

“I don’t remember.””

“You weren’t paying attention.””

Daniel looked down.

“You were focused on work. Your marriage was falling apart. You were trying to help my wife after everything happened.””

The mention of his marriage made Ethan’s expression harden.

Daniel continued.

“Claire saw you.””

My fingers tightened around the blanket.

“And?””

“She asked about you.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What did she ask?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She asked if you were single.””

Ethan shook his head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

“Claire knew I was married.””

“Yes.””

The room went quiet.

Because suddenly everything was rearranging itself.

The hotel.

The messages.

The jealousy.

The anger.

The way Claire looked at Ethan.

I had always thought Claire hated me because I had a life she wanted.

But maybe it was deeper.

Maybe she believed my life belonged to her.

Ethan looked at the papers again.

“What exactly did you give me?””

Daniel answered carefully.

“Screenshots.””

“Of?””

“Messages between Claire and me.””

My heart dropped.

“Messages from when?””

“Before the hotel.””

I looked at Ethan.

He slowly turned the first page.

Then another.

His face became more serious with every line.

I wanted to know what he was reading.

But a part of me was afraid.

Because sometimes the truth hurt more when you saw it yourself.

Finally, Ethan spoke.

“She said…”

His voice stopped.

I waited.

“She said she knew I would choose her eventually.””

I felt sick.

Daniel nodded.

“She believed that.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Why?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because I made a mistake.””

Everyone looked at him.

He continued.

“I told Claire things I shouldn’t have.””

“What things?””

“That my marriage was ending.””

My eyes widened.

“And she thought…”

“Yes.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“She thought I was leaving my wife for her.””

The room felt heavy.

“But you weren’t?””

“No.””

His answer came immediately.

“I was confused. I was selfish. I made bad choices.””

He looked at me.

“But Claire misunderstood everything.””

I looked away.

Because even though Daniel was admitting his mistakes…

That didn’t erase what Claire had done.

She had made choices too.

She had pushed.

She had lied.

She had planned.

Ethan placed the papers down.

“So Claire blamed Emma.””

Daniel nodded.

“She believed Emma ruined everything.””

My heart hurt.

“Because I told her to stop.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Yes.””

The memory came back.

Five years ago.

The morning after the hotel.

Claire had come to my apartment.

She was furious.

Not sad.

Not embarrassed.

Furious.

“You made me look terrible.””

I had stared at her.

“I saved you.””

“No.””

Her voice had been cold.

“You ruined everything.””

At the time, I thought she was talking about Daniel.

I didn’t understand.

She was talking about Ethan.

Present day.

Ethan looked at me.

“You never told me this part.””

I lowered my eyes.

“I know.””

“Why?””

I took a deep breath.

“Because I thought it would destroy everything.””

He looked hurt.

“Emma.””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“That you would think I was responsible.””

His expression softened slightly.

“But you weren’t.””

“I know.””

My voice cracked.

“But Claire didn’t.””

Daniel looked down.

“She never forgave you.””

I laughed quietly.

“Apparently not.””

The pain in my chest wasn’t because Claire hated me.

I had known that for years.

The pain came from realizing how much of my life had been shaped by someone else’s resentment.

After Daniel left, Ethan stayed silent for a long time.

I could feel the questions inside him.

Finally, he spoke.

“Did she ever say anything to you?””

I looked at him.

“About me?””

He nodded.

I hesitated.

Then answered.

“Yes.””

“What?””

I closed my eyes.

“After I told her I wouldn’t help her hide anything anymore…”

I remembered Claire standing in my apartment.

Her face full of anger.

“She told me I always took things from her.””

Ethan frowned.

“What things?””

“Everything.””

I looked at him.

“She said I took the attention. The opportunities. The people who cared about me.””

His face tightened.

“She thought you took me.””

I didn’t answer.

Because yes.

That was exactly what Claire believed.

Ethan ran a hand through his hair.

“This is insane.””

I looked at him.

“Is it?””

He looked at me.

“What do you mean?””

“I spent five years telling myself she was just jealous.””

I swallowed.

“But maybe she really believed her own story.””

Ethan was quiet.

Then he said:

“That doesn’t excuse anything.””

“I know.””

“No.””

He looked directly at me.

“I need you to hear me.””

His voice was firm.

“What happened to her does not justify what she did to you.””

My eyes filled with tears.

Because those words were something I had needed to hear for years.

Not just from him.

From myself.

That evening, the hospital room was quiet.

The doctor had said my condition was improving.

The baby was still stable.

But I was exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

I looked at my phone.

There were dozens of messages.

Most from family.

Some from people I barely knew.

Then I saw one message that made me sit up.

From my aunt.

*Emma, please call me. There is something you need to know about Claire.*

I stared at the screen.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another piece of the puzzle.

I called.

She answered immediately.

“Emma?””

“Yes.””

Her voice was nervous.

“I wasn’t sure if I should tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“Claire has been telling people that you betrayed her.””

My eyes closed.

“I know.””

“No.””

Her voice lowered.

“You don’t understand.””

I sat up straighter.

“What do you mean?””

“She has been telling people you stole Ethan from her.””

My stomach twisted.

“I know that too.””

“No.””

My aunt sounded frightened.

“She has been telling people something else.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What?””

“She said you knew Ethan before she did.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She said you pretended not to know him.””

I looked toward Ethan.

He was sitting nearby, reading something on his phone.

My voice became quiet.

“Why would she say that?””

My aunt hesitated.

“Because she wants people to believe you planned everything.””

I felt sick.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“But she’s telling people.””

I closed my eyes.

The same story.

Over and over.

A story where I was the villain.

A story where Claire was the victim.

A story she had built carefully.

Then my aunt said the words that made my blood run cold.

“Emma…”

“Yes?””

“There’s more.””

“What?””

“She has been collecting information about you for months.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What kind of information?””

“Your old messages. Photos. Anything she could use.””

My breathing became shallow.

“Why?””

My aunt was silent.

Then she whispered:

“Because she told me she was going to expose you at the family gathering.””

My heart pounded.

The family gathering.

The day she attacked me.

The day she recorded her fake story.

It wasn’t random.

It wasn’t spontaneous.

She had planned it.

“She wanted everyone there,” my aunt continued.

“She wanted witnesses.””

I looked at Ethan.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The timing.

The crowd.

Noah’s phone.

The accusation.

Claire hadn’t lost control.

She had created a scene.

And she expected everyone to believe her.

But there was one thing she didn’t expect.

Noah’s recording.

The next morning, Ethan received a call.

I knew something was wrong the moment he answered.

His face changed.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“Where did you get that information?””

I watched him carefully.

He listened for another few seconds.

Then his expression hardened.

“I’ll be there.””

He ended the call.

“What happened?””

He looked at me.

“It was your father.””

My heart sank.

“What about him?””

“He wants us to come home.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then said:

“Claire told him she has proof.””

My stomach dropped.

“Proof of what?””

He looked at me.

“Proof that you lied to me.””

The room went silent.

Because I knew exactly what was happening.

Claire had realized her first plan failed.

She couldn’t use the family gathering.

She couldn’t use the video.

So now she was moving to the next step.

She was going after my marriage.

Ethan took my hand.

“We don’t have to go.””

I looked at him.

“Yes, we do.””

“Emma.””

I squeezed his hand.

“If Claire wants to tell her version of the story…”

I took a deep breath.

“Then I’m done hiding mine.””

For five years, I protected my sister’s secret.

For five years, I stayed silent.

For five years, I let her believe silence meant weakness.

But she was wrong.

Because the truth had a way of surviving.

May you like

And now…

It was finally my turn to speak.
