Chapter 12: The Mother Who Lost Her Daughter
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
The voice on the phone was trembling.
Not angry.
Not threatening.
Broken.
And somehow that made it worse.
Because anger was easier to understand.
Anger had a reason.
Pain was different.
Pain carried years.
“Who are you?””
My voice barely came out.
The woman on the other end took a shaky breath.
“My name is Laura.””
I looked at Claire.
She had gone completely still.
Her face was pale.
“You’re alive,” Claire whispered.
The moment those words left her mouth, everyone froze.
I stared at my sister.
Because Claire knew her.
She knew this woman.
Not just from stories.
Not from documents.
She knew her voice.
“Claire?””
The woman started crying.
“Yes.””
A pause.
“I’m your mother.””
Claire covered her mouth.
For the first time since I had known her…
She looked like a child.
Not a woman.
Not someone who planned revenge.
Not someone who hurt people.
Just a daughter hearing her mother’s voice.
I watched her.
And despite everything…
My heart hurt.
Because I knew that feeling.
Wanting answers from the people who were supposed to love you.
Wanting to know why.
Wanting someone to finally explain.
“Where are you?””
Claire whispered.
The woman hesitated.
“I’ve been watching from a distance.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Laura answered.
“It means I knew where you were.””
Claire stepped closer to the phone.
“You knew?””
Her voice cracked.
“You knew I was alive?””
“I tried to contact you.””
“When?””
“Many times.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice became louder.
“No, you didn’t.””
“I did.””
“Then why didn’t I get anything?””
Silence.
A terrible silence.
Then Laura said:
“Because your adoptive parents stopped every message.””
I looked at Ethan.
His expression changed.
Claire’s eyes filled.
“What?””
Laura continued softly.
“They didn’t want you to know who I was.””
My heart started racing.
“Why?””
The question came from me.
Everyone looked at me.
Because that was the question nobody had answered.
Why hide Claire?
Why erase her past?
Why make her believe she had been abandoned?
Laura’s voice shook.
“Because they were afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
A long pause.
“Of what I knew.””
We moved inside.
Nobody wanted to stand outside anymore.
Not with the truth waiting.
Claire sat on the couch.
She looked exhausted.
I had never seen her like that.
Not even after the attack.
Because anger had always been her armor.
Now the armor was gone.
Only pain remained.
Ethan sat beside me.
My parents arrived twenty minutes later.
The moment my mother saw the phone, she knew.
Her face changed.
“Laura.””
The name came out like a confession.
My father stopped behind her.
Neither of them looked surprised.
And that hurt.
Because they knew.
They knew exactly what was happening.
“You knew she was alive.””
My voice was quiet.
My mother looked at me.
“Emma…”
“You knew.””
She started crying.
“I wanted to protect you.””
The words made something inside me snap.
“Protect me from what?””
Nobody answered.
I stood.
“You all keep saying that.””
My voice shook.
“Protect me.””
“Protect Claire.””
“Protect the family.””
“But nobody protected the truth.””
My father looked down.
And that silence was enough.
Laura spoke again through the phone.
“I never wanted this to happen.””
Claire laughed bitterly.
“Of course you didn’t.””
The words were painful.
But understandable.
Laura cried.
“I was young.””
Claire looked away.
“I don’t care.””
The room became silent.
Because that was the first time I had heard Claire say something that sounded like a child.
Not revenge.
Not jealousy.
Just hurt.
“You left me.””
Laura closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“You don’t.””
Her voice broke.
“You don’t know what it feels like to grow up thinking nobody wanted you.””
My eyes filled.
Because I knew Claire believed that.
Even if the truth was more complicated.
Laura whispered:
“I never abandoned you.””
Claire laughed.
“That’s easy to say now.””
“No.””
Laura’s voice became stronger.
“I lost you.””
The room froze.
“What?””
Laura continued.
“I didn’t give you away.””
Claire looked confused.
“Then why?””
Laura took a breath.
“Because someone took you from me.””
Nobody moved.
My father looked terrified.
My mother covered her mouth.
Claire stared at the phone.
“What are you saying?””
Laura answered:
“I was told my daughter died.””
The words were impossible.
“What?””
Claire whispered.
“I was told you didn’t survive.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who told you?””
Laura was silent.
Then:
“Your parents.””
