Chapter 3: The Truth I Buried Five Years Ago
I stared at the message until the words stopped looking like words.
*If Emma gets everything she wants, I’ll make sure Ethan finally knows who she really is.*
The sentence sat there on Noah’s phone like a threat.
Not an accident.
Not a moment of anger.
A threat.
My fingers went numb.
“Emma?””
Noah’s voice sounded far away.
I couldn’t answer.
Because my mind had already traveled backward.
Five years.
A different life.
A different version of myself.
Before Ethan.
Before the house.
Before the baby.
Before I learned how fragile happiness could be.
“Emma, what happened?””
I finally looked at Noah.
“You shouldn’t have seen this.””
He frowned.
“But I did.””
I swallowed.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” he said quietly.
“I don’t.””
He sat down in the chair beside my bed.
“But I know what I saw yesterday.””
His eyes were serious.
“I know Claire hurt you.””
I looked away.
“And I know she’s been angry at you for a long time.””
I didn’t respond.
Because he was right.
The signs had always been there.
I just refused to see them.
Noah looked at the phone again.
“Who is Ethan?””
I froze.
“What?””
“The person Claire was messaging.””
My heart dropped.
“You know who Ethan is.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I mean, why would she be texting him privately?””
I looked toward the window.
Outside, the hospital parking lot was filled with people walking in and out.
Families.
Patients.
Visitors.
People living ordinary days.
Meanwhile, my entire world was falling apart quietly inside one hospital room.
“Emma?””
I closed my eyes.
“Because she wanted him to doubt me.””
“Why?””
That was the question.
The one I had avoided answering for years.
Why?
Why did Claire hate me?
Why did she look at my happiness like it was something stolen from her?
Why did she wait until I was six months pregnant to finally explode?
The answer wasn’t simple.
It never was.
“Because of what happened five years ago.””
Noah waited.
I could tell he wanted to ask more.
But he didn’t.
Maybe he saw my face.
Maybe he understood that some wounds weren’t ready to be opened.
The door suddenly opened.
Ethan walked inside.
I quickly locked Noah’s phone.
Too quickly.
And Ethan noticed.
Of course he did.
He always noticed everything about me.
“What’s going on?””
His eyes moved between me and Noah.
Neither of us spoke.
Ethan looked at Noah.
“Did something happen?””
“No,” I said immediately.
The answer came too fast.
Too defensive.
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Emma.””
I hated that tone.
The gentle one.
The one that meant he knew I was hiding something.
“I’m okay.””
He walked closer.
“You’re not.””
I looked down.
Because he was right.
I wasn’t okay.
But I wasn’t ready to tell him why.
Not yet.
Not until I understood what Claire was trying to do.
Noah stood up.
“I should go.””
I looked at him.
“Thank you.””
He nodded.
Then he looked at Ethan.
“Take care of her.””
Ethan frowned slightly.
“I will.””
After Noah left, the room became silent.
Too silent.
Ethan sat beside me.
“Emma.””
I stared at my hands.
“Claire messaged you?””
His face changed.
“What?””
I looked up.
“She messaged you before.””
He hesitated.
A tiny hesitation.
But I saw it.
And it hurt.
“What did she say?””
Ethan looked away.
“Emma…”
“What did she say?””
He sighed.
“I didn’t think it mattered.””
The words hit harder than they should have.
“You didn’t think it mattered?””
“She was upset.””
“About what?””
Ethan was quiet.
“About us.””
My stomach tightened.
“Us?””
He nodded.
“She said you never told me everything.””
A cold feeling spread through my body.
“What exactly did she say?””
Ethan looked at me.
“She said there was something about your past.””
I swallowed.
“And?””
“She said I deserved to know.””
My eyes burned.
“And you believed her?””
“No.””
His answer came immediately.
“I didn’t.””
But then he added:
“But I wondered.””
That hurt more.
Not because he believed Claire.
Because for a second…
He questioned me.
My husband.
The person who knew every scar on my heart.
The person who promised me forever.
He wondered.
“Emma…”
I turned away.
“I need some time.””
His face fell.
“I’m sorry.””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know if I was angry at him.
Or angry at myself.
Because maybe Claire knew exactly what she was doing.
She knew one thing about me.
One thing I had spent years trying to hide.
And she knew Ethan would care.
That night, after Ethan fell asleep in the chair beside my bed, I opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling.
I couldn’t sleep.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Claire pushing me.
