Chapter 10: The Woman Who Came Back With The Truth

I stared at the picture for what felt like an hour.

A woman standing outside a bus station.

A woman I had not seen in five years.

A woman I thought was gone.

Olivia.

The name echoed in my mind.

Not because she had been my friend.

She hadn’t.

Not really.

But because she had been a warning.

A warning I ignored.

A warning everyone ignored.

Five years ago, Claire had convinced all of us that Olivia was dangerous.

That she was unstable.

That she was someone who wanted revenge because she couldn’t accept consequences.

And now…

A stranger was telling me Olivia was alive.

And she had proof.

Proof of what?

I looked at Ethan.

“Do you think she’s telling the truth?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That worried me.

Because Ethan was usually quick.

But now he looked cautious.

“I think we need to find Olivia.””

I nodded.

“Before Claire does.””

The moment I said it, I realized something.

Maybe Claire wasn’t running away.

Maybe she was running toward something.

We spent the night trying to find Olivia.

Not through Claire.

Not through my family.

Through old records.

Old connections.

People who remembered the company where Claire and Olivia used to work.

It took hours.

But eventually, Ethan found an address.

A small town three hours away.

“She’s there.””

I stared at the screen.

“Are you sure?””

He nodded.

“The information matches.””

My hand moved protectively over my stomach.

Three hours.

The doctor had told me to rest.

To avoid stress.

To stay calm.

And here I was.

Preparing to chase a woman from my sister’s past.

Ethan noticed my expression.

“We don’t have to go tonight.””

I looked at him.

“Yes, we do.””

“Emma.””

“If Claire has been controlling the story for five years…”

I looked at the message.

“…then Olivia might be the only person who can finally tell the truth.””

He didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

This wasn’t just about Claire anymore.

It was about understanding what happened.

And maybe…

Understanding why my sister became someone capable of hurting everyone around her.

The next morning, Ethan drove.

I watched the scenery change through the window.

The city slowly disappeared.

Buildings became fields.

Traffic became empty roads.

Everything became quieter.

But my mind became louder.

I remembered Olivia.

Not much.

Just pieces.

She was quiet.

Smart.

The type of person who noticed everything.

Which was probably why Claire hated her.

People like Claire didn’t fear those who fought back.

They feared those who saw through them.

“She knew,” I whispered.

Ethan looked at me.

“Who?””

“Olivia.””

I looked out the window.

“She knew something about Claire.””

“Maybe.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“She knew.””

“How?””

“Because Claire was afraid of her.””

Ethan was silent.

“You noticed that?””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

“Claire wasn’t scared of anyone.””

Except Olivia.

I remembered.

The way Claire changed whenever Olivia’s name came up.

The way her confidence disappeared.

The way she always said:

“Don’t trust her.””

At the time, I thought Claire was warning me.

Now I wondered if she was warning herself.

The address led us to a small bookstore.

Nothing about it looked threatening.

A simple wooden sign.

A few plants outside.

A quiet street.

I almost laughed.

After everything.

After secrets and lies and betrayal…

The truth was waiting in a bookstore.

Ethan parked.

“Ready?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He smiled slightly.

“Me neither.””

We walked inside.

A bell rang above the door.

A woman behind the counter looked up.

She froze.

I froze.

Because I recognized her immediately.

Older.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face had changed.

But her eyes were the same.

Olivia.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then she whispered:

“Emma?””

My throat tightened.

“Yes.””

Her expression changed.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Sadness.

“I knew this day would come.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She looked toward the door.

Then locked it.

That small action made my heart race.

“Why are you locking the door?””

She looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

“Because if Claire knows you found me…”

She stopped.

“What?””

Olivia took a deep breath.

“She’ll come here.””

We sat in the back of the bookstore.

Olivia made tea.

The normalness of the moment felt strange.

Like we were discussing something ordinary.

Not a secret that had destroyed multiple lives.

Finally, Olivia spoke.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For what happened to you.””

I frowned.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“I saw the news.””

My chest tightened.

“What news?””

“The family gathering.””

My eyes widened.

“The video?””

“Yes.””

Olivia looked down.

“I knew Claire would eventually do something like that.””

Ethan leaned forward.

“What does that mean?””

Olivia was quiet.

Then she said:

“It means Claire has always needed control.””

I swallowed.

“Tell us everything.””

Olivia looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“Okay.””

Then she began.

Five years ago, Olivia worked with Claire.

At first, they were friends.

Or at least, Olivia thought they were.

“Claire was charming,” Olivia said.

“People liked her.””