Everyone looked at my mother and father.
My father immediately shook his head.
“That’s not what happened.””
Laura’s voice became emotional.
“You took my baby.””
My mother started crying.
“Laura, please.””
“No.””
Laura interrupted.
“You don’t get to ask me for forgiveness after all these years.””
I looked at my parents.
My whole life.
My entire understanding of my family.
Was changing.
Again.
My father finally spoke.
“There is more to the story.””
I looked at him.
“Then tell it.””
He closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked older than I had ever seen him.
“We made mistakes.””
Claire laughed softly.
“Convenient.””
He ignored the comment.
“Laura was struggling when she had Claire.””
Laura immediately responded:
“I was struggling.””
A pause.
“But I loved my daughter.””
My father nodded.
“I know.””
That surprised everyone.
“You know?””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
My mother started crying harder.
“Then why?””
My father didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Because we thought we could give her a better life.””
Claire stood.
“You stole my life.””
“Claire…”
“No.””
She looked at him.
“You made me believe my own mother didn’t want me.””
My father looked devastated.
“I was wrong.””
“That doesn’t fix it.””
“No.””
He nodded.
“It doesn’t.””
For once…
Nobody defended themselves.
Nobody blamed anyone else.
They just admitted the damage.
And somehow, that hurt more.
I looked at my mother.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She wiped her tears.
“Because we were afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked at Claire.
“Of losing her.””
I frowned.
“You already had her.””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“We were afraid that if she knew the truth…”
She looked down.
“…she would leave.””
The words were painful.
Because suddenly I understood something.
Claire wasn’t just angry because she felt unwanted.
She had spent her whole life afraid she would be unwanted again.
But fear didn’t excuse cruelty.
It only explained where it came from.
Then Ethan spoke.
“There’s still one thing I don’t understand.””
Everyone looked at him.
“Why now?””
Silence.
“Why did all of this come out now?””
That was the question.
The timing.
The attack.
The notebook.
Olivia.
Laura.
Everything happening at once.
Claire looked down.
“I know why.””
My heart tightened.
“Why?””
She answered quietly:
“Because I was going to expose everything.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Claire swallowed.
“I was going to tell everyone.””
“About the adoption?””
She nodded.
“And about Emma.””
My body went cold.
“What about me?””
Claire looked ashamed.
“I wanted people to believe you were part of it.””
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“Part of what?””
Claire looked at me.
“I thought if everyone knew the truth…”
She paused.
“I could finally prove you weren’t perfect.””
I felt a deep sadness.
Not anger.
Sadness.
Because Claire had spent years fighting an enemy that didn’t exist.
I was never competing with her.
But she had spent her entire life competing with me.
Then Laura said something that changed everything.
“Claire.””
Her voice softened.
“There’s something you don’t know.””
Claire looked at the phone.
“What?””
Laura hesitated.
“The reason I was looking for you all these years.””
Everyone became still.
“Why?””
Laura answered:
“Because I found out the truth.””
Claire frowned.
“What truth?””
Laura’s voice dropped.
“Your adoption was never legal.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
My father looked away.
My mother started crying.
Claire looked between them.
“No.””
Laura continued:
“There were documents changed.””
My heart raced.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone wanted Claire hidden.””
I looked at my parents.
“Who?””
Laura was silent.
Then she said:
“The person who arranged everything.””
A chill moved through me.
“Who?””
Laura whispered a name.
A name nobody expected.
A name that made my father sit down.
Because he knew it.
And when I saw his reaction…
I knew this story was even bigger than Claire.
“Who?””
I asked again.
Laura answered:
“Your grandfather.””
My breath stopped.
“My grandfather?””
“Yes.””
“Why would he do that?””
Nobody answered.
Until my father finally whispered:
“Because he knew something about Claire’s birth.””
I stared.
“What?””
My father looked at me.
“He knew who Claire’s biological father was.””
The room went completely silent.
Claire looked terrified.
“Who?””
My father’s face became pale.
Then he said:
“Someone from our family.””
I felt the world tilt.
“No.””
My father nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
My sister.
My family.
My past.
Everything was connected.
And the secret Claire had been trying to reveal…
Was not just about adoption.
Not just about lies.
May you like
It was about blood.
And someone had spent years making sure nobody found out.