Then I saw her messages.
Then I saw the past.
Five years ago.
The year everything changed.
I was twenty-six.
I had just started working at a marketing company downtown.
I wasn’t rich.
I wasn’t successful.
I wasn’t anyone special.
I was just trying to build a life.
Claire, however, was going through a difficult period.
At least, that was what everyone told me.
“She needs support.””
“She’s under pressure.””
“She’s just lost.””
Those were the words I heard constantly.
So I supported her.
I helped her pay bills.
I listened to her problems.
I defended her when relatives complained.
I was her sister.
And I believed sisters protected each other.
Then one night changed everything.
It was the night I met Ethan.
At least…
That was the story everyone knew.
But there was another story.
One I never told.
One Claire knew.
Five years earlier…
I remembered the rain.
That was the first thing.
Heavy rain falling against the windshield.
I was driving home from work when I received a call from Claire.
“Emma?””
She sounded scared.
“What happened?””
“Can you come get me?””
I immediately worried.
“Where are you?””
She gave me an address.
A place across town.
When I arrived, I found her standing outside a restaurant.
Crying.
“What happened?””
She wiped her face.
“Nothing.””
I knew Claire.
When she said nothing, it usually meant everything.
“Tell me.””
She looked at me.
Then she said the sentence that changed my life.
“I ruined everything.””
I parked the car.
“What did you do?””
She looked away.
“I made a mistake.””
I waited.
Because Claire always needed time before telling the truth.
Finally, she whispered:
“I was with someone.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
She started crying harder.
“I wasn’t supposed to be there.””
My stomach tightened.
“Claire.””
“There was a man.””
“What man?””
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she said:
“Promise you won’t tell Mom and Dad.””
And that was my first mistake.
I promised.
Because I loved her.
Because she was my sister.
Because I thought protecting her meant protecting her from consequences.
I didn’t know I was helping her bury the truth.
Back in the hospital room, I turned my head toward Ethan.
He was still asleep.
I watched him for a long time.
Then I whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
Not because I betrayed him.
But because I had carried something alone for too long.
The truth was…
Five years ago, before Ethan and I were together, Claire had been involved with someone.
Someone she shouldn’t have been involved with.
Someone whose name I never wanted to hear again.
And that night…
I had helped her hide it.
But I never knew my choice would come back years later.
I never knew Claire would use my silence as a weapon.
The next morning, Claire showed up.
Alone.
No parents.
No excuses.
Just her.
The moment she walked into the room, Ethan stood.
His entire body changed.
Protective.
Cold.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Claire ignored him.
She looked at me.
“We need to talk.””
I stared at her.
“About what?””
Her eyes moved toward Ethan.
“About the truth.””
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“Leave.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“Because she’s going to tell you eventually.””
My heart started racing.
“Claire.””
She looked at me.
For a moment, I saw my sister again.
The little girl who used to hold my hand when we crossed the street.
The girl who cried when I left for college.
Then it disappeared.
“You really thought you could keep pretending forever?””
Ethan looked between us.
“Pretending about what?””
I closed my eyes.
Because I knew.
This was the moment.
The moment I had feared.
Claire smiled slightly.
“Ask your wife what happened the night you and I met.””
Ethan froze.
I opened my eyes.
And I saw confusion.
Pain.
Betrayal.
All the emotions I had hoped to avoid.
“Emma?””
I looked at him.
The man I loved.
The father of my child.
The person who deserved the truth.
“I can explain.””
Claire laughed quietly.
“Of course you can.””
She crossed her arms.
“That’s what Emma does best.””
“Claire, stop.””
“No.””
Her voice sharpened.
“You don’t get to be the perfect sister anymore.””
My hands tightened around the blanket.
Because she wasn’t angry anymore.
She was enjoying this.
She wanted to watch everything break.
“I know what you did, Emma.””
I looked at her.
“No, you know what I did for you.””
Her smile disappeared.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
And that told me everything.
Because Claire wasn’t angry about a secret.
She was afraid of the truth.
Ethan looked at me.
“What is she talking about?””
I took a deep breath.
And for the first time in five years…
I was ready to say the words.
“The night I met you…”
My voice shook.
“It wasn’t the first time I saw Ethan.””
Claire’s face went pale.
Because she knew what came next.
And so did I.
“The first time I saw your husband…”
May you like
I looked at Claire.
“…was the night I found out my sister had been lying to everyone.””