I almost smiled sadly.

Yes.

That was Claire.

She could make anyone believe they were special.

“But after a while, I noticed things.””

“What things?””

Olivia looked at me.

“She didn’t just want success.””

“What did she want?””

“To be chosen.””

The answer was simple.

But it explained everything.

“She hated feeling invisible.””

Olivia continued.

“Whenever someone else got attention, Claire saw it as a personal attack.””

I looked down.

Because I knew.

I had spent my entire life trying to prove I wasn’t competing with her.

But Claire had always believed we were.

“She became obsessed with people who had things she wanted.””

Olivia looked at Ethan.

“People like you.””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“Go on.””

Olivia nodded.

“Claire found out about Daniel’s problems. She thought she could use them.””

“Use them how?””

“She thought Daniel could connect her to a better life.””

My stomach tightened.

“But then she saw Ethan.””

Olivia nodded.

“She changed.””

“How?””

“She stopped talking about Daniel.””

A pause.

“She started talking about Ethan.””

The room became silent.

“She said Emma was lucky.””

My heart hurt.

Olivia continued.

“She said Emma didn’t deserve the things she had.””

Ethan looked angry.

“But why?””

Olivia looked at him.

“Because Claire believed Emma didn’t have to work for love.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She thought people naturally chose you.””

I didn’t understand.

Olivia explained:

“Claire believed you were loved because you were good.””

My eyes filled.

“And she hated that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Olivia looked at me.

“Because she thought she had to become someone else to be loved.””

The words hurt.

Because they sounded almost like an explanation.

Not an excuse.

But an explanation.

Then Olivia’s expression changed.

“There’s something else.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“The reason Claire wanted me gone.””

My heart raced.

“What did you know?””

Olivia looked down.

“I found financial records.””

“Financial records?””

“Yes.””

“About Claire?””

She nodded.

“She was taking money.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“From where?””

“The company.””

Ethan immediately became serious.

“How much?””

“Enough to get noticed.””

I stared.

“And you found out?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Olivia laughed sadly.

“I thought she would apologize.””

She shook her head.

“She didn’t.””

“What did she do?””

“She blamed me.””

My stomach dropped.

“Of course she did.””

Olivia looked at me.

“She told everyone I was stealing.””

I froze.

The pattern.

Again.

Someone else became the villain.

Someone else carried the blame.

“She created fake evidence.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Olivia nodded.

“She made it look like I had manipulated records.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Did anyone believe her?””

Olivia smiled bitterly.

“Everyone.””

The answer hurt.

Because I understood.

Claire didn’t need proof.

She needed a story.

And she was good at creating one.

“She ruined my reputation.””

Olivia’s voice became quieter.

“I lost my job.””

“I’m sorry.””

She looked at me.

“Are you?””

The question surprised me.

I deserved it.

Because five years ago, I had believed Claire.

I had watched Olivia disappear.

And I never questioned it.

“I am.””

Olivia studied me.

Then nodded.

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you come back?””

I asked.

Olivia looked at her hands.

“Because Claire threatened me.””

My heart stopped.

“What did she threaten you with?””

“She said if I told anyone…”

Olivia paused.

“She would tell people I was obsessed with Daniel.””

My stomach twisted.

Again.

The same names.

The same lies.

“She knew people would believe her.””

Olivia looked at me.

“And she was right.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because that was the hardest part.

Claire wasn’t powerful because she was always telling the truth.

She was powerful because she understood what people wanted to believe.

Before we left, Olivia stopped us.

“There’s one more thing.””

I turned.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“Claire didn’t just keep information about me.””

“What do you mean?””

“She kept information about you.””

I felt cold.

“What kind of information?””

Olivia walked to a drawer.

She pulled out an envelope.

“I found this before I left.””

She handed it to me.

My name was written on it.

Emma.

My hands shook.

“What is this?””

Olivia looked serious.

“The reason Claire believed she could destroy your marriage.””

I opened it.

Inside was a document.

One page.

One name.

And one sentence.

I read it once.

Then again.

Because my brain refused to understand.

*Biological relationship confirmation.*

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Emma?””

I looked at Olivia.

“What is this?””

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“I think Claire was planning to tell you.””

My fingers trembled.

“Tell me what?””

Olivia whispered:

“That the reason she hated you…”

She paused.

“…was because she discovered something about your family.””

I looked down at the paper.

At the name.

At the result.

At the truth waiting to destroy everything.

And for the first time since this nightmare began…

May you like

I wasn’t afraid of Claire.

I was afraid of what she knew.
