Chapter 9: The Truth About My Child

I did not sleep that night.

Chloe’s message remained on my phone.

“It’s about your baby.””

Four words.

Four words that terrified me.

Because there was nothing in the world more important than my child.

I wanted to believe it was another manipulation.

Another game.

But a mother’s instinct was different.

Something felt wrong.

The next morning, I agreed to meet her.

My father disagreed.

“Absolutely not.””

I looked at him.

“She mentioned the baby.””

His expression softened.

“I understand why you want answers.””

“I need to know.””

He was silent.

Then he nodded.

“But you are not going alone.””

I did not argue.

Not anymore.

I had learned my lesson.

Chloe arrived twenty minutes late.

She looked different.

Not powerful.

Not confident.

Just tired.

She sat across from me.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Finally, she said:

“I hate you.””

I almost laughed.

“That is an interesting way to start a conversation.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

“Then why did you ask to meet?””

Her fingers tightened.

“Because I made mistakes.””

I waited.

“And because Daniel made bigger ones.””

I studied her.

“Tell me about my baby.””

She took a deep breath.

“Before your wedding, Daniel found out something.””

“What?””

“He found out there was a possibility your father would transfer control of a major company division to you after you had children.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Chloe nodded.

“He knew your father believed family responsibility mattered.””

My stomach turned.

“So?””

“So Daniel knew having a child with you would strengthen his position.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

I looked away.

“No.””

Because that was something I could not accept.

Not again.

Not another person turning my child into a transaction.

Chloe continued.

“But that’s not the worst part.””

My eyes returned to her.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“Daniel tried to convince me to help him.””

My blood ran cold.

“Help him do what?””

She whispered:

“Convince you to sign documents.””

“What documents?””

“Financial documents.””

I felt sick.

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

The timeline.

The arguments.

The sudden pressure Daniel had put on me to combine accounts.

It all made sense.

He was not trying to build a future.

He was trying to secure access.

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I could not breathe.

When I returned home, my father already knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I told him everything.

His expression became unreadable.

Then he said something that shocked me.

“I suspected.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

He corrected.

“Your husband changed after learning about the pregnancy.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I needed proof.””

I looked away.

“I wish someone had protected me.””

My father’s expression softened.

“I know.””

The sadness in his voice hurt more than anger.

Because he was my father.

And he had spent years watching me choose people who did not deserve me.

That evening, my lawyer arrived.

There was a new development.

“Mrs. Carter.””

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

He placed a file on the table.

“We found something regarding Daniel’s financial activity.””

I opened it.

A transfer.

A large one.

From Daniel’s account.

To someone unexpected.

“Who is this?””

The lawyer looked serious.

“Someone connected to the Whitmores.””

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then answered.

“Your doctor.””

The room went silent.

My hand moved protectively over my stomach.

“What?””

The lawyer continued quickly.

“We do not know the purpose yet.””

My heart started racing.

“But the payments began shortly after your pregnancy was confirmed.””

I looked at my father.

And for the first time in weeks…

I felt genuine fear.

Because this was no longer about money.

No longer about pride.

No longer about a broken marriage.

This was about my child.

My father stood.

His expression was colder than I had ever seen.

“Find everything.””

The lawyer nodded.

“And Emma?””

I looked up.

“Yes?””

He lowered his voice.

“Be prepared.””

“For what?””

He looked at the documents.

“Because whatever they were planning…”

A pause.

“It was never just about your inheritance.””

I stared at the papers.

May you like

And realized the nightmare I thought I had escaped…

Was only beginning.
