Chapter 10: The Shadow Behind the Perfect Family

Fear was a strange thing.

It did not always arrive screaming.

Sometimes it arrived quietly.

A single document.

A single name.

A single unanswered question.

And suddenly, the entire world you knew became something you could no longer trust.

For the first time since leaving the Whitmore estate, I was afraid.

Not for myself.

For my baby.

I could handle betrayal.

I could handle humiliation.

I could handle losing a marriage I once believed would last forever.

But the thought that someone had looked at my unborn child as part of a plan…

That was something I could not forgive.

My father noticed the change in me immediately.

He had always been able to read my emotions before I spoke.

“You’re blaming yourself.””

I sat silently in his office.

The city lights reflected against the glass walls.

“I should have known.””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“I should have seen it.””

“No.””

This time, I looked at him.

“Dad—”

He shook his head.

“Emma, listen to me.””

His voice softened.

“You are doing what mothers do.””

“What?””

“You are looking backward and searching for the moment you could have prevented something.””

I looked down.

“But I trusted him.””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“And that was not a mistake.””

I looked at him.

“After everything?””

My father nodded.

“Trusting someone is not weakness.””

His expression became colder.

“Betraying that trust is.””

Those words stayed with me.

Because for weeks, I had been carrying shame that did not belong to me.

I had been asking myself why I did not notice.

Why I did not see the signs.

Why I believed Daniel.

But the truth was simple.

I believed him because I loved him.

And he used that love against me.

The investigation moved quickly.

My father’s team was not searching randomly anymore.

They had a direction.

The doctor.

The payments.

The timeline.

Everything.

Three days later, my father called me into his office.

“We found something.””

I immediately stood.

“What?””

He placed several files on the table.

“The payments to your doctor were not direct.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“They went through a third-party company.””

“Whose company?””

He looked at me.

“Daniel’s.””

My stomach dropped.

“He created a company?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My father opened the file.

“Officially? Consulting.””

“And unofficially?””

“Information.””

The word made me uncomfortable.

“What kind of information?””

My father hesitated.

“Medical information.””

The room became silent.

I felt my hands become cold.

“No.””

“Emma—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“My doctor would never do that.””

My father did not argue.

“That is why we investigated before accusing anyone.””

I looked at the papers.

There were dates.

Payments.

Messages.

Meetings.

Then I saw one name.

Dr. Hayes.

My doctor.

The woman who had been with me through my pregnancy.

The woman who had smiled at every ultrasound.

The woman who had held my hand when I cried after a difficult appointment.

I wanted to believe there was another explanation.

But the evidence was there.

That afternoon, I requested my complete medical records.

The clinic responded quickly.

Too quickly.

That was the first thing that bothered me.

When people have nothing to hide, they do not rush.

They simply provide answers.

My lawyer reviewed everything.

Then he found it.

A small inconsistency.

A note.

A change.

“What is this?”” I asked.

He pointed at the page.

“Your estimated due date.””

I looked confused.

“What about it?””

“It was changed.””

I stared.

“When?””

“Two months ago.””

“Why?””

“That is what we are trying to determine.””

My heart raced.

Two months ago.

The same time Daniel began pressuring me about finances.

The same time his family suddenly became interested in my pregnancy.

The same time everything changed.

That evening, Daniel showed up again.

This time, I almost refused to see him.

But something inside me wanted answers.

He entered the house slowly.

He looked tired.

Older.

Like the last few weeks had aged him years.

“Emma.””

I remained standing.

“Why did you pay my doctor?””

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

That was enough.

“You know?””

I stared.

“So it’s true.””

“Emma, listen.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Answer the question.””

He looked away.

“I was trying to protect us.””

The words were unbelievable.

“Protect us?””

“Yes.””

“You secretly paid my doctor.””

“I needed information.””

“About my pregnancy?””

Silence.

I felt anger rising.

“What kind of information?””

He stepped closer.

“Emma, I never wanted to hurt you.””

“That is not an answer.””

He closed his eyes.

“My family believed your pregnancy could change everything.””

I stared.

“And you agreed.””

“I was under pressure.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were an adult.””

He looked broken.

“My family threatened to destroy me.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So you helped them destroy me first.””

He had no response.

And that was when I understood something painful.

Daniel was not a monster.

That would have been easier.

He was something more complicated.

A weak person who kept choosing the wrong thing.

And weakness could hurt people just as much as cruelty.

Before leaving, Daniel turned around.

“There is something you need to know.””

I said nothing.

“The night of the gala…”

He stopped.

“What?””

His face tightened.

“The ring.””

I waited.

“It was never about the ring.””

“I know.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

My stomach tightened.

“What are you saying?””

He swallowed.

“Chloe wanted that night to happen.””

A pause.

“But Eleanor planned something worse.””

“What?””

Daniel looked terrified.

“She wanted your father to publicly disown you.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She thought if you embarrassed the Carter name enough, your father would cut you off.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because then you would have nowhere to go.””

The room felt colder.

“They wanted me helpless.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you?””

His eyes filled.

“I was supposed to convince you to leave with me afterward.””

I stared.

“You were part of the plan.””

He looked away.

“I was.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

Because this time, there was no excuse.

No misunderstanding.

May you like

No confusion.

Just the truth.
